I have never worn items with logos - simply because I don't want to walk around with someone else's name on me. Bottega Veneta handbags have never advertised the brand. My one and only black handbag came from them 25 years ago. I've just realised today that its shape is now trendy 😅

Exactly! I've always said that very same thing. I even make car dealers remove the license plate frame with their name when I purchase a vehicle. I tell them if I drive around with that on, I'll need to send them a monthly invoice for advertisement. @@katesleuth1156

They actually used to run an ad in the US that said "when your own name is enough" It had a very small stamp at the bottom that said Bottega Veneta. I found one of their small backpack purses in a vintage shop ages ago.

My mother was a fine seamstress. She was fanatic about the pattern on material matching at the seams. No one seems to care now. But I still can't buy clothes with uneven plaids or stripes. Mom always said it was a sign of poor quality.

I've always held to quality over quantity. Owning more means more to take care of.Frugality is not the same as being cheap. I finally found a shade of green (deep forest) that looks great on me, that doesn't turn my olive complexion green. It is now part of my year round capsule. I am glad to see certain styles that I always preferred, like pleated pants making a comeback. I never wore skinny jeans.

I will wear ripped jeans until die 😊 Only the ones ripped at the knees and if I rip the jeans myself. I won’t buy jeans with rips already in them. I have a personal reason as to why I love ripped at the knee jeans that I won’t get into here. I know once I get over 50 I probably shouldn’t wear them, but I’m have always looked younger than I really am 🥳 Ironically though, I hate raw hem jeans. I feel like with the price of jeans these days, companies should finish the garment.

Truth to be told I am still wearing pieces I bought 15 years ago. I always look for good fabrics, meticulously tailored and sewn. Most of them I bought at the end of the season. I don‘t have any favourite brands. It totally depends on what I am going to detect on my hunt. Whenever there is nothing peaking my interest, I call it a day. My only soft spot are white shirts. I have to remind me that I already have way too many, that and indigo blue linen shirts (my favourite during summer).

Learning from you the importance of French Chic principles as strong foundations is priceless, Marie-Anne. I never liked ripped jeans or distressed, shapeless clothing. Anything frumpy, poor quality, ridiculous looking and big logos are a non for me. I agree with you about logos: I own a vintage gold Moncler ski jacket, a brand popular with skiiers on the sloped & apres-ski. The name is written in black thread on the inside jacket bottom. Despite multi-Gold medal winner, Jean-Claude Killy as brand ambassador, the company went bankrupt, and Giambattista Valli bought it & placed two skis & poles in an X shape on the left sleeve arm. The brand had a low profile, known originally only to skiers, but it's an Italian industry tradition to slap big, fat labels in merchandise. This has spilled over into Chanel & YSL, who now display their labels more prominently. I have a vintage Chanel bag on which you can barely see the sewn-on logo & a vintage YSL which requires good eyesight to see the tiny initials on the buckle. Once a company starts visibly emphasizing a logo, all other designers follow. I have a tendency to buy fill-in items from Zadig & Voltaire, Sandro, Chloe, J.Crew, Talbot's, Banana Republic to update outfits with blazers, trousers/skirts, cords/jeans, etc. I don't like to part with anything because the quality of decades ago cannot be matched. That's why I have a good tailor who tells me honestly what can or can't be fixed. If it can't be fixed, it goes to the back of the closet until I decide what to do. I love my clothes & can't part with them. I take exceptional care of them--that's why they always look brand new.

Proportion has much to do with looking youthful or frumpy. I'm only 5 ft 6 ( 167 cm) and have short plump legs. As a result, any skirt/ dress that is calf-length or ankle length makes me look like an old frumpy woman who is heading off to church. I look stumpy and wider, no matter the style of the skirt. However, wearing skirts that are just below the knee in length gives me the illusion of longer legs, thinner legs, and a thinner body.

I will buy into trends (assuming they fit my style or personality, of course) but depending on what it is (is it something I will likely only use or like a season or two?) I will find a budget way to get it (from thrifting or a big box/cheaper store/amazon/etc) or incorporate it in a small way through smaller, more affordable accessories. I find my fall/winter style and spring/summer styles are very different. Fall and winter much more classic and more neutral based. Spring and summer brighter and more 'fun'. My friends always joke I have two totally different wardrobes and 2 totally different personalities for the seasons LOL But all of them are of good quality.

This is so true. On my last trip to the very high quality second hand store, I got two items that were not simple or classic, though the colors really were flattering. Guess which ones I haven't worn yet? Another important element is that the fit is comfortable and the fabric does not itch. You can have an item that is a tad large tailored, but there's nothing you can do about cheap scratchy fabric!

My first pet hate is blouses and shirts that gape at the front. They just don’t fit properly, even if I resort to safety pins. My second pet hate is mismatched patterns - they make anything look like it is very poor quality. Put the two together and the result is really cheap-looking, definitely not good. I do like the idea you mentioned, of a nod to fashion with a small accessory. I would love a certain pair of silver shoes, but they are expensive and I have a feeling that, this time next year, they will be “so last year, darling”. A silver bag would look good, though - hmm, decisions, decisions. 🤔

Never been able to understand why handbags that advertise the manufacturer, even if it’s Hermes or Chanel, for example, are things that women want to wear. The idea of being even a “discrete” billboard doesn’t have much appeal for me and when those handbags are very, very costly it’s like bragging to the world that you are rich: just an invitation for someone to rip you off.

My favorite part,of this terrific video, was the end, about keeping fashion Simple, without a lot of Extras. Yes,clothing with too much added, 'fadish' detailing(In my opinion)does not look good on anyone! It is just in bad taste. Its targeted buyers are those that like what is considered New,and Trendy. It might even be a favorite part of the person's wardrobe, but that style has very limited wearability.

Many many moons ago (sometime in the 1970s) when I was a teenager I found a book in my local library by a fashion editor from one of the large UK papers - this was in an NZ library - which I think is called Dressing for Success by Jean Rook. She gave much the same advice as you do (even if the suggestions and images are well out of date fashions having changed much in the intervening 50 years or so) and her advice is as good today as it was when she wrote the book in the late 1960s. I still have a copy and it is my ''go to'' when it comes to advice on what to, or not to, buy. I will be adding your book to it on my bookshelf as I suspect both will be invaluable together.

I quit doing trends a long time ago. I mix period clothes with contemporary clothes and most all my clothes are black. I have no desire to stop being a middle aged Goth. My style is termed as nerdy or geeky goth as I tend to go for ordinary clothes. I do have a few over sized blazers but not too much so. My weight fluctuates a bit so I'm covered, no matter what.

I recently moved to a new state and I'm staying with my son's family. I thought it would be short-term and put all my warm weather clothing in storage. Now that it's getting warmer, I can't get to my clothing (the movers put my 'wardrobe' box in the back corner with heavy furniture around it even though I asked them not to). I went to the thrift store with your recommendations in my head and found some really good quality (mostly Talbots) things! White jeans, classic tops and all in basic colors. I may go back for the white trousers as well. I spent $100 and now have 5 outfits to cycle through the season. I also stayed away from the 'capris' that cut off your leg! :-) Thanks Marie Anne for your advice.

Great advice! I buy less of everything since I’m working from home. I used to buy A LOT (quality clothes) when I worked in an office and I am still selling my clothes on premium second hand shops. Luckily I invested in good, classic pieces that can be sold after years. My advice would be to buy the best one can afford, because fast fashion doesn’t have a second hand market - that is, provided it doesn’t fall to pieces after a couple of washing 😉 PS and in any case, avoid trends… last year’s trends are this year unwearable 😊

Hello Marie Anne! Thank you so much as always! Your videos help underline what I am doing thanks to you, and also some course corrections if I have departed from your great guidance. Funny story: I have a very nice Ralph Lauren sleeveless jacket that I don’t wear because it has a BIG embroidered logo. Why did I buy it? Because I liked everything else about it. But that logo makes it a NON! In the process of trying to take it off… not easy!

I'm petite and I found a French made trench coat in a thrift shop last year. But it's not your typical trench. The front is very simple but the back has beautiful detailing of pleats and buttons below the waist. It is maxi length and can't be shortened because of that detail but I wear it anyway. I don't feel it overwhelms me because it is so simple and I wear long skirts a lot of the time so it looks better. I'm actually not so petite as short.

It could be because your coloring has softened, and you instinctively soften the colors in your wardrobe to suit. Most women lose brightness of color in their hair and skin, and sometimes even in their eyes, even before their hair goes gray. There's a woman who does youtube videos who was an intense Autumn when she was young, and now she finds that the bright oranges and rusts that suited her then don't look good on her any more. She's going through a learning curve to find out what she looks good in now. Most of us find that we need to adjust our color palette as we age, so it's totally normal.

Separate them. White or black top for the pants, could be dramatic in style. Or depending on the shade of the pants perhaps a lighter tone of the same shade? Shirt could be underneath another shirt, black, white, navy with matching pants or the over shirt to a matched outfit.
