It will evolve over time, but you need to invest time. 3 Make art for yourself, not to impress others, so mess around and have fun. 4 Milk other artists and learn from them. 5 Take non-art classes and learn about business and stuff like that. 6 Adopt an inspiration mindset. Get inspired by the world around you. 7 Follow artists online. Get inspired and learn from them. 8 Start self-promoting and again - learn from other artists and figure out why they are successful. 9 Be realistic and calm down. It is possible being a professional artist, but you need some knowledge. 10 Be confident and open for critique. Fear is holding you back. 11 Bonus: Be careful with your (expensive) equipment. "#1: Learn the basics" While I agree 100%, a pet peeve of mine is people who say this but fail to list what "the basics" are. Just for future reference. It isnt so obvious to most people on what the fundamentals are. Nice tips otherwise.

Omg this came just in the right time. I am in the art orientated class in my high school, and i had yesterday a huge mental breakdown because of the lack of selfconfidence and anxiety and the fear of the future. Personally i'd like to see more of these kind of contents because it helps a lot ❤

These tips are everything I needed to hear right now 🙌 one that I'd like to add is: you do not *need* expensive supplies as a beginner. Focus on your technique and enjoy messing around with cheap supplies, because fear of using the expensive ones will hold you back from practicing and using them altogether

It is actually pretty remarkable how much I listen and take to heart your words, Robin! You remind me a little of myself when I was a teenager. I was always coming up with brilliant insights that I hoped to remember for when I was older. I’m 36 now and it’s almost as if you have been passing along messages to me from my past self. Last year, you inspired me to pick up some acrylics and give painting a try. I enjoyed the learning process, and 24 hours later I had completed my first ever acrylic painting. (I had dabbled in watercolor in high school but not much.) Thank you for sharing your wisdom and personality with my son and I. He is a natural artist and we love watching your vids together. He watches mostly for your personality but I pause and repeat things he needs to hear about dedication, practice, hard work, creativity, but being hard on yourself, enjoying the process, learning and growing and experimenting without fear...etc Thanks for not exploiting our time too lol 💚

I think the cloud scene within the cloud scene is transcendent, usually i see that word as ethereal, but today it means two colors meant to contrast and go with each other like from a why you were called to be an artist :) ty for this video. I mentioned on IG that a more tutorial type video would go a long way with a lot of us, becaussse you are so quirky and funny and would make the humdrum of normal tutorials not happen. As is there are some great ones out there if people wonder, like Chuck Black, Katie Jobling, Michael James Smith. I notice you don't do tutorials in the strictest sense, so if you don't plan to don't be offended by my idea. I love your vids, and this one was a gem!

Your commentary is always so well thought out. I can tell you put just as much thought and care into your wording as you do your paintings. On video you are always so inspiring; students who work with you in person must be overwhelmed. Keep being you and thanks for all that you do for us!

Your words are so inspirational, Uv given me a different point of view and now I feel like I can conquer my fears as an artist and stop seeing my art as a hudge hurdle and start enjoying myself and my art, it's time to let loose and stop carrying a burden that is not even there.

I love your videos, I am 66, and am taking up painting, I have never studied art, but it is something I love. I am self taught. Thank You for sharing your advice and art.

I am 50. What i wish i knew 'then' that i know now is to be patient. Skill is learned along with natural talent. Do not be in a rush. In generations past Artist could take up to 20 years or longer for a single work. never be dissapointed with mistakes but turn it into something that compliments what you are doing to give the best work. Always pay attention to how much pigment is in the paint you use and how viscous the paint is. layering paints in thinner and lower pigment done in layers over time makes the most realistic work. Living Art Design is my fav. Especially studying Orchid growth habit and whether blooms hang or are upright. Using this you can create a space that is worthy of creating a painting. A lesson i learned from Rembrant. 'A Garden is a Beautiful Place to Paint'-Artist Brian Sheffield'.

I love the tip on confidence. I'm not a confident person in general but especially when it comes to art I have a lot of fear and am not confident in my abilities to create what I want to so therefore I dont create at all, however when I let go of that I do pride myself (in other areas and art) on being able to experiment and just have fun no matter the outcome. So from now on I shall start to place my confidence in that and become more productive, and see more improvement (and what does that mean? more confidence in my abilities! Yay!) Lastly, thank you so much for all your effort and hard work that goes into your videos, especially this one. It must be very frustrating but it goes to show you really want to help and show us the best.

I think water is really hard to create in any art form (drawing, painting, etc). But, Robin, you have really taken the time to study water over the years well enough that you're portrayal of water is so accurate and beautiful.

Great video, funny how tips for beginners are always so helpful for artists who are a little past that stage 😆 I think it's always beneficial to keep things in perspective and not become overconfident with your current way of working !

I began my artlife in school and was, from start, into the media and sharing everything on my pages. Now I am, like, 10% active as what I was before and really find this soo healthy. Feeling guilt because you have to maintain a community and all was so much more destructive for me than helpfull... I don't think it is a necessary step to become a successful artist.

I've been doing art seriously for about 4 years now and I'm always scared to use things from other people's styles and try new things because I'm scared people will think I'm copying them. Thanks for the great video! My favorite was "be realistic and calm down". I should probably write that one in big letters on my wall to remind myself! You had so much great advice here, especially the part about taking advantage of the community around you when you're in school. I second that bit of advice, I wish I had done that myself! I was only an art major for about half a semester before I started to have some problems with my vision. I sort of fell into despair and abandoned art for around a decade, I only re-discovered my joy in art last October, but so far it has definitely changed my life for the better! Thanks again for all of your amazing videos. :)

Every-time i watch your videos I get inspired to paint, you're so good! but its usually at night and im tired by then...😂the last time i finished a painting was in December!

The first tip really hits home for me. Art (particularly drawing) is something I'm interested in, but I'm certainly not 'an artist' yet (in the way where one is secure enough in one's experience and abilities to self-identify as one), and a lot of that is because I'm impatient with the basics. But the way you described "investing" in a craft with those basics sounds so much like what I already DID with music! I think I forget how often I rely on my foundation of knowledge when songwriting. Tonality, rhythm, historical significance, form, instrumentation... they're all things I learned about at school, and those lessons help shape my music to this day. (Not to mention, building my skill as a performer has made me a way better writer too!) You presented this particular piece of advice in a much more familiar and approachable way than I've heard it before. Thanks for helping me shift my perspective, so that going forward, hopefully I can apply that mentality of building a strong foundation to the visual arts too.

I have such a strange approach to art! When I was a little girl, I was constantly drawing and painting, almost every day, and happy with it, as children are. The older I got, the less I drew. When I became a teen, I tried again, but of course I had a higher expectation and wanted to draw portraits. Or, rather, wanted to draw one of my crush. I was even quite happy with it at the time. But one thing stayed with me since then. I hardly feel like drawing, inspiration only strikes every few years, and then of course perfectionism kicks in and I want to get the one thing that I want to draw a 100% right. Which of course doesn´t work. The pencil sketches I´m mostly even okay with, but as soon as I want to colour anything, I ruin it. I know nothing about the techniques, and watching videos can´t replace practice. The latest thing I wanted to try was watercolour because I thought, at least the pencil sketch will shine through, which is most important to me. Yeah, well, if only I had not used watercolour paper that has been sitting in my art box for 25 years, with me not knowing it was of really cheap quality so that it is even more difficult to use for a layman. Forget layering, every layer produces thick waterlines and they dry far too quickly. Colouring a portrait with that will end up in a mess. I will not draw the sketch again on another sheet because I will never be happy with another try (I did try though) because I wont´s get it right again. Aaargh! I think I should stop it altogether or visit an art class, but depression keeps me from it. All in all it brings so much frustration instead of joy :(. At least as much frustration as joy, I should say. But watching your videos is really uplifting because you spread such a good mood :D!

I'm 15 years old and of course I still have awhile to decide what career I want to go down but, every time I get nervous cause I have no idea what I want to achieve. I'm a really good artist however, but I was always afraid I couldn't make a career out of art so I was still on the road of pondering about my future. Some people suggested I become a tattoo artist, an art teacher or simply just an artist but I don't know what's good for me, I wanna be everything but I'm so limited and I feel by those limitations I'm more prone to mess up... again I'm only young and I have awhile to decide, but I don't know how to get in the art industry and create a career out of it, so I'm lost
