Actually the presenter got it slightly wrong. Only Malays are entirely Muslim in Malaysia. Not all Malaysians are Muslims. I am a native of Sarawakian descent from East Malaysia and I am Christian. A lot of Chinese and Indians are of different religion too. However, yes the constitution of Malaysia states that the official religion is Islam but everyone of other races are free to practice other religions as long as they are official religions. Most sects and cults are banned in Malaysia, regardless of religion. Only Muslims can't change their faith in Malaysia. Non-Muslims are free to choose the religion they wish. So your observation is more accurate than the guy in the video.

To be more clear, a person who is practicing malay traditions and is a Muslim is called malay in the constitution (ie javanese, bugis, minang, banjar etc if they practice the malay traditions and Muslim is a constitutional malay) but if these malay sub-race do not practice Islam (ie the aborigines sakai, jakun, negrito, Iban, kadazan etc) are called bumiputra (son of the earth) by the constitution... And of course Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, but not all Malaysian have to be Muslim as we practice the freedom of religion too...

Malay Deutro are considered the direct ancestors of present-day Malay people, while Malay Proto are the ancient Malay like Iban's, Kadazan and Orang Asli etc. Malay Proto are not expose to the world like Malay Deutro where Malay Deutro are more towards adventuring than Malay Proto.

The constitution doesn't say all Malaysians are Muslim, but the religion of the Federation of Malaysia is Islam but other faiths are free to be practiced. Also Malaysia only came into being after Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaya in 1963 before Singapore seceded in 1965. Malaysia is actually a combination of two words Malay+sia but I forgot the notion of sia. It was proposed by the Malaysia's first premier Tunku Abdul Rahman.

the presenter mentioned “Bahasa Malay”. That isn’t quite correct. It should be “Bahasa Melayu” , the national language of Malaysia. “Malaya” is the name of the country prior independent from the British. It is named as Malaysia once the country got independent in 1957. “Teh Tarik”, the most popular brewed tea 🫖 in Malaysia. Really tasty, but i try to minimize drinking it, too much condensed milk & sugar. The largest roundabout, wow, never thought of that. I live nearby Putrajaya, never even bother about the roundabout, instead the building architecture & the man-made lakes are amazing. Thanks for sharing the video to the world. 👌

On 31st August 1957, the Straits Settlements of Penang and Malacca, the Federated Malay States of Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan together with the Unfederated Malay States of Perlis, Kedah, Johore, Pahang, Trengganu and Kelantan obtained independence (Merdeka) from the British to form Malaya. All theses states are in Peninsular Malaysia. On 16 September 1963, the British colonies of Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak together with Malaya formed Malaysia. Singapore is at the southern tip of Malaya while Sabah and Sarawak are on the island of Borneo. In 1965, Singapore left Malaysia to become an independent nation.

But saying it is borrowed from Chinese.. Dutch and others.. Are just slightly inaccurate because malay language has been used way before 15 century itself..

I beg to differ to the above comment. Yes it has been used or developed earlier but the Malay language borrowed a lot of words from others languages as well. Besides Portuguese, we borrowed words from Sanskrit, Arab, Turkish, Chinese, Indian, Dutch and also English just to name a few.

@@joefg6422 yes.. It has been used and developed earlier.. But the original language of the malays aren't the romanic alphabets like A b c d and so on.. It was jawi.. It was similar to Arabic language but Arab has a different sign to make different sound.. While the jawi is spelt plainly by the alphabets.. And the jawi & Arabic was already and widely used since the prophets days.. But I am happy that we can agree to disagree.. We're cool bro.

Jamiul Hadidi, some of the words in Chinese and English has been borrow but possibly not the Dutch. Even the original Malay does not really exist until the English made them so. The current Malay language curriculum exist because of the English. They are the one that build the Malay language in the sense of the vocabulary and the later stages by the Babas and Chinese in Malaya then as the time passes more and more malay becomes educated they have them improved over many years.
@zaharizak
@zaharizak 3 жыл бұрын
The correct term should be "borrowed words" and not "borrowed language". Both Jamiul and joe F G are correct. The Malay language, as described by Jamiul, is not borrowed. Correct. But then the language has evolved and many words are borrowed from somewhere else like Joe described.

Just to correct mr leroy from FTD, not all Malaysian is a muslim... According to our constitution, only all malays subjected to be a muslim. In fact, there are 3 key points to be a malay : 1. Islam 2. Malay language & 3. Practice a malay culture & custom. For those non muslim aboriginal ethnicity will be called pribumi ( aborigins ) & we malay & non malay aborigins ( Iban, kadazan, murut, dusun & other ethnicities of borneo, org asli, thai @ siamese & kristang / serani @ portuguese decendents ) shared one umbrella called bumiputera ( son of the soil ). Even Islam is the official religion of the federal, any other religions can be freely practiced nationwide. P/s : can't wait to see your silver play button video soon. Congrats mam!

The presenter got it wrong when he said "... for those who are "Malay nationals"...". It is those who are of the Malay race that he meant as "Malay nationals". Malaysians who are of any race are referred to as Malaysians. Malaysia is not a theocratic country therefore it is wrong to call it an Islamic country. Malaysia's federal constitution states that Malaysia's OFFICIAL religion IS Islam and it is agreed that Malaysia would not be a theocratic federation in the Malaysia Agreement signed in 1963 (the agreement that FORMED the Federation of Malaysia (at that time Singapore was one of the partners who formed Malaysia)). Of course the definition of a Malay in the federal constitution is that they practise the Malay culture, speaks the Malay language and most importantly they professes Islam as their religion. Here's another interesting facts - 2/3 of Christians in Malaysia lives in East Malaysia. 07: "Bahasa Malay" - it is currently known as Bahasa Melayu. Back then we know it as Bahasa Malaysia. Or BM for short. It's our national language. 06: He never mentioned that while the nine states in Malaya has monarchs, the other states of Pulau Pinang, Melaka and the Bornean States of Sabah and Sarawak have a governor each. I think this presenter is confused...

Actually the constitution defines a malay ( not malaysian as incorrectly explained in the video) as a muslim but malaysians consist of other non muslims too. The definition of malays in the constitution was basically provided to ensure that malays are recognised as the original people with certain rights during the formation of Malaysia after independence from the British. The malay rulers granted citizenship to chinese and indian laborers imported by the brits, provided that the malays retain special rights as the original people of the country.

1. Islam is an official religion of Malaysia and other religions have the right/freedom to practise their beliefs as stipulated in the Constitution. Malays are mostly born-Muslim, so any dispute or "apostasy" cases will be referred to the court for hearing etc. 2. Malaysia was formed on Sep 16, 1963, is a federation which comprised of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak (or the Kingdom of Sarawak) and North Borneo (Sabah). 3. Malaya reached independence on Aug 31, 1957; Singapore was under self-governance (1955-1963), Singapore joined Malaysia (1963-1965) but left Malaysia on Aug 9, 1965; Sarawak independence was on July 22, 1963; Sabah independence Aug 31, 1963 4. As Malaysia adopts the Constitutional Monarchy (Raja Berpelembagaan) system, the role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) is broad but still subject to the constitution. The Constitution has clearly stated that the power of the Executive, in theory under the authority of the head of government, is exercised by (or on the advice of) a Cabinet or Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister. However, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has the power to elect anyone to be appointed as the Prime Minister who serves His Majesty someone who has not been bound by the wishes of the previous Prime Minister if no party wins the majority vote. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, however, does not have the right and power to remove the Prime Minister.
