My friend's old boss blew an MC22 engine at 24,000 RPM on the dyno with a fuel injection conversion & a high performance programnable ecu set at 28,000RPM to find out the stress point for the MC14e engine . The engine speed was measured with a hooked up oscilliscope measuring the spark signal .

Some of these engines actually rev higher than most Formula 1 cars!

F1 only breached 20,000 RPM with BMW engine in 2002. Honda was doing it in 1990 with street legal bikes. It's also worth noting that the RC 66 250cc straight six could also reach 19,000 in race trim.

I believe Ferrari created one-off 21k RPM motor for the Schumacher's last race, during the 2006 Brasil GP.
@slicktires2011

Engines went over 21k RPM in testing with the BMW Williams. But by 2006 FIA changed to V8s which couldn't rev as high, in 2007 they were limited to 19k by regulations, then 18k.

It's worth noting that the Honda RC149 reportedly hit 21k rpm in 1966. They used the same engine in the bike for the full race season, and had very few mechanical problems. Reportedly the bike was still accelerating, but the rider had to brake for a corner. The RC149 is a 4 stroke, DOHC, inline 5 cylinder, 125cc, with 4 valves per cylinder and 5 carburettors. The bike could hit 130mph.

Playwme Surname truth. I have the '92 fzr 250, and it hauls ass. Nothing beats a early 90s supersport 250. I truly think even the modern ninja 250s don't stand a chance against them. What is your opinion? It seems like the 90s was the golden era for 250cc sport bikes. They seem so unrestricted unlike modern 250s

Yeah, new ones are rubbish. Theyre built down to a price point. CBR250RR brand new in Australia in 1998 was $10k. Ninja 250 20 years later is $6k. Best 250 I’ve found in the last 10 years is the Yamaha WR250X Supermotard. It’s single cylinder though, and was still very pricey when new for a 250.

Or even 3 cylinder engines that are 400cc or less. Trouble today is corporations aren't willing to risk anything. They want maximum money for the least risk. Talk about a formula for boring.

Yep! I own a ZXR-250..rode it till the engine blew up. Then I got myself another beauty...a 1998 ZX-6R. Had so much fun with it...till I hit a dog at 170Kmph. Destroyed the bike and my knee cap...but the stupid dog lives. 9 months later, I bought a Vulcan500...rode it like I stole it...blew the engine again..then I settled for something more "docile"....a 2006 CBR600RR..which I raced for 2 years...which I still commute in.

I actually previously owned two of the featured bikes, the GPZ400R & the FZR250RR. The GPZ was my first 'big' bike after passing my bike test 23 years ago & the FZR I owned a few years later. I fitted a free-flowing muffler to the FZR & it did indeed sound amazing when nearing the 18,500 rpm redline ;-)

I used to own a GSXR400-RR back in the day when 400cc sportsbikes were miniaturized versions of their racy 750cc originals. Nowadays 400cc bikes are just overgrown 250cc 'half-engined' parallel twins with the same 2-pot hollow sound. Sad.

I had a Honda CBR250R 1987 Hurricane, revved it to 18,000 rpm everyday for 3 years, no oil change, no filter change. Got it over 180kph a few time (over 112mph) laying flat to the tank. Bought it in Auckland New Zealand for $1300 had to barter hard down from $1500 because I was a broke teenager and the dude selling it was leaving the country luck me! My friend had a 1989 CBR250R Hurricane and another mate had a GSXR-400RR Slingshot, his brother had a VFR400R NC24 all 4 cylinders. Was like a F-1 race on the way to high school in the mornings that was my normal, we all thought this was life forever young and invincible, and they were awesome days! When I met my girlfriend 20 years ago I use to take her for rides on it and I can just imagine her parents shock hearing the screaming 18,000rpm approaching their house. Luckily these bikes still are available here!!!

Was a blast smoking, loud , chrome, metallic paint!!! So far the best I rode was a Ducati 620 monster perfect for the Italian back rodes.. I rented one for 2 weeks on vacation. I may downsize from my M900 to a 620 or 750 . Great video!!!

These bikes are created to use the top specs you can have on a First category of Bike licence you are allowed to have before 18 in Japan. They were not made to be light for racing. 400 and 35KW was the limit. But they tricked the system and made it faster by making 250cc 4 banger that gad faster High revving engine allowing for more speed than a neutered 400cc to comply with power limit. So they made max power at very high RPM and were lighter so they could achieve more speed respecting Licence limitations.

Most of the bikes on this list are larger bikes that have been handicapped. It was disappointing to see that the Honda VF400F and VF500F did not make the cut. The "mini-ceptor" was built from the ground up for the 400cc market. The VF500F took the bikes performance to the stratosphere, being bored out for the NA market. I hope you can feature it somewhere in the future. It is a fairly rare bike, so if you need help finding footage I can share some of my bike with you. 500cc V4, 86hp, 12500rpm, ~400lbs

It would be great if they had a series running 400 cc 4 cylinders. Heck where I live in Asia, they even race the little 125's with the "Step Through" frame. I'ts fairly exciting. Id love to a 4 cylinder 400, the light weight allows you to flick it thru corners, the high RPM's are thrilling, and the high power to weight ratio makes them giant killers.

I LOVE the smaller bikes! I've had a YSR-50, RD-400 Daytona, 440-LTD , VFR-250, RD-250 and a F7 175! I've owned a couple liter bikes, 750's and a 600 or two but nothing compares to the smaller bikes. Sure I might not be able to do 200mph but I sure as hell can beat any liter bike on a twisty road! Plus they have cheaper parts and are easier to work on!!

Don't forget the FZR400. Redline 14,000 and it made 25 plus ft-lbs at 9,500 and 20 at 14,000. Racetrack was 10k to 14k only and was a screaming good time. US import '89-'90 410 to 420 pounds full of gas, 4.5 gallons! CA model had EXUP, added 5 lbs. 1990 had a frame brace and deltabox swingarm, all added 5 lbs. So, the CA EXUP in '90 weighed 420 lbs. The fzr600 engine is a direct bolt in, as is the radiator and front end with bigger brakes. Maybe adds 20 pounds. The YZF600 engine, front end and radiator can be made to fit, and add 25 pounds. I've run all that in the 1989 model with the tiny 428 chain, and after 50k miles there are no problems. Tells you just how awesome the FZR400 is.

I don't know if it was meant to.... but oldies? Suzuki Rg500? Yamaha Rd500 (or RVF)? you had the sound of a race bike.... and also a minimum of speed! I can't imagine reving an engine to 20k ... forcing everyone to turn their head to see what is the monster coming.... then poorly showing up at 40mph...haha!
