Small drive is like a small trunk in a car. One needs to be mindful. When you have a big trunk, it is very often filled with junk… I like the idea of having a small drive for that matter, with an external SSD twice the size of the drive… Spring cleaning every 2 to 3 months to me on my base model MacBook Air M1. It works perfectly fine. I’ve set a reminder for the spring cleaning actually:)

Good overview. You mention email storage, but I've found with some people text messages can take up a huge amount of space, especially if the user is someone who uses iMessage to send a lot of pictures or videos.

One thing that can take up a lot of iCloud space are iPhone/iPad backups. This is exactly what happened to me as I noticed I was getting close to running out of iCloud space on my 200 GB plan. Fortunately I delete those backups and have some breathing room for the time being!

I just received a mac mini for this past Christmas. I am not a power user and just wanted something entry level as my purpose for switching from PC to Mac was to keep everything all on the same "ecosystem" I have iPhone, iPad etc....The other reason (for wanting a Mac Mini) is I soon discovered that paying for storage was going to be a premium regardless of which Mac (or even PC for that matter) I chose. So I already knew that I would be getting external storage. It is unfortunate that internal storage is so expensive....even on a PC. I did not realize that companies where all switch to solid state drives. Anyhow, I have been watching your videos to help me figure out how to set up my new mac mini system with an external hard drive and to keep large files such as photos and music off the main drive and on an external drive. I would appreciate any recommendations for which of your videos would be the best for me to watch and utilize. There is so much to learn. Thank you for the wonderful content

iPhone and iPad backups can take up a HUGE amount of space. I always transfer those files to an external drive after a backup.

Question: When you plug the external drive back in to your computer, is it organized in the same way as my mac? When I used an external drive years ago, the information was very difficult to get in to and to find lets say 5 pictures and 2 documents. I am still hoping for something more than this iPad, lol. I miss the full set up I use to have at work although it was not a Mac it felt more organized. Thanks

The files on the external drive would be organized any way you want. You create the folders and put the files where you want.

@@galato4234 Shared albums are for sharing with other users. If these are just your photos and you want to store them in iCloud, use the regular iCloud Photos library, not sharing.

Hi Gary, I will want to upgrade an older iMac 2015 model, that has a 2TB Fusion Drive in it to a newer M1 Mac with internal SSD. However, I do not want to pay the higher price for a larger internal SSD that Apple charges. Instead, I would like to buy a cheaper (but slower) external 2TB SSD. I was wondering if it is possible to move an entire User Account (or multiple user accounts) to an external SSD and leave the OS and all the Apps on the faster internal SSD. I think that the performance would still be OK, but save a lot of $$. Ideally I would do that on the old iMac first so that when I eventually upgrade to a new Mac, I the migration will be easier. Would you consider creating a video to show how to move entire user accounts to an external SSD?
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
You can't move your user account to an external drive. Instead, you'll need to decide what is in your user account and what is on the external drive. Mac SSDs are expensive since they are very fast and high quality. But understand how much more difficult it will be to have files on an external before committing to a combo internal/external system like this.

generally you should only move stuff to an external drive that you don't plan on accessing every day, as the drive can be easily disconnected. I myself have a MacBook Pro with a 1 TB internal SSD and find that to be adequate. However when I'm doing video editing, I'll connect my external SSD and use that to do the video editing session. Yes Apple charges a small fortune for upgrades, however as Gary mentions you are paying for quality when it comes to the drive itself. No longer are we dealing with spinning rust for drives on Macs meaning you'll get far better speed and reliability. One thing to keep in mind too is you'll get all that money you spent on upgrades back when you later go to resell your Mac. I know this from experience having sold my souped up 2020 Mac mini M1 (with the 16 GB storage) for about 70% of what I paid for it despite having owned it for well over a year.

It used to be easy to move the podcasts to an external drive with iTunes. Unfortunately not anymore, podcasts now only uses the internal drive. Or did anyone find a solution?
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
There's no good way. But Podcasts shouldn't take up much space. When you are doing listening, remove it. So you should only have things that want to listen to soon. Otherwise, you can download on demand.

when it comes to cloud storage, I like to use those service that mounts as a virtual network drive, again, google drive comes to mind. that drive only appears when the app is open because its streaming those files to your computer directly from the server and you have access to them in finder. I prefer to use p cloud though as unlike google drive it works on both windows, linux, and mac. and 10 GB is moer than enough for me

Why are your visual examples so small and blurred? I can’t make head or tail of them. Added to that you talk so fast

The video is high resolution 2K. They should be crystal clear. Perhaps KZfaq is giving you a low res version to adjust to your bandwidth. Try changing the settings at the bottom.

You can slow the video speed: click the 3 dots (at upper right of screen), look for “playback speed” and set it to .75.

Please slow down your speech a little or pause between sentences and thoughts. Why are you rushing?
@macmost
@macmost 6 ай бұрын
From the MacMost about page: You talk too fast in your videos. Can you slow down? The way you see me (Gary) in my videos is the way I really talk. I am enthusiastic about technology and I think it shows in the videos. I do not try to slow myself down or alter how I talk in the videos. I just try to be myself. I know I can’t please everyone all the time, so no matter how I did the videos there would be a few complaints. But I know that if I tried to tone down my enthusiasm or be someone other than who I am, then there’s no way I would have made this many episodes over many years. I do provide transcripts for each video, and there are speed controls, pause and rewind too.
