These are ten tricks (or tips?) that I think anyone who uses Tableau should be familiar with. Some are obvious, some are not. Nonetheless, knowing these may help you become more efficient with Tableau and save some time/frustration down the road.
Want to test-run your Tableau skills? I have put together some sample questions that you can try out. The first batch is using Superstore, but I will add more in the coming weeks.

Hello Mam, I must say that you really teach Tableau in a very conceptual way . Before seeing your videos, I took some other courses as well but was always looking for ways to do some stuff and was not really sure why things were happening in a particular way. But now seeing your videos, I am actually able to understand the basic concepts and figure out myself how to do cool stuff! Thanks a lot for these videos

When connecting to a data source from another workbook, does it copy the connection or is it connecting through the other workbook. In other words, can I move/delete the other workbook afterwards or is it required for the connection to work?

This was great, thank you! I have a question. I want to import two files in Tableau and join them. However, before I join them, I want to convert the ID field that I will use as a unique identifier from numeric to character separately, AND then join the tables. But when I do the num-char on one file, how do I retain it when I need to open the other file to perform the same thing? I dont think I can do the num-char convertions after I have already joined the tables, right?
@sqlbelle
@sqlbelle 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Shaila, I think there are a few strategies you can consider. 1. Easiest way may be to try and do calculated joins first ie the join clause will be STR(col from data set 1) and STR(col from data set 2) Here is a reference that may help: help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/joining_tables.htm#joinoncalcs 2. If Tableau Prep is available to you, it would be helpful to do the join and adjust the data types using Prep instead of doing it in Tableau Desktop Do you expect the value to change when you convert the data type? What are the risks of retaining them as numeric values during the join? Another possible alternative to check is the new Relationships data model instead of using a direct join. Hope this helps! Question: After you add a data source on the data source tab, Sheet 1 is orange. A screen tip automatically appears saying "Go to Worksheet." This tip comes up all the time and I find it unnecessary and a bit annoying. How can you disable that screen tip? I am using Tableau Public for now.
@sqlbelle
@sqlbelle 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I am not sure it can be disabled. Or at least maybe I haven't run into how yet. If I find out, I will reply back to this thread.

Hi Arins - I am not sure this could be done easily in Tableau. I suspect it will take some manipulation and perhaps even multiple sheets to make this work. I haven't tried this one before...

Hi Mam Can we create an area chart with 1 date and 3 measures but in y axis it should not break it should be contineous so can u pls help me ?
@sqlbelle
@sqlbelle 3 жыл бұрын
Hello chandra, 1. You can use continuous date. You can right click drag a date field onto your columns and choose a continuous date (the one with green calendar icon). 2. Drag a measure to Columns. This will produce an axis. 3. Drag the second and third measure to the axis that was produced in #2 4. Change the mark type to Area Hope this helps. I think the "10 more Tableau tricks" I show something similar.. Donabel

@@sqlbelle but when we do that in y axis only I want club all the 3 y axis into single and finally I want stacked area chart
@sqlbelle
@sqlbelle 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you chandra. My suggestion above should generate just a single y-axis. The trick is to make sure to drag the additional measures on top of the existing axis (make sure it's not dragging to Row shelf). I may be misunderstanding your question though. Perhaps if you can provide a sketch of what you are trying to accomplish (either a link to an image to Google Drive or OneDrive, I can have a look and will see if I can provide suggestions.
