I grew up in New York and lived in Manhattan until I was 30. Then I moved and lived all over the USA as well as Europe and was gone for many years. When I returned to New York after 45 years I felt like I was coming home. Although the city changed somewhat it still felt the same to me as all those years ago. You can take the girl out of the city but you can't take the city out of the girl! It will always be home to me no matter where I find myself.

I moved to NYC (da Bronx) August 2011, from a small city in Canada. Best move ever, love the city, everyday I would take the subway into work ( Manhattan and Queens). Got to work on the WTC and LGA projects. I moved to California and still dream of returning to NYC. I agree with your 10. The community is wonderful, I miss my wonderful friends

I used to live in Bergen County, would ride my bike a couple of blocks to the Palisades & there was Manhattan, always loved going to the museums, Radio City at Chridtmas, but moved to the Midwest, I go back every few years to visit & stay with family in Bayridge in Brooklyn & just love it. You are so right about people joining in a conversation. I love the energy, the food, the museums like The Cloisters. I miss living so close to it and it is more than a City, it is a state of mind. I have been to many cities across America, but none like NYC. It is the best & love your videos, will be back next summer

Just moved to Brooklyn from California and I love it here. You are right about the pride and nostalgia. I’ve never seen so many businesses and restaurants so proud of their city (Brooklyn) You see and feel the pride. I also wanted to mention that you were a big reason in helping me take the big leap to NYC. The more videos I watched the more motivation you gave me. A HUGE thanks! Side note: I now work in Park Slope so I’m digging your videos even more 👍🏾

Good video, I was born here and came back to live 6 years ago and there is no place like nyc. Here’s what I’ve learned as a New Yorker Sometimes I just need to travel and get out of the city and it’s great to get that escape but I’m always glad to come back to it. It’s also a great city for travelers because there are plenty places to travel to within New York. Or at least give that same feeling you get being somewhere new and it’s just a subway ride away.

I love the fact its alright to "interupt a conversation if they think they can add to it"because I do that all the time but for some people here in the UK espcially in certain places they seem to think its extremely rude and are bothered by it...not always of course but I love the idea its actually a thing in NYC and something socially acceptable..I so wish I had gone to NYC many years ago,I think it would have suited my personality just fine

Agree with everything you said. I was born in Manhattan, grew up in Queens, returned to Manhattan (upper west side) for 11 years after finishing school, then left for Boston and now live in Florida. Whether I'm in Tokyo or Tuscany, when someone learns I'm from NYC, that's all they want to talk about. When I visit NY (was there just last week) I'm always struck by the energy, creativity and excitement you feel just walking the streets, which is one of the best ways to spend time in NY as the streets provide an endless show. Proud to be a native New Yorker and looking forward to my next trip.

I spent one long weekend 10 years ago in Manhattan with my sister (who lived in Nyack for 15 years) and it was so much fun. We definitely bonded as adults that weekend, eating, drinking and walking everywhere and seeing the sights...but not nearly enough time, we didn't even get to lower Manhattan!

I had a very nice experience in NYC with train conductors. I was stading at the platform frowning on my phone as I was looking for the direction and the conductor was so nice that he asked me if I´m lost and if I need help. He even told me with which train I should go and he also walked out of the booth! I did not expect that, will never forget how nice he was.

I go shopping at night. Sometimes fishing at night. The only time I leave Brooklyn is to see my favorite hockey team. The NY RANGERS. Big RANGERS fan. The trains I like. I like the subway . Especially the older Subway cars. You showed in the video one of my favorite subway cars. The R32. Great video.

I was born and raised in NYC until I was eight years old and moved to Florida in January of 1981. I still cherish those memories of living in Astoria Queens and visiting Astoria Park and the East River on Shore Boulevard and 21 Avenue looking at the river and at the Hellgate Bridge and the Bronx and the ConEd smoke Towers in my childhood and visiting Manhattan and celebrating Christmas and many holidays. I do miss living in Park Slope but moving up to Rochester was still the best move for me. I realized how much I love to hike and be outdoors. I can be downtown Rochester which reminds me of Brooklyn and then be out to the most remote areas of 2,000 foot hills in 45 minutes. It just depends your lifestyle. But I love your videos because I can still see what is going there.

Having lived in Hudson County my whole life, I have been to the city a thousand times, but haven't become obsessed with it until the pandemic hit. When it was empty, I began to really embrace it. Hi Jon. We were talking about this earlier this morning, among friends; It takes double digit years for true wisdom and knowledge to dawn on us. Because we've spent the past chunk of time in one place, learning and growing up. (in sober terms) it takes double digit sobriety to really "know" something deep inside you. I've lived in Montreal now 20 years, longer than I've lived anywhere in my life, to date. Great video !!

Here's a brief story I have about one of our Amtrak trips in the 1990s from Boston to visit a friend in Park Slope in Brooklyn who lived at the corner of Montgomery Place and Park Slope West: A friend and I typically went in the winter and one time, when we exited the subway, the wind and cold was ferocious at the high point near the Civil War memorial arch. We and the other people who exited were making a mad dash in the dark to our destinations to get out of the elements when a huge rat crossed our paths! We all let out screams to varying degrees but kept hustling without losing our strides. I guess we presumed the rat was doing the same! Edit: Prospect Park West, not Park Slope West.

New york never fails to reinvent itself. I moved from queens in 88 as a kid and have lived in Los Angeles, Oregon, and currently texas. I've been visiting NY every year for the last 6 years and ready to move back permanently. Its just a different feel being in the city than any other place I've been. People aren't worried about what the next man is doing and aren't concerned about fitting in. That's my favorite part, the security of being different and not worried about being seen as different. Ill be back Dec 28th

Just got back from Anime NYC; Never lived in New York but I did attend a Knicks home game at MSG against my visiting Houston Rockets and I have never seen a more loyal, enthusiastic fan base than Knicks fans. Their pre-and mid-game entertainment was filled with images of the most iconic New York landmarks, etc...the sense of regional pride was palpable. Also little things like the smartly pressed uniforms of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) conductors, the obvious sense of civic pride they took in their work, etc. Then there's passive-aggressive relationship pedestrians have with drivers in Manhattan....the crosswalk signals seem to be merely a friendly suggestion...for pedestrian and drivers alike! Though I never actually heard "Hey, I'm walkin' here!", you can definitely FEEL that sentiment on the streets of Manhattan and understand why it's such a world-famous New York-ism. The subway IS intimidating but always read the signage, it never steers you wrong. Pay attention to the distinction between uptown/downtown and between express and local train and that's half the battle. Like any other subway system in the world, you have to know the final station on each line to know for sure if it's taking you where you want to go, etc. I just barely scratched the surface but I'm glad I was able to make my way from Midtown to South Ferry, ride to Staten Island for lunch, come back, explore Battery Park and the 9/11 Memorial on foot, then make my way back to Midtown. Next day hit up Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral and Times Square....rode the subway back from Times Square but could've easily walked since Penn Station was the very next stop. I've ridden the DC Metro and I love it but the New York Subway system has so much more history & character and yes, beauty than the drab, utilitarian DC Metro.

6:05..,Yeah, I REALLY miss good solid Deli out here in SoCal in the thirty years I’ve been out here…there are a Few places that are out here in San Diego, but they’re Still just not up to the authentic places that are ALL over the place in New York…

@edvaira6891 I agree, it’s very slim picking in San Diego County🙀, DZ Akins comes to mind, but it’s not even close to Sarge’s or Ross & Daughters, even very touristy Katz’s 👍

Love your videos. Moved here 4 years ago and can’t imagine living anywhere else. Also free video idea: Bushwick Brooklyn & Ridgewood Queens- two similar but also very different neighborhoods that make up part of the boarder between the boroughs. Lots to see in both!

Hey John. You and Sarah Funk are my favorite NYC creators. My mother is originally from Jackson Heights and my dad from Flatbush. My sister and I were born in Passaic as our parents were living in Clifton at the time. Most of my memories, of New York, were as a young kid in the early 1970’s. My parents moved to California in 1972. New York back in those days was much ‘dirtier’ but I still have great memories. I have visited New York many times, including most recently as September. I love the place as something about it just feels right to me. Will keep coming back as often as possible and really appreciate the great work you (and Sarah) do. Stay well! 😃

Almost 16 years on the UES (Yorkville) and now in Ft. Worth for four months. Now we have 1/4 acre with tons of trees. Four bedrooms, garage, hundreds of miles of park and pathways and close to TCU, so it feels like a college town, but... It is not NYC. Part of me will always be on E 85th. Some of my ashes will be at Carl Schurz Park.

Thank you brother for this info. I have been plagued by ADHD since I was a child and learning new things is one of the very few things that holds my attention. I would’ve liked your video earlier but I was driving to work when I listened. I thank you for teaching us about nyc, it’s one of my favorite subjects and I have learned so much from your channel on YT. It’s a long shot, but I was wondering if you could give info about Korean food/stores available in nyc, as it is my favorite kind of food in the whole world thus far (as an almost 30 year old) and I would be so excited to see what you find. Love you Jon and Adriana ❤️ from the armpit of oklahoma with love, Brookie Cookie 🤣

Moved to the USA in 1974 (I was 8 years old) and lived in Queens (Sunnyside) until 1977, at which time we moved to Staten Island. I hated Staten Island because I went to a rough school. However, my bedroom window looked right unto the Hudson River and the Manhatten skyline. Never got tired of that. Even at a relatively young age, I felt so lucky and amazed that I ended up moving from Eastern Europe, which at the time was behind the Iron curtain, to NYC, a place that most just dream of visiting (especially back in those days). I mean in 1973 I was going to an Eastern European school, where America (especially NYC) seemed as far away as Mars does today, to us. At that time I never thought I'd set foot in the USA, then, a year later, I was looking down the street from my new neighborhood in Sunnyside and could clearly see the World Trade Center and empire state building. (at least I think I remember seeing it). Anyway, when we moved to Staten Island in 1977, me and my friends would sometimes cut school and hang out at the Statue of Liberty or take the Ferry into the city. Saw my first adult live strip show and adult movie on 42nd street at around the age of 13. Yes, one place let us in. Those were the days when NYC, especially 42nd street were really sleazy, but the place had a nasty, yet intriguing character that you had to experience to appreciate. Eventually, we moved up to Westchester county (loved it there), and by that time I'd had enough of NYC and didn't miss it at all. I think in 20 years or so of living in Westchester I maybe went into NYC 4 times for different events. Now, at the age of 56, and living waaay upstate near Rochester, for some unknown reason, I have been super "homesick" for NYC and its surrounding areas. I'm dying for some real NYC pizza, which has no match, not even close anywhere else. And yes, those deli sandwiches are amazing. Even the best sandwich places around here are a joke compared to anywhere near NYC. I mean I literally laughed when I went to a highly regarded sandwich shop here and got something that was just a hair better and different than something from a Subway sandwich shop. I can't even find Boars Head anywhere around here. Don't get me wrong, I love the peace and quiet and safety of this area, but perhaps once NYC sneaks its way into your blood, at one time or another it starts to draw you back for some reason. Ok, I went a bit overboard with a long reply lol.

I am NYer and have been one all my 60 years. I grew up in Queens and lived there until 1989 when we moved out to Long Island. The city is only an hour away on the LIRR and the boroughs are an easy drive. My adult sons both went back into the city and live in Brooklyn. I have been all over the US and really enjoy traveling to other states. I only need to say two words and the locals say...NY. 😁 Being a NYer is part of my DNA. I love it here.

I moved here late 2018, the best decision ever made. New Yorkers are some of the kindest people, yes you'll experience rudeness but people are really kind. Coming from LA where they strive on facade. I learn to speak up, continue to be you. Be free, no one cares what you have, we all have to do the same thing. Be ready to cuss someone out or be cussed out.....lmao. New Yorkers will tell it how it is, straight facts no chaser. They really care about community and arts here. I can't even count how many free events I've been to, its amazing. NYC def likes to be extravagant in all ways and I love it. Never a dull moment when you leave your house. This city will piss you off and make you laugh at the same time. Also if you want it, you gotta go get it. Hardest workers are out here, hustling everyday making their dreams come true.
