Love my 2020 SR5 Premium 4Runner! I am glad you reviewed a stock one, all the reviews on KZfaq are TRD Pros, Off Road, etc. Not a knock on those reviews, but the base SR5 is VERY capable!

4runner all the way! I also like all the things you mentioned and then some. Me too never get tired of looking at it just parked on my driveway . I also love the comfortable ride on the highway, it's so smooth that I can't tell that am doing 140 kms /hr unless I look at the gauge. Proud owner of a 2018 SR5 premium here.

It’s super comfortable! Makes me jealous when I ride in it. It’s much more comfortable than my Jeep.

The SR5 is an absolute bargain compared to the alternatives. Toyota should offer a manual transmission for purists just as they do with the Tacoma.

I just bought a 2024 SR5 4Runner,, I owned two Tacoma’s both third gen’s and I have to say that both vehicles are very similar BUT,, the 4Runner is built with a little more quality and fit and finish than the Tacoma,I absolutely loved my tacos but needed a little more in the line of comfort and definitely found it in my new 4Runner👍👍.

Totaled my 2014 4R Trail unfortunately this October. Insurance gave over 22k for it. Holding value!👍🏻 Couldn’t get to a Toyota dealership fast enough to buy another. Bought a 2021 TRD Off Road premium, love it!

As you pretty much said the 4Runner is really a well sorted and amazingly versatile package right out of the box. I have a 5th gen off-road along with a modified '98 TJ...absolutely love both. The TJ has character in spades (for people who like that lol) and the 4Runner is like a loyal, well mannered Golden Retriever... always pleasant and very capable. I do think that for the money (as it stands now) the 4Runner even without all the bells and whistles represents a better value to dollar ratio over the competition...mpg be damned it's one of the most proven powertrains on the market and as you mentioned the mods are out there. For anyone looking for a low fuss, long-term ownership experience it's an excellent choice. Favorite 4Runner specific thing is the rear window...put it halfway down while parked taking a call or eating lunch and along with having the moonroof open you have good ventilation that doesn't encourage passerbys to engage in unwanted conversation or possibly reach in an open a door...NICE!!!

Great summary. I immediately upgraded the tires on mine to the Nokian Outpost AT tires in stock size (nice and light: only 30 lbs) and like yourself I may install sliders, but they are the only mods I intend to do. It's so capable out of the box.

Great review. Maybe a slightly newer Runner in the future too. 1997 4Runner SR5, one year owner. 235k miles. I love the truck’s ability to drive so nicely being old and high miles. All stock. Consistently achieving 19 mpg. It just goes in rough places, namely the last mile to our home. A foot of snow, truck loaded down, and it just churned and climbed all the way up. Had chains on cause tires are all season, but at 1500 rpms it just climbed with confidence.

I own a Jeep Wrangler. And I love my jeep for all kinds of reasons. But I also really love Toyota especially the Tacoma‘s in the forerunners. They’re so cool looking and definitely most definitely capable. My neighbor has a forerunner and we off-road all the time together. Toyotas are awesome

Did you look at the Lexus gx "Toyota prado" they are very capable off road and they are 8 seaters. Very comfortable inside they are basically a mini Landcruiser. They share the same chassis and running gear.

I didn't know anything about the Lexus GX at the time I was buying the 4Runner so it wasn't on my radar at all. Everything I have learned about it since then makes me think it is an awesome option. I really like that it has a V8 and a more comfortable interior.

Have you changed your rear Diff vent? Driving through that much water on video scenes will contaminate the rear end without a different vent setup.

Why is the power transmission of my SURF/4Runnner a bit late to start driving after braking? Is that due to its age or it's the nature of the car? It's a 1997 model. Thanks!

Have you ever got into a situation where the lack off crawling option or locking diff was a problem? I'm asking this because I am looking forward getting one, I need the 3rd sitting row, but I know that the SR5 doesn't come fully loaded with all the off road goodies that the TRD models offer.
@mikeoldham
@mikeoldham 4 жыл бұрын
There have been times I wished I'd had a locker, but not enough to convince me to upgrade yet. We mostly drive reasonably mild trails so I haven't been too worried about it, but if I run into the problem more often I will look into getting an aftermarket rear locker. It seems easier/safer to add an aftermarket locker into an SR5, than to add a jump seat into one of the TRD models. I have never used crawl control, and most of what I've read about it is that it is kinda neat, but most people don't use it very often. I don't miss it, but again I don't know what I'm missing. If you often drive much more technical stuff than we do then I can see the locker being more important. There have been a few times when we've been on a super mucky road and I needed help. A locker may have helped in those situations, but it may not have either. And I can't say for sure since I didn't have anything to compare with. And honestly it's been about once a year when I felt like I needed help, and Jared was there to help me so it never ended up being an issue. I hope this helps.

@@mikeoldham Thanks for you answer! I guess that upgrading the suspension and getting better all terrains can compensate a big part of what it misses.

I have a SR5 Premium with the three row seats. You will have a button called A-TRAC. You can find many videos on KZfaq of how this feature acts as a locker for both front and rear.
@p.k.808
@p.k.808 3 жыл бұрын
The sr5 is extremely capable. Rarely would you ever use a locker. The 4x4 system in a sr5 can do it all.

Why not get the off-road version which has all the off-road goodies and then get the Toyota body shop to install a seat? You can buy the seat and hardware to install the seat from the Toyota catalog
@mikeoldham
@mikeoldham 4 жыл бұрын
That is an option. I know the third row versions have side airbags which would be missing on the off road version. I can get aftermarket lockers on the sr5, I just wish you could get both the off road goodies and the third seat from the factory.

Hi, As you said SR5 good for off road but does it have kdss?
@mikeoldham
@mikeoldham 3 жыл бұрын
No it doesn’t have KDSS. I will never claim that the SR5 is better off-road than the TRD models, they have more off-road features that do help. But I do think it is good enough 90% of the time for 90% of the people who buy a 4Runner.
