I was lucky enough to watch this in the theatres and yes I didn't know what to think of it either. The main reason for watching it was because bowling was involved and at the time I was really into bowling. It wasn't until it was on DVD that me and my friends watched it again and became obsessed with it. It really is a masterpiece!

That scene when the dude sees that pervy rich guy scribble something down on a pad then leaves the room letting the dude run over to make a carbon copy is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen. It gets me every time, just the perfect gag and so well set up, pulls you in, then reminds you what movie your watching.

I think that scene with 'The Drink', the 'That's a pretty decent f*cking kitty right-there!' & 'Rae-kens', 'Jalap-Peno chips' & 'BLUE-IAN' & 'The Sh*t-hawk Speech' are ALL Golden Moments in Cinema Comedy History. I got to see The Crew (Boys, Lahey & Randy) before Lahey passed on at the Cleveland Ohio (Traveled from Columbus) 'Dear Santa-Jesus-God, GO F*** YOURSELF Winter World Tour'. It was magical, seeing a Sold-Out crowd in this GIANT, FANCY, GUILDED ANGELS WITH VIEWING BOXES for Operas & World Class Musicians now having The Crew doing Imrov with a Running-Story about X-Mas for 2 hours. Everyone was drunk 90% of the Crowd, the Bouncers were having to help people to the bathroom & from standing & weaving on the railings. & At the end, when Bubbles played his Acoustic version of Liquor & Whores EVERYONE got their phones, lighters, & Vape pens out & the WHOLE DAMN PLACE smelled like a Burning Skunk f***ed a burning Tire at the end & LIT THAT PLACE UP during the Finale.

You forgot the best fact about this film’s directors. The Cohen Brothers, who don’t give many in-depth interviews, were offered to be a feature piece in a carpet magazine for carpeting professionals. Since the carpet was so important the film the magazine thought what do they have to lose? So they gave one their most candid interviews to a carpet magazine. It’s so freaking good!

Yes, it's *all* of those things and more. The Big Lebowski is a mirror-laden chameleon. Intelligent people will see it as philosophical and deep-----while the more common folk will see it as an inconsequential, shallow and straight forward comedy. Whether it be your fluctuating mood or your permanent personality-----these are all factors that lead to the differing experience that people have in watching The Big Lebowski. If you watch it while in a docile and peaceful mood, you'll pick up on things that a bad mood would otherwise miss (and vise versa). This movie really is an anomaly. It's lightning in a bottle. It cannot be reproduced.

All the women are smart, powerful or manipulating men. In short the men are useless except for their sperm. Watched the movie in the theater spring break 1998. I remember walking out if the (mostly empty) cinema perplexed and amused, letting it sink in. We honestly didn't know what just happened to us, and whether or not that was a good thing. We debated and analyzed, we were film students after all, some dismissing it altogether. None of us could have predicted the cultural impact of the film.

Not sure how this fits into the timeline of movie releases exactly, but... In the Big Lebowski, Bunny ran away from her family farm outside of Moorhead MN. Moorhead happens to be just across the Red River from Fargo ND. You can literally play catch with someone in the other city even though you are in different states, they are that close. It would be interesting to find out if the reference to Moorhead was added after making the film Fargo as a hidden throwback to their other movie.

The Raymond Chandler storytelling approach is the one I would always favour over any other! Actually, I think everyone into the art of movies should be forced to read Chandlers Marlowe novels, and, in addition, study the aspects on the protagonists evolution over the years. Doing that is of highest importance to have one understand the importance of the rhythm and music of dialogue, or even monologue, as proven by the off-narrative monologues of Marlowe, or, for instance, Sterling Haydens monologue in Dr Strangelove. These views are underlined heavily by the works of Shakespeare, Orson Welles, Michael Curtiz, Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Zemeckis, and many more. All of the works by the above are only remembered and referred to as being classics due to what is said. If one is not able to remember any dialogue/monologue of a certain movie, it will never be referred to as being a true classic. And this even includes the silent years, when dialogue was delivered via text panels.

Here’s a little known “Big Lebowski “ trivia. The woman who sacrificed her toe so that the nihilists could convince Jeff Lebowski that they had “kidnapped” Bunny was Aimee Mann. She was the singer for the 80’s band Til Tuesday who had a big hit in the 80’s with their song “Voices Carry”. She briefly cameos at the end of the movie sitting with the nihilists at a restaurant

This movie was a hidden gem. I don't even know when it was released in theaters but it was a cult classic on home video. Same with Boondock Saints. Great movies that should have gotten more love in the theaters if they were known about.

I saw this in a theatre during it's initial run, there was so much laughter from the audience that I had to watch again just to see the jokes I missed during the laughing...definitely one of my top 5 movies.

This movie really found it's audience on home video, I remember renting this movie and watching it at least 3 times in one night before i had to take it back the next day. Like you said it leaves you wondering, wondering what did I just watch ? Rewind it an play it again lol. Thats how people fell in love with it, through mutiple viewing.
