Steve: I had mastered this, during my training and rearing in London. I went to New York to work with my own CWA 1109 union for a major communications company, VZ. My own union looked down on me as if I came from Mars. They thought I was weird just speaking this way. It was not easy -- especially, being of shade.

as a British person id like to say, we dont call it loo a lot! Why do americans think we are really posh. We say TOILET or BATHROOM so we would know what you were talking about and we stand on the left but tbh there are two escalators normally so we stand on the left and right but we stand on the left to let people in a hurry through. Oh and you need to learn the all round drinks system Oh and if you come over to britain, PLEASE dont try and 'master' the british accent. People from all over britain for example Liverpool dont come to London and put on a london accent because they are there, just do your accent because if you dont we will know and you will probably be the main topic of discussion throughout the rest of the day

Haven't read all the comments so apologies if this has already been pointed out: The majority of these wouldn't really be frowned on all that much. The t-shirt with the flag on wouldn't draw much attention I don't think, and not many people would correct soccer to football except as a jokey dig at the American.

The term 'Soccer' actually originated in England.It is a contraction of Association football and was used in Public Schools as a means of distinguishing it from Rugby,or 'Rugger'.In the nineteen -sixties there was a television highlights programme called 'Star Soccer'shown in the London area,and a popular magazine called 'Soccer Star'. The Americans have their own sport ,which they call'Football' so I think in this instance they are perfectly entitled to use our alternative label for the game.

"Master the British Accent"... Yes, this would be a thankless task, given that there is no such thing. Which of the hundreds of accents in Britain does an American think of when using this term? One might imagine that they mean some sort of artificial Received Pronunciation, 1950s BBC English accent. Send them all to Geordieland, Barnsley, Cornwall, Partick and Armagh and maybe the truth will out.
@Gambit771
@Gambit771 5 жыл бұрын
You know what a British accent is. An accent from Britain or are you going to deny Britain exist. What about North American accent. Do you decry that given how so many people from North and South America love to argue there is only America and everyone from that continent is American? Yanks think of east end (which they mistake as cockney) or RP. You know all this and do not sound clever acting like a pedant.

I might be English myself but the Americans don't normally shout at the top of their voices but speak a few decibels louder than what we're used to. The reason for that is because some of them come from cultures in which you would have to be loud to get your point across.

Wait, I'm an American but I don't anything about escalator etiquettes. Usually the space is too narrow to stand on one side?

I don't understand why tourists still haven't figured out which way to stand on an escalator. In Washington DC, where I'm from, children are thought to stand in the right when they're like 5 years old.

Literally everyone in England says Bathroom, we call it the loo or the toilet as well but I hear my friends saying “hang on I need to go to the bathroom” more than “i need the loo”
@anghinetti
@anghinetti 5 жыл бұрын
ChChilly Vanilli: That's because the lavatory generally is located in a bathroom of a house, whereas Americans will call a public toilet a bathroom even though it contains no bath-tub. That's why...you wouldn't call it a bathroom if simply going for a piss whilst in a pub, for instance.

Firstly nice to see an American wanting to wear the ‘union flag’, the Union Jack is a naval flag. Secondly football was the original name of rugby football, soccer (now known as football came much later) so soccer is correct for the round ball game

I chatted with a British soldier on leave when I was in London several years ago. He had been assigned as a guard at the Tower of London and Windsor Castle for a period of time. He told me, and said every other guard would agree, that the worst, most rude, most arrogant, most disrespectful, most obnoxious, most demanding, most "pushy" and the loudest tourists were without doubt, Americans.
