Another really useful tip, if you have a plastic palette that's caked with dried paint that doesn't want to come off easily, pour a bit of water on top so that it fills each well and carefully put in the freezer until the water is frozen. What happens is that the water freezes and binds to the paint, so when you rinse it under warm water the dried paint comes off effortlessly. I would recommend doing this in a bucket so the paint doesn't clog your drain.

I know, right? People these days would slap on vintage filters and overlays then spends 5 minutes of the video playing overrated ‘relaxing’ music as they pour tea at a snail’s pace and dramatically munches on some crackers before going “Heeeyyy guuuuyyys, welcome to my channeeeeelll” and blathers about their life for the next 5 minutes for no reason at all before actually getting onto the video :/ Bonus points if they somehow manage to get a sponsor, and they spend another 5 minutes uselessly rephrasing unimportant details.

I'm a beginner but I got a good tip from an artist. I put a wet paper towel on a surface (like a palette) and then I put some baking paper on top, on which I put my acrylics on, so they don't harden and dry out that easily while painting. And you can put another layer of baking paper on top of the acylics if you are taking a little pause, so they don't dry out.

I use icecube trays that come w/ a lid to mix my most needed colors for a painting and a palette on the side to constantly mix other nuances or thin them up w/ water. This way I don't need to take a breaks to make my basic colors too often, they don't bleed into each other thanks to the little containers, they don't dry down in between painting sessions thanks to the lid and the quantity I can make. Great advices, thank you!

So, do you mean you put paints directly on the paper towel? Anyone?
@sofiatravassos
@sofiatravassos 4 жыл бұрын
MrBoguechitto2 The paper towels take a really long time to dry if they’re the slightest bit isolated from circulating air, so she probably covers the palette with plastic or in a box. The paints are laid out on top of the parchment paper, which is on top of the wet paper towels, so the moisture comes from both underneath and from the top (water spray)
@sofiatravassos
@sofiatravassos 4 жыл бұрын
Some people use actual towels to provide moisture for longer btw, but just keep in mind that this means there’s a chance the towel will get stained by the paint if you’re not super duper careful, so use an old towel or piece of thicker cloth

I use a fine mist sprayer for both my palette and the canvas. The fine mist helps me not go overboard. Fluid/mediums do work, but can also mess with mixing and transparency. My DIY pallete fits in a low-profile wide tupperware container and is just a sheet of acrylic panel. I can preserve paints in there for quite a long time, especially if I mist it up. I use wax paper to make cleanup easy and keep the paint from gumming up the plumbing. Paint what you see is hard to put into words, but I try to go for general shapes. I discard all the notions of seeing things as objects, and I have to trust the process to eventually make something that looks like the object in the end. It's scary. But it's really exciting when you occasionally step back, and you can see the objects coming together!

I literally just started painting, so these tips were very helpful. I started doing little things here and there. The last one I did was my rendition of “Starry Night” and it took roughly about 16 hours. Thanks again for the tips! About to check out some of your other videos. Need to learn how to blend and layer correctly.

Thank You for the tips..Drawing & Painting was my first passion since 6 yrs old.., I stopped for a few years as I wanted to learn so may crafts having worked @ a large art center where I loved watching, artist create beautiful, animals from welding different metals to sculpt wonderful pieces so I bartered my jewelry pieces for a member of their family or other friends as gifts, and I could learn a new trade in metal sculpting, I loved being fortunate to have worked with very talented people to learn the basics and in time had accomplished and created many pieces with ceramics, embroidery, sewing, design my own rug..Soon I will begin work on it and try sculpting figures for a few hours, then work on my acrylic painting I can fit it into my daily schedule.. I have seen your videos and I actually learned to keep from frustrating myself..since I changed from oils to acrylics because of the odors..You have a unique way of explaining when your showing us how to paint whatever the picture was, I mention this because your passion shows, most important that you caught my attention, and you aren't criticising anyone whatever mediums we choose to use and or methods...Trust me I know that negative approach gets nowhere , my art classes @ school from 1st grade to college there was that odd instructor that is so critical of most of us, I finally realised before semester ends they really don't want to be there, they took the position for the job..

Hello))) Thank you for sharing))) But have you ever had your painting flake off the canvas? I was using water in the beginning as well. But now I prefer to use different fluids and gels instead. There are also special sprays to keep the painting and the pallet wet, but not with water. Water is in fact a dissolvant for acrylic. The more water you are using, the less binder there will be in the acrylic. Special fluids serve as a binder in fact. With them we can be sure our painting will not flake off in a couple of years even in a very dry climate.

Katie, great tips you can teach an old dog new tricks! A tip for a palette... sometimes I use a plastic container that is made to store Deviled eggs, is has small wells and is a couple inches deep. I add water to the bottom and seal it up. I found mine at a Dollar Store. Keep up the great work!

I only use dry palettes for experimenting, to figure out techniques, etc., and also for metallic paints. Everything else I use a wet palette for, and it's upped my game quite a lot.

It’s great to keep your reference image nearby with some decent lighting on it you want to be able to depict all the colors you see. The spray bottle thing is super helpful as soon as you suspect your paint is starting to dry out you want to spray it with water and use a palette knife to re-mix the water in to revive the paint
