I regret getting Copic markers. I wish I had fell in love with water color a little sooner. I thought Copic markers were the be all and end all, but they really weren't. I wish I had just bought some tubed watercolors and put them in a tin.

Copics are beautiful and so popular but I always see how stressed people are about purchasing them. Starting with a small or medium-sized set of decent watercolours like Van Gogh, Cotman, Gansai Tanbi, Mission Gold or White Nights can get all the Copic results for 25-60 dollars including paper and a couple brushes. Good luck.

Leo Meyer i bet you could easily find an artist that feels the same way about their watercolors and would be willing to do a swap. They would be gently/sparingly used and you would be getting a good portion of your investment reinvested to suit your passion. Just choose your swap wisely and ask a lot of questions and request photos.

I have never used Copic markers before and only used watercolors. (And I want to buy some of those markers because they are all the talk. )I usually get the Walmart brand of $4.97, which is around $5 after tax not bad, for 12 tubes, I know there are cheaper options for beginners, like the kids watercolor that’s for 2~3 dollars of bigger packs. I’ve bought a set of acrylics, new brushes and wood circles for a project I’m going to film for under $10 I think it’s pretty good. But yeah you should experiment more with watercolor! It’s very fun and one of my favorite media cuz it’s so pretty

I'M SO HAPPY, geez I was so excited to hear you liked my video! Not going to lie, when I first saw the title I simply thought, "hmm, this sounds familiar...?" but I thought it was just a coincidence until you mentioned me! :D I loved your watercolor tips, I use salt all the time, but now, I don't think I'll ever be able to sprinkle salt onto the paper without doing Adam's excited salt finger rubbing gesture, haha. Highlighters are THE WAY TO GO, they're so amazingly neon! Plus, a really cool hack is if you use a brush with just plain water and drag it over the highlighter linework...it can bleed outwards in beautiful ways and create a neon watercolor effect!

Going to art school doesn't really improve your drawings. It's the practice that makes you improve. While going to an art school can teach you tips and tricks, it's not going to make you draw better. You don't have to go to an art school to improve your skills.

Artist._.Freak yes!! Now I know the difference. I recently got a little set of tortillions, thinking they were blending stumps, and I found them quite hard but decent to blend with. I had a blending stump in a middle school art class and loved it and thought tortillions were the same. I found my blending stump from middle school and have been using it non stop in my sketches!!

I've some other random tips! basically anything can be a pallette, my current pallette is an empty chocolate box (plastic) and I can just wash it out and that's lasted me for ages. also, if you're buying pencils, I don't buy sets but I buy 2H (for sketching) and a 4B (for heavier work) and I don't spend money on pencils I don't use! PS today is my birthday so I'm excited lol

I have never tried any gouache, but this one. The colored pencil's are both watercolor and normal. Water colored one isn't that amazing, but the normal work great from what I've tried. All the marker's I use are water-based. Crayola is also amazing imo, but I use the "children's" version.

As for starting out with the cheapest supplies you can find, maybe good to remember that in some cases the cheap ones will not be as much fun to use, or they can be more difficult to use and that may discourage you from a medium you might otherwise enjoy. I used to hate watercolour, but then I tried better quality colours and loved it. The pigments are brighter and I love how they blend and you can make flower effects. I use St. Petersburg White Nights, which are actually one of the more affordable options, but really great value for money! :D
@przykran

Napuke I've experienced the exact same thing with watercolours and the White Nights are wonderful :D (I got a small set of Cotmans first tho…) I hated how chalky the cheap ones were, I guess some art supplies just can't be cheap 😂

May I suggest for beginner watercolorists, instead of the expensive white knights, to try gansai paints- they're eastern watercolors, only found in pans. They're extremely vibrant, and somewhere between watercolor and gauche. Plus, they're cheap. The most expensive ones are about 2 dollars a pan, but the ones I use are Mozart: at 50c a pan. Additionally, they're about double the size of western pans.

What a great idea for a video, being an artist can be so expensive sometimes 😭 Haha. And YES to the canson watercolour paper. It's my favourite, probably because of the price tag , and I'm weary of trying "better" watercolour paper out of fear of liking them more. I found a handy trick with the canson paper, they sell it in really huge pads too, like 19 by 12, so I've been buying that one lately and chopping it down to size, it makes for lots of paper muahahaha (for fairly cheap)

Here are some helpful tips I know for those in the US (or anywhere if it works): - Bookstores at colleges or universities tend to sell decent supplies at a cheap price, I'm able to buy watercolour paper the size of four of the Canson XL paper at my college bookstore for about $0.50 - $1.00 each! They will also usually sell all grades of pencils too! - Going along with the college theme: if you're thinking of visiting an art supply store, go for stores that are near college/university campuses. They'll usually be cheaper there and will have a large variety of products. If you're a college/university student, they might also offer student discounts. - Half-Price Bookstores are a paradise if you're looking for affordable reference books. I was able to buy a full anatomy book for around $15 and an art book dedicated to the Art Nouveau for even less! - ALWAYS GO FOR THE CHEAPEST ART SUPPLY YOU CAN GET (trust me they'll work just as fine as the high-end brand) - When buying brushes, go for the sizes that caters to how much detail you put into your artwork. If you need a brush that's good for covering large surfaces (or washes) I recommend a flat brush. - If you're thinking of doing calligraphy, try starting with calligraphy markers. I know Speedball sells some under the name Elegant Writer that are just as good as dip pens. - Chisel/Flat tips are good for Blackletter/Gothic fonts and Brush tips are good for Cursive/Elegant fonts. - If you don't have ruler or can't find one you can easily use another piece paper instead! here's my instagram if you're interested: instagram.com/meicrodon/

Love your videos, a one-pencil challenge is a really fun idea, you should try it! I was wondering if you've experienced, that when using grey-tone spectrum noir markers in a sketchbook, it leaves yellow-ish indents on the other pages? It happens quite a lot when I use them for some reason? (PS. The brand, Seawhite of Brighton, makes artist travel journals that takes quite well to watercolours)

I love your watercolor palette from a mint tin idea! One tip I got at an artist day camp once is that you can turn crayola crayons into cheap oil pastels or even almost oil paint by coloring with them normally then painting over them with turpentine or paint thinner. It doesn't take much, just be careful to do it outside with good air circulation to avoid breathing the turp.

The allure of expensive art supplies is strong, but the choice to start with cheaper ones in a medium you haven't tried before is always a good idea! I'd love to see you guys try out the Touch Five markers - they're a set of alcohol markers that are very cheap, and seem to have good reviews. I'm getting some very soon and I can't wait to start playing with them! Also if anyone got some Chameleon or other alcohol markers for Christmas or otherwise, I've found that 100gsm Laser Printer Paper works a treat for blending, and you can pick up a ream of that for pretty cheap! Reams are like 500 sheets so that's a forever amount of practice! It's also way easier to access if, like me, you live on a tiny island with very little in the way of reasonably priced art supplies.

notecards also work, you can use the back for a plain white drawing background or the lined side for a cute doodly type background plus notecards are really durable since sharpies bleed but don't rip the paper

I really love this video, recently I’ve had my friends pick out a few things from my school pencil box for me to draw with and I’ve got need up with some really great results! I don’t have the most “premium” art supplies and the little bit that I do have is from winning art competitions at school and presents from Christmas and birthday. Recently I’ve saved up enough money to buy a few different things, it’s not a lot but I’m really excited for it to arrive and I want to share a quick tip! Don’t get all of one thing when you have money to buy art supplies, buy a few different things! It leaves you with more possibilities and you can mix different supplies!

I have the same kind of water color paper and use half of the page which doubles in amount. BUT I use both sides it's even more paper! I think experimenting a little bit of the page can help determine if you can use both sides

i made my own watercolor sketchbook by cutting the aquarelle paper in half, punching holes near the corners, then using loose binder rings to fasten them. it works out really well for me. plus you can always open the rings (where ever you want in the sketchbook) and put in more paper

When blending, you can also use a paper towel, a napkin, a tissue, or a Q-tip! That way, if you don't like to get dirty (or can't for some reason), you can still blend!

blending stump hack: in high school my art teacher had us fold up a triangle of tissue/paper towel (and tape it to keep it folded up) to use as a blending stump! she would throw a fit if someone tried to blend with their finger because oils on your skin can affect it

Another quick, helpful tip for artists is coupons! Art stores such as Michael's, A.C Moore, Hobby Lobby, etc. have online websites that have coupons (such as 45% off one item). Some places even allow different company's coupons (like Michael's coupons at A.C Moore. And once you buy something, the receipt as a coupon for next week and a 55% coupon if you complete a survey.

4B is my favourite 'one pencil' grade. It's the darkest grade I can get to shade into white on pencil pressure alone, and they sell them in WHSmith. Loo roll is pretty great as well. If you fold a single sheet over, it makes a hard corner that can be used as a guaranteed clean blender. It's also really good for declogging sandpaper used for sharpening graphite or charcoal. Have you looked into homemade casein fixative? All you need is milk, acid (eg. white vinegar), and alkali (eg. baking soda). Heat the milk, add the acid, sieve the glop through a cloth and squeeze it good. Put the contents of the cloth into a container and add a little bottled or distilled water plus the alkali, then mix well and cover airtight. After a few hours and a little stirring, it should be nice and smooth and kind of gluey. This is because it _is_ glue. Diluting it further will make it into fixative. Alcohol will preserve it, and also make it evaporate faster when applied. (Ekofuel is the biz -- meths free, high purity, no dye -- but Barrettine's does have the best Amazon reviews.) I've tried spraying some onto a Moleskine pad to see if it sizes the paper. Results are... not negative, and it does do a good job of reducing ink bleeding and tightening up the lines on my .005 liner. If I can size my own paper easily, then it opens up many more paper types for use with wet media.
