10 things I hate about 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz

In the first of 2 videos, I review my 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz. Specifically 10 things I don't like about it.
1.Delayed throttle response. I measured 1 second of delay between pressing the gas and anything happening. TFL did this test and estimated 2 full seconds.
2. The doors do not close easily. You have to slam the doors, which feels unnatural being used to new vehicles. If you are used to old cars, you will instinctively slam the doors so it shouldn't be an issue.
3. Interior storage is lacking. There are plenty of missed opportunities to add storage compartments. There is no good place to store sunglasses, and the center console is TINY!
4. No rear armrest. Clearly a cost cutting measure, something I would expect in a cheaper vehicle.
5. No rear USB or climate vent in "Premium" trim. Again, something I would expect in a base model. Plus there are no USB-C ports, which is disappointing in a 2023 vehicle.(Jeep has been installing USB-C since 2018.)
6. Obnoxious chimes. There are a LOT of chimes, and they are obtrusive in my opinion. I was able to turn a few of them off though.
7. Extreme wind noise with roof bars and sunroof. It would be fine with one or the other, not both.
8. No volume knob. Some people prefer buttons, but personally I like a simple knob to control the audio volume.
9. DCT transmission. It feels out of place on a vehicle like this, and the advantage over a conventional automatic is unclear. Hyundai has also had a lot of issues with this transmission, which does not inspire confidence.
10. It doesn't do off-road. It has potential for sure, but Hyundai did not put much effort into that area. During testing, the hill descent control allowed uncomfortably high speeds going down a minor grade. The center "diff lock" did not seem to help when climbing obstacles. After losing traction on a medium difficulty hill climb, the computer took away throttle pedal, shifted the car into neutral (allowing the vehicle to roll backward unexpectedly) and tripped the check engine light. The Santa Cruz is fine for dirt roads or fire roads though!

These are all just such petty complaints. And most of this stuff, you would know about perfectly well before you drove it off the lot. So, if you don't like it then don't buy it. I cracked up over his whole door closing rant. Just push a little harder my dude, and it will close just fine (it is no harder to close the doors on a Santa Cruz than on my Tacoma). There is also plenty of charging available in the car. You don't need to have a charging port and a storage compartment on EVERY SURFACE in the car. Admittedly, I am not the fondest of not having any knobs for radio and AC, but it is still not difficult to learn where things are regardless. We just recently bought our Santa Cruz and we absolutely love it.

Just got my 2023 Santa Cruz sel AWD (California sand)two weeks ago. I love the practicality of it and not getting the terrible gas mileage my full size Ram 1500 got. I love your lift kit and am thinking about upgrading in the not too distant future. Ironically my wife drives a 21 bronco sport and it definitely has better off road capabilities then my SC. But for kids events and grocery getting this is well worth the change. And hauling a push mower and weed eater to the camp site. Also can’t beat the included maintenance plan and warranty with Hyundai. Love your videos please keep them coming !

I never had trottle delay or anything close to a "full second" delay. I also never had any problems with the DCT and I did get the recall work completed. The door issue might be a tiny tiny gripe. I have to push it maybe slightly harder, but it's not much of an issue.

Yeah, I have a Sonata N-Line which, believe it or not, has the same 2.5L turbo and DCT transmission and I've never noticed any delay or any turbo lag for that matter, at least in sport mode. In normal mode the engine does feel held back a little which may be what he's referring to. Does the Santa Cruz have a sport mode?

The funny thing is that most of these are actually better in the SE and SEL trim - I actually drove both and ended up getting an SEL just because of the physical volume knobs, the lack of turbo lag, the tried and true torque converter vs the DCT, etc. The top trims look better but honestly I think they're actually less functional.

*23 Limited* owner here to check in and Make some comments 1- Way exaggerated. What do you think this is a Bugatti? 2- Shut the door harder. Really? Never noticed this 3- Use the center console boo hoo 4- OK fine this one I actually agree with. That and memory seats but who's counting. 5- Then buy a limited why'd you get a 40,000 dollar SEL premium should have got a Limited for literally 1,800-2000 USD more. At the price point of the SEL premium you should have got a SEL activity then you couldn't complain about the DCT bc you wouldn't have it too !!! 6- Turn the chimes off. Literally in the settings to turn 80% of those off. 7- Take the cross rails off and only use them when you are actually... you know.. using them with something attached. Mine are in the garage off. 8- Theres this thing called a mute button its literally on the steering wheel and you hit it once BOOM muted. 9- DCT is essentially the feel of manual transmission thats programmed to shift itself.. of course its kinda jerky. 10 - You want off road? Buy a dune buggy. For what it is the SC is EXACTLY what it is.

Facts across the board. Dude exaggerates everything just like every other wannabe car blogger. The funniest part about the DCT delay that he bitches about is it happens in cars like the Corvette C8 and the Lamborghini Huracan in exactly the same way. The Huracan is almost difficult to drive in city traffic because of it. This is just how DCTs work. It's also sufficiently fast. I traded a stage 2'd WRX and lost basically nothing in performance. If I'm saying that, coming from a manual transmission'd small AWD car sitting at over 500hp, the average SC buyer can take it to the bank.

- You lifted it? Or just put larger wheels/tires on it? Either way you modified the vehicles dimensions thus taking it out of factory parameters, and warranty. - Close your door firmly, not with a love tap - Storage is provided in the door panel, even for a water bottle. "Side of center console storage" is wasted space. - A sunglasses holder? Really? The way you were bouncing around like the Santa Cruz is a rock crawler? Use the deep well center console (it's great for keeping your 4 pairs of glasses from piling up on the floor given the pic you provided) - Rear armrest? It's not an RV, Expedition nor Suburban, it's a mid-size Sport Utility Vehicle. Embrace the concept. - The Chimes? Turn them off if you so choose. That option is standard. Be Safe or Unsafe, your choice. - Also, regarding the volume of the radio... Use the conveniently and safely located controls on the steering wheel. The station can be changed here as well. - It is not 4WD, some are optioned with AWD, which you clearly demonstrated to work perfectly. This system delivers torque to the wheel in need. In summary, this vehicle is not for you. It is clear you do not understand the design. Always Read Your Owner's Manual.

- it's definitely NOT a midsize Sport Utility Vehicle (aka: SUV)... for Hyundai that would be a Santa Fe or Palisade. SUVs DO come with rear sear armrests. The Santa Cruz is a COMPACT TRUCK... Embrace the concept. Lookup "Midsize SUV"... you get Santa Fe and Palisade amongst others... Lookup "Compact SUV"... for Hyundai you get Tucson. The Santa Cruz isn't midsize anything, nor an SUV... it's a compact, and it's a truck. It's closest competition is the Ford Maverick. Maybe the guy who made the video actually should have bought an SUV... which the Santa Cruz is not.

I have the limited trim and it’s definitely a nice ride. I use it as my work truck for errands and trips to homedepot. I prefer it over my Range Rover sometimes. I have roof racks and yes with the sunroof open it can be loud but that’s with any car with roof rails I’ve owned. When the sunroof is closed there is very limited sound coming in. As far as the power it definitely gets up and goes when I need it to. The only thing I could say it’s lacking for a top trim is parking sensors. I just make sure I turn the surround view cams on when I park. I did have some mechanical issues that fixed themself. I was driving from Louisiana to South Carolina and I lost a lot of power with the engine light flashing. I just gave it more power high rpm until it started driving normal again. I didn’t stop because i was scared it would die 🤞 The dealer did find the code that was thrown that went Away. Ended up needing new injectors. I enjoy the lane centering feature probably the most. Other cool features are the cooled seats( that actually work), ambient lighting colors, retractable locking bed cover, led headlights are very bright for night driving, the app is very convenient and love the reminders if I forget to lock it, what You get for 40k is definitely a great value.

My 2023 Limited does not have a delay in throttle response. You may want to check the drive mode. It sounds like you're in Snow mode. All of my doors shut easily. The rear passenger area on my Limited has AC vents and two USB ports in the back of the center console. As for USB-C, you can always add a small adapter. When you're talking about roof bars, I'm assuming that you mean the crossbars that connect to the roof rails. Well, if you're going to be carrying things on your roof, you aren't going to be open the sunroof. You do realize that there is also a volume control on the steering wheel, right? All you need to do is hold up or down. You don't have to keep pressing the button. The one on the display is for the passenger to use. Also, you can just hold your finger there until you get the level you want. You don't have to keep hitting the button. It is not an off-road vehicle. It is an AWD vehicle. It will handle much better in snow and rain than a 4WD. So, I haven't seen your video regarding what you love about the Santa Cruz, but I just don't think you understand the vehicle.

The thing has plenty of zing in smart mode. I don't understand a negative response to the 2.5 turbo. It gets 20 plus miles per gallon. I got 10 to 12 miles per gallon out of my truck.

COOL! A reviewer who also talk about reliability and durability of the engine and transmission. That's what I like. I don't care about gadgets or gas milage. A car to me is an investment and I hold on to my investments long term. 10 year sis a nice warranty, buy a car should just be breaking in at 100k. If the tranny or engine start to fail at 100k then there are huge repair bills in the works--especially if it's a hybrid. I'm always amazed at teh people I know who complain about not having enough money but then buy or lease a new car every 3 to 5 years and always, always, have car payment. Car companies that make cheap cars must love these people. I swear that some cars are intentionally made to last just past the warranty. but if people would buy something intended and made to last then, voila, you've got extra money in your pocket when the car is paid off. Funny how that works. I'll watch more of your videos to see if you continue to also talk about reliability and durability.

The door thing is a Hyundai quirk. I had that issue on a 2020 Elantra and traded into a 2022 Santa Cruz and still have the same problem where the doors don’t completely close on the first shut.

I feel like the door thing is a non issue . My ten year old Xterra is like that because it has chunkier molding on the bottom of the doors to keep it water tight. I’ve always had to muscle the door shut . It’s kinda knitpicking .

This was annoying me for the first month and a half, now my door and the rear passenger door are closing properly (Daddy daycare drop off!). I also find if the fan is on high and recirculation is enabled, the pressure makes it harder to close as well.

Yeah my camry is kinda the same when i first bought it. I cleared the memory of the transmission and drove it faster when taking off. Now its more responsive. Still isnt as responsive as i want when i really stomp on it. My advice would be to clear the transmission memory and drive it faster on take off for like 50 miles maybe and then your transmission will be more responsive

The fact that you have to give a little extra push to shut the door, means it shuts tight. As for the red light take off, it's funny that you stopped the video 2 seconds after you left the red light, that is because the Santa Cruz will fire off like a rocket

Some observations from someone with the sister vehicle of the Santa Cruz, I own the 2023 Tucson Hybrid SEL, which has the same infotainment screen and features. 1) I prefer volume knobs over buttons... having said that... there is a volume rocker on the steering wheel, and pressing it doubles as a mute. 2) Chimes. Most if not all of them can be turned off. 3) DCT... you seem to know it's history... more on this at the end 4) Storage and interior configuration... more on this at the end 5) Problems with off-road, and "Lifted"... you put bigger rims/tires than factory... you know this is going to completely dork the AWD which computes for factory rims/tires, right? Conclusion... most of the problems and issues you have with this vehicle you could have easily spotted by.... I dunno... watching a video review, reading a sales pamphlet, actually looking at it at the dealership... test driving it. There is NOTHING in this video you complained about that you couldn't have noticed BEFORE you bought the car with just a tiny weenie amount of effort and research on your part... aside from the AWD performance after completely changing out the rims and tires. Did you research this car AT ALL? Or did you just see a 30 second commercial on TV for it and mailed a check to your local dealership sight unseen? If I'm spending $40,000 dollars or something, I'm damn sure going to do my research BEFORE I plump down the cash... it literally seems like you did ZERO research... none, nada, zip... you're complaining about tons of things you should have known BEFORE you bought it. I literally did months of research before I chose my 2023 Tucson Hybrid... I knew more about the Tucson than the sales staff did. Yeah, I'm not crazy about the lack of a volume knob, but I knew about it before I bought it and I also knew about the volume rocker on the steering wheel which I always use. I LOVE my Tucson Hybrid... wouldn't trade it for the world... but do your research BEFORE you buy a car... watching your video it seems you mailed in a check and had no clue what you were buying.

I've had my Santa Cruz for approximately 9 months and have had nothing but issues. There are too many to name at this point. This new car has sat more than I've used it. Is there a refund issue with this car? I'm almost afraid to put this car on the highway.

Although I love the car (truck), I have a longer list that you. I also just dropped off at dealer with 5800 miles and 2 Engine Codes, 1 Transmission code and something failing on the blind spot monitor. My doors aren’t great. Worse the back was open, didn’t give a warning light until I drove around the first corner and my kid was in the back… What about not having parking sensors?!? I have the Limited so 360 camera but still would be helpful to have the sensors. Almost hit something obscured in the camera. Completely agree on the DCT. I almost got the base to get away from that but wanted the 281hp… Good luck!

Totally agree about the DCT. Will avoid any future vehicle with one. I currently have an 2018 Tucson and it has the dry DCT, but it just makes the vehicle feel cheap, and not safe to drive in certain situations. Love the Santa Cruz, but won’t buy till they wise up on the dct choice.

According to people in the SC forums, the DCT drivetrain improves gas mileage w/the turbo. I will agree about the lag. It's almost like a 1 speed manual haha. I get anywhere from 25-35 mpg depending on how I drive it.

Really like the wheel and tire setup on this one. I own a 2023 SEL Non Turbo regular SEL. I do not have the delay on acceleration as I don’t have the DCT. There is no design flaw with the doors on these vehicles. The interior does lack extra storage areas and overall space. I keep my sunglasses in the center console. In the rear under the seats, I have removed the cargo tray as it takes away from your under seat storage. I’ve got my jack stored in the “cooler” of the bed. I never ride in the back of mine, but Hyundai definitely could have put a rear arm rest back there. Lack of rear plug ins and vents is disappointing. Picking on chimes is seriously just nitpicking though. My volume in the SEL is a rolling type button, but I never use that anyway, I use the button on the steering wheel… I imagine you could do the same. To me it’s worth having less HP with the non turbo, so I can have a solid transmission. 12k trouble free miles. DCT does not perform off road very well, but my traditional 8-speed auto handles moderate off road driving nicely - I have a video on my channel showing how I tested mine. I’m considering lifting mine slightly and getting all terrains to do more off roading without having to sweat about my ground clearance and tires giving me trouble.

I looked with anticipation for the return of small pickups, but the Santa Cruz and the new Maverick have such small beds that they don't provide the main benefit of a pickup. My VW Sportwagen could carry more cargo than either of them. Years ago I had a Chevy S10 pickup work truck with only the small cab for 2 but a regular bed. If someone sold that configuration today I would buy one.

Some of the issues are pretty easy to adapt to, mute and volume on the steering wheel can be used for one, and the doors just need a little more closing force, really very nit-picky (IMO). If these bother you so much, maybe the purchase wasn't a good one for you or you need to spend more time with your initial evaluation?

I just bought the Tucson Hybrid blue, I love it, don't get me wrong, but yea, the volume knob and climate control shouldn't be something you have to search for or press multiple times. I miss the one quick turn motion. I've already figured out that the volume and seek buttons for media on the steering wheel will be something I absolutely will be breaking fairly quickly. and that they are in the wrong position. Seek should definitely be on the outer left for the sheer fact that you'll be switching through your playlist or scrolling through a podcast 1000 times more than you will be playing around with the volume. I will have my nose in the user manual for a while because of all the safety features, but I love the gas milage, its a joy to drive and for the amount of horse power I get I don't losing the extra few miles I might have gotten with another Hybrid, like a Rav 4 or even a Ford. I have no regrets with this SUV!
