In a time of bad news let's focus on some excellent things. Corvus Belli and Infinity are excellent escapes from day-to-day stresses and even though it's easy to focus on the very few things they get wrong I want to focus on the many things they do so well.
From the exceptional team and their passion to the community of players there's something special about this game and the people that play it.
Here are the top 10 things I love about Infinity the game. Do you also think these things are awesome about Infinity the game or are there other things you're really grateful for?

What really made me love infinity, apart from the lovely aesthetics, is the ARO mechanic.

I think the ARO system is what gives infinity the balance. Most table top games just let you sit there in second turn and watch your army get shot to pieces. With ARO, you have a chance to dodge or shoot back. Disrupting the other players game plan.

Although I've collected quite a few infinity models, I've never played Infinity. Infinity introduced me to Angel Giraldez, who is the painter of a lot of their feature minis, and got me into improving my own painting. I've recently purchased the Infinity Defiance Kickstarter, which I'm now assembling and painting. I used the Infinity minis for TRAVELLER RPG's mostly. I've never played any skirmish games, not even GW. Recently got the Infinity 2d20 Modiphius RPG books, as the lore seems interesting and I'm more of a Game-master for Roleplaying sessions. Maybe on day I'll play skirmish, maybe Infinity Defiance will be the gateway... dunno yet, I'll just worry about painting the 100+ minis right now, lol.

Angel is an epic master of the craft and I'm also an avid follower. Weirdly I hadn't heard of him until playing Infinity either. He's the mini wargaming world's best kept secret I think!

I was curious about the rpg, is one of those I'm evaluating for starting a scifi rpg (been DMing only D&D for more than 20 years and want a change of setting). What's your opinion on it? What do you feel are its pros and cons? Would you say it's good also for newbies or just for hardcore gamers? What about the mechanic of Momentum/Heat, does it work? Which manuals do you feel are good purchases? PS: sorry for the wall of questions, I'm just trying to get as much data as I can ^^".

@@mrmaster9801 Well so far (I haven't ran the game yet for my group) But I have read through the materials. "Corebook" and "Adventures through the Human Sphere" felt like the necessary books to start with. AttHS has a good foundation of adventures to understand the structure of the adventures, and gives you many examples to draw from. The Corebook pretty much has everything you need to start playing. If you want to, the collection of Faction Books (what look like setting books), are actually additional player generation extras for that faction... and some cool fluff for the Gamemaster. 2d20 system is different than traditional d20 D&D, so you'll need to get your head into it, success rolls and how many "successes" run the game mechanics, Damage is a lot different than d20. Each 2d20 game (Star Trek/Conan...) has some differences tweaked to the genre. Difficulty wise... It can be heavy to read through, and you have to approach it by clearing your brain of any d20 system, you are starting over on a clean slate.
@28mmRPG
@28mmRPG 2 жыл бұрын
As for Starships and stuff like that... there is less focus, it's there but not as defined and detailed as TRAVELLER, or Stars without Number. The focus is on the individual player characters and missions. A lot of para-military and some slice-of-life. Infinity is a skirmish game front and foremost, and the RPG builds on it by giving you more fluff to draw on in the setting. As for core ideas... it focuses on combat missions and super-spies... not so much exploration... though you could throw that in. The core of it is the "known" interlocking systems and the "known" conflict areas vs the Combine or "spy vs spy" antics of the factions... TRAVELLER is more episodic explorers or ship-centric, "the unknown" is used a lot more.

@@28mmRPG thanks, that was a nice explanation, brief yet clear 👍🏻. I'm aware of the importance of having an open mind with regard to the 2d20 system, but is nice to have it underlined by someone who actually read the manuals. I suppose I'll have to try the game before choosing if running it, I'll look for some group and put it to the test.

As a Spanierd who met the game here in Scotland, I absolutely love Carlos and his enthusiasm. His English might not be the best, he got an strong accent and sometimes he overuse some words (ok), but his charm and karisma are equal to none in the "wargaming community". When I started demoing in 2009, Infinity was uknown more or less everywhere. Tiny pockets of small 3-4 player clubs started to gather, 12 players tournaments at most... while 40k and other games were experiencing their golden age maybe. It was difficult, but I love how nowadays all has changed, and there are even dedicated youtube channels such as yours. Something unimaginable back then :)

Come now, they're not releasing new editions to refine and improve what they've already got. They're overhauling the system as quickly and often as possible so that you'll have to buy all new books (and when you discover your existing army is nerfed or outright illegal, all new models too). That's the only way they can support their ridiculous release schedule. So glad when I got that monkey off my back for good.

Personally I believe you’re right with their methodology. A game that’s been around as long as 40k shouldn’t need as many game defining tweaks as it gets.

My favorite thing about infinity. There are very few "trash" profiles in the entire game. There tweaks that would be nice for some armies but as someone with tohaa, spiral corp, JSA, CA (shasvastii/morat) and aleph. I can tell ya even forces that lack standard or obvious options do have access to interesting if less consistent tools. It is simply a matter of altering your play style and taking advantage of unfamiliarity with the units creating an asymmetric peace trade.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 2 жыл бұрын
100% this. I’ve even lamented that a favourite unit is unless me only to find that a mission comes around where it’s the perfect tool. There’s something for everyone in each faction.

Such a great video bro! Yeah, its such a different game and the fact that everything is free was astonishing to me. The ariadna drew me in with werewolves and the scottish clans, and getting my french partner to play the frenchies was hilarious made it more epic with her thick french accent. 40k became overly competitive with huge games that lasted over 4 hours in 8th edition, and when I did play a game it felt like a buy to win format. I also like Mordheim, both infinity and Mordheim are skirmish games with free rules. Infinity has such a great rule system and Carlos is the icing in the cake haha. Looking forward to your codeone and eventual N4 coverage. Also if you know any great discords for infinity that would be very helpful. Cheers bro. Also great editing!

I gave up on 40k and GW about a year ago but I think in light of recent shenanigans, it helps to show all these disaffected and alienated players that there are some game companies out there that love their players as much as the game - that treat customers fairly and aren't just seeking every opportunity to squeeze another penny out of you. Aside from those fanboys with terminal cases of Stockholm Syndrome, I think most 40k players would be hard-pressed to honestly find something to criticize about Infinity.

Very good video and completely true! But I'd like to add: 11) Brilliant rules that keeps both players engaged all the time! 12) An international tournament system, if you're interested in the ranking and competition part of the hobby. 13) Balanced armies. Corvus Belli are open with win-ratings for different factions and the difference between upper and lower tier armies is so small, that talking about different tiers almost is ridiculous. 14) Internal balance. You go and buy a model/unit because it looks cool. In another game this might be a mistake, that unit is crap in the game. In Infinity all models are usable and have a purpose. Not all armaments of all the models might be used that much but with the generous proxy rules no-one will bat an eyelid when you use model X with weapon Y as model X with weapon Z. The model you think is cool will always be usable. I could go into a lot more details that's great, but trying to keep it short here 😉

11 and 13 were on my original list but had to make way for other points. I think we can all agree that there are more than 10 reasons to love Infinity and CB! The balance in the armies is a real unsung hero in CB’s work. As is the ‘rule of cool’ still enabling you to have a good list. Honestly there’s so much these guys have got right that I could easily do a follow-up 10 reasons and still not cover everything.

Excellent video and couldn't agree more with your top 10. So glad I came across your channel. Like you I'm a complete newbie to Infinity....mind you I dare say you are a hell of a lot more clued up on the game than I am so apologies on that. I tried the game a couple of years back with Red Veil but sadly it just sat and got ebayed. However things have changed our local gaming store has a number of new players and a couple of very experienced players and that got me back into the game. Just before Christmas last year I got Operation Coldfront and Beyond Coldfront as I really like Ariadna forces. I was very tempted by Op Wildfire but this was the way I went. I've completed my Ariadna unit from the start set and just getting going on the Beyond Coldfront miniatures. I bought the N3 book set as I like a good book. I'm yet to read into it fully, but I. Really enjoying the get started book and weve so far played through the missions in my book. Before the pandemic we were looking at playing through the wildfire Missions as one of our layers has that boxset. I'll be looking at improving my knowledge and thanks for all your work and intro to Code one. I'm looking at buying the Kaldstrom set. I live the scenery and either Pan O or Yjing I can see as another army. I'm looking to fully develop my Ariadna first though. Thanks for all your videos and keep up the great work

You’re so welcome. I’m hoping to do more content that helps new players get into Infinity through Code One as I fully understand how difficult it can be. There’s definitely a big difference between the missions in the box sets and the main rules, especially with N3. Im hoping Code One changes all of that and works as a transition phase between box set rules and N4. Having done all the Wildfire missions I was surprised that they missed out so much of the N3 rules and if it wasn’t for an excellent group of more experienced players I would never have grasped the game to a level where I could enjoy it. Ariadna are so cool! Every time I’ve played against them I’ve enjoyed the models and their abilities. Pan O and Yu Jing are also excellent choices and I was super tempted to get Koldstrom. Let me know if there’s particular content you’d find valuable going into Code One and N4 😁

@@the_infinitygamer I love the challenge of in-depth rules so as I finish reading up on my Operation Coldfront book and move onto the double book of N3 I m looking to get much more knowledgeable about the game certainly as I get into the rule section. I know N4 is coming but it doesn't annoy me funnily enough. I am totally blown away at the quality and detail of the miniatures. I thought they were good but when I got them painted, I was just in awe. I had a lot of fun painting up my Ariadna force just got the Ratnik to go. I have him built, based and ready for final paintwork. Again what a miniature!! Like yourself I am hoping the Code One really makes the transition from starting to advanced rules a lot easier as I can see its a big jump from what we both have in our starter sets to the N3 ruleset. I hope to show you my miniatures sometime and see what you think. Im looking forward to the Alephi faction of my set and then the Beyond Coldfront set. Ive been watching the videos of Carlos who is just such a character and the more I listen to him the more I understand. He had that slide showing how balanced the various factions are. Glad to see Ariadna kicks butt, but this game is definitely about the skill of the player which is great. Im definitely going for the Kaldstrom set as Im liking very much both factions and the scenery as well. I bought the scenery you have in Wildfire separately as my Cold front was the thinner card type. I beefed that scenery with inserted foamboard boxes so coupled with the newer scenery packs its looking great already and there is so much cool stuff out there now for infinity. Id personally appreciate a little tutorial around the Corvus Belli Army builder just to get my head into it. It looks amazing but me being a complete newbie I was a bit taken aback by how it all works. I probably have to just play with it a bit more. Some how to plays and expanding on Code one would be fantastic and much appreciated. A bit of history into each of the factions would be great . Thanks again for your great channel and thoroughly enjoying the work you do. Take care and look forward to more content

Yes!!! Thank you for this video. It’s funny, I figured you were going to bang on about stuff like rules and that I was going to jump into this comments section and say ... well, everything you said in this video! So let me bang on about the rules: Order and AROs .. most amazing devised things ever. Break it down ... Orders - is any game as dynamic as Infinity? The answer is no, because Orders and the activation mechanism of this game is so extraordinary. It allows for freedom not found in any other game. One of my biggest problems about Warhammer is that, when it’s not your turn, you aren’t doing anything. You spend half your game not doing anything. In Infinity ITS NEVER NOT YOUR TURN. Your reactive turn is still your turn, and you are still 100% engaged. Also, just as totally amazing is the movement in Infinity. And what I mean by that is the concepts of firing at anyone at any point along a models movement path. Again, lending itself to the dynamic nature of the game. Really, is there any other game that lets you step out of total cover, shoot someone, and then step back into cover? The dice rolling is so unique. Really, is there any other game that rewards an 11, 12, or 13 on a d20 roll?
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 жыл бұрын
^^^^ THIS! I ended up with 12 points I wanted to cover and the 11th one was game mechanics. I LOVE the ARO element of this game and the fact it means you’re not a spectator for half of it. The 12th point was communication. The fact you’re playing with your opponent and not against them. Yes you’re trying to win but not through misleading the person opposite you or being stupidly sneaky with Grey area rules. I agree with you 100%. Orders and AROs are such a cool mechanic.
@shinankoku2
@shinankoku2 4 жыл бұрын
Infinity Gamer ^^^^ THIS TOO! Let me throw in one more thing ... the thirteenth point, if you’d please. Infinity is very cinematic. Whenever I play, everything that happens creates a movie in my mind. Whenever someone immobilizes HI, we talk about the hacker locking up servos. When they’re in isolated state, my friends and I spend a moment to describe the gnarly porn we just filled the target’s visor with. Firefights between snipers and HMG wielding HI, oniwabans stepping out of shadows with monofilament blades, the confusion created by losing your LT. This all plays into the visual feel of the game for me. For all it’s vaunted grim dark aesthetic, Warhammer does nothing in its rules set that is so atmospheric as Infinity. They’re pretty models, sure, but the rules themselves do nothing to heighten any sense of atmosphere about what’s going on. You just march and fight and roll d6s.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 жыл бұрын
And you get SL of that before your desperate ARO achieves a crit and you drop a rampaging Sheskiin as she’s carving up your entire squad. We spend so much tome with our head in our hands not believing how the game just panned out. A great strategy and list can run into some very unexpected outcomes!

Open the PDF of the missions (free from CB), pick one at random, then use Army Creator (free from CB) to make a list for that mission. Even talk about how you are going to use X figure to proxy for X profile. I think a general rule of thumb for a "good" proxy is to try to match the weapon and armor. So it's not confusing when it comes time to interact. Its' not fair to have say a Kappa, proxy for an Omega (if you have some sort of Heavy that you can use).
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a brilliant suggestion! I’ll do that when the Code One army builder is up for O12. I agree with you on the proxy. As similar as possible definitely helps and when my 40k friend would use very different models to proxy I used to get really frustrated. I guess with Infinity if you don’t know what it should look like it’s harder to be confused. You should always do the best you can though for sure.

@@the_infinitygamer I've found since the beginning, in the US anyway, everyone is pretty lenient on proxy just because they did't have a model for a certain profile. But since they've opened it up more, it can make for more creativity. For instance, my Ikari, who I think of as pirates, every single figure is being painted differently. Even my Druze, they have same colors but in different places. But I also use an Aleph figure for a Bounty Hunter, A Nomad for a liberto, etc.

That’s an excellent way of making everything look different. A friend who plays Combined does the same and has a really vibrant scheme that’s lovely to see on the table. I think that there’s a lot more encouragement to bring personal touches to your army. There’s no faction colour schemes you’re encouraged to adhere by.

😂😂😂 this hobby is a lot less painful on the wallet. I know what you mean. Starmada plus the rules and the exclusive minis is all still cheaper than Indomitus and I won’t need anything on top of that to field a full army in my tournament.

I definitely hear you on the cost aspect... It's nice to be able to spend just $200 CAD on an army if I so wish, instead of barely being able to make a 500 point force with that same amount of cash in 40k. ....Says the fox that's spent probably $500 on his Haqq force, but on the flipside I have most of the box sets, and definitely didn't have to - work gave a decent sized bonus, and watching how COVID-19 was developping back in February, I went "screw it, I'll buy enough minis to work on all year and get others I might be interested in later on" just in case restocking became a difficult thing for retailers. Local guys are pretty good too - I'm looking forward to going to the local satellite tournament next year (Colder Than Carbonite)!
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 жыл бұрын
Will that be your first tournament? I agree fully, plus they’ll drop new rules making something good for a bit so you buy it then hit it hard with the nerf bat 🤣 Great work on getting the box sets. I bet you’re glad to have a big project to dive into!

@@the_infinitygamer Carbonite will indeed be my first infinity tournament, and I'll probably only have maybe a dozen games under my belt before it comes around (unless the locals find a way to get me into their ladder matches/tournaments they run during the year) And ohhh yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to having a nice long term project, although I really could use a shelf to store them on that's near my painting desk instead of having them take up a decent amount of space on my gaming table!

I'm just about to get into Infinity as I love the models. I've amassed nearly 400 Pinterest pictures of Infinity miniatures & the paint schemes are amazing. I'm going to sell ALL my GW miniatures as the hobby is getting expensive. I've seen a few video's of single player GW games due to lockdown, are there any for Infinity or Code One?

Easily my favourite miniatures game followed by malifaux. It scratches my list building and customisation itch from 40k. I love that it's largely balanced. Whenever people say "what faction should I get and what should I avoid" the answer is "no wrong answers they all work well get what you think looks good". My biggest criticism is that the terrain can cause balance issues if you're inexperienced at setting it up. It's so easy to not notice an open fire lane that just makes the board very one sided
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 жыл бұрын
You’re completely right. But it shows how mentally scarred people are from playing 40k that they think they need to get a powerful faction to enjoy the game. Terrain does have a major role to play. I’m looking to do some videos in the coming months on terrain and set-up to make it easier for new players to get that right.

@@the_infinitygamer it's even worse at the other end of the scale where you pick an army so bad it's basically unplayable or one that's about to get completely redone which would change all your choices. It has such a high start up cost (not to mention the time it takes) that people have to consider things like that which is a real shame. How have you got on with assembling infinity models? I find them so fiddly and frustrating sometimes. It was worse in the old days though where each little antenna was a separate bit. Also you mention translation problems, the 1st edition rulebook was famous for this, parts of it make no sense so they've come a long way.
@the_infinitygamer

I remember seeing a tournament win/loss average and the gap between top and bottom was disgusting. Then Carlos shows the Infinity version and it’s so marginal it’s almost non existent. I also love that you don’t have to spam ten units of the same model to have a competitive list. I was a little frustrated at some of the gaps on some models. My Gamma has quite a large one and the Gwailo’s foot wouldn’t touch the base. With plastic at least they can be manipulated to fit more easily. After adding some greenstuff though I now cannot tell at all. I find I have more patience when I’m only doing one or two models a time rather than a pack! Have you had issues with any models in particular?
@redyellowpink01
@redyellowpink01 4 жыл бұрын
@@the_infinitygamer yeah it's weird GW always maintain they're not out to make a competitive ruleset, makes you wonder if it would be that difficult to at least try. You're right it's very nice not to have to pay the troop tax. I started playing in 1st ed so the models i had trouble with are mostly out of production. I had a nomads meteor zond which I could not get to stay in one piece. The two side parts are connected with tiny ball joints and have to support a lot of weight as it's on a flying stand. I had an old szalamandra which was ok once it was together but the parts are so heavy I think I used araldite in the end. Plus it had an ammo feed which I ended up just cutting off because i couldn't get the ends to match up. All the troops had little antenna and they were all separate tiny pieces, the old hellcat hmg was bad because each of the little fins on the jump pack were separate. I was away for the whole of 3n and they seem much better now. You're right it's better when you're just doing one or two guys. I'm just salty because I just did the whole code one box in one sitting after not having assembled a metal model for about 6 years 😂.
