He is a "living, breathing" character, whereas his daughters aren't even fleshed out enough to have visible faces. Even the conversation they're having is a little off and sounds almost nonsensical. Then there's the background extras. Nobody is moving, except one waiter (which I'm guessing was a mistake, since no one else really does). I thought the part where Tom Cruise realizes the girl he (spoiler alert) smothered to death was the wrong girl was terrifying, especially with the music score

I resonated this movie when I was in high school. I couldn’t quite understand but it captivated a part of me . I watch it now at 40 and I cry like a baby at the end. I understand it on a soul level now.. but I don’t have the words for such a feeling it gives me. Its like remembering something you forgot so long ago

14:45 how is the ending a confusing puzzle? the tech support guy literally explains everything that happened in the elevator on the way up to the roof. and in the scene before that, even the details of the cryogenic hibernation process and lucid dream program are explained in the meeting with the red headed woman. everything is explained so i don't know what you're confused about lol

I missed it in the theater, so I was eager to add it to my Netflix queue. When I found out it was a remake of Open Your Eyes I was eager to see the original version first. It's fascinating to watch Penelope Cruz play the same role in both films. And watching the original version first, made the American remake more coherent.

I really enjoyed Vanilla Sky. I never really thought it was that ambiguous though. I always took it literally especially since during the time it was released the idea that you could freeze your body and be awoken in the future was quite popular.

It's funny how David Lynch can make insane movies that are open to interpretation and everyone praises him, but you make one movie with Tom Cruise that's a little similar and people are calling it confusing and bad. Also, didn't the director of Total Recall confirm it was, in fact, all a dream?
@KRAFTWERK2K64 жыл бұрын
Actually i always hear a lot of different reactions about David Lynch movies. Like so many don't get them and really don't like it. I too don't like everything from (especially Mulholland Drive.. that one sucked soo much) but i like most of his stuff.
@LnPPersonified4 жыл бұрын
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 I just mean one director makes confusing movies and gets awards and critical acclaim for it, and the other gets shit on. It's just weird to me. I love me some David Lynch. Lost Highway is my favorite.

Agreed I can understand why people dont like Mullholland Drive with Lynch I find its alot to do with the mood of the film. I dont gel with Lost Highway but its a personal thing. I certainly dont thinks its badly made. But Lynch doesnt make simple entertainment and theres nothing wrong with a crowd pleaser but he makes films like paintings. I think Crowe was trying to do the same with Vanilla sky

I know you get request all the time but if you’ve never seen the Bruce Willis movie Hudson Hawk it’s amazing. A crazy cult classic if there ever was one that if you boil it down is all about a cat burglar who gets out of jail and just wants a cup of cappuccino. Of course lots of other craziness happens. I would so love to see you find 10 wonderful things out about this movie and how / why it happened. Only you could do it the justice it deserves. 🙏

I remember watching this in the theater shortly after it’s release. Its hard to describe, but I felt hauntingly numb for weeks afterward. Could not stop thinking about the characters, the story, and especially the music. Oh the music...kept all those emotions swirling inside me for so long. Even now when I put in the cd, or just hearing those slow guitar parts in this Minty video gives me goose bumps and makes me stop what I’m doing. I love this movie, but I cannot watch it very often...especially when alone. Thanks for reviewing this emotionally charged film which I love...for different reasons.

Vanilla Sky is a bold masterpiece. It's not a film meant for everyone but if you want « to exist » while watching a movie: it's for you. As a spectator, you're part of the conversation because it's open to interpretation. It's a very emotionnal film that deals with death, love, ambition and self-doubt. Minty, I loved what you've done here and I agree with the flaws you pointed out. Also, this film is a fine example of a great adaptation by Hollywood of a « foreign » film...Which they rarely get right. But this time, it works very well with a different tone but on that is as impactful as the original.

Great review. Unfortunately, due to many head injuries and a problem with my inner-ear, I cannot stomach fast-moving, 360 camera shots, roller coasters, or psychedelic images on the screen. So, I will be passing this one up. And my life would be one long Chicago album.

This is one of those movies I have to watch every so often. It’s only at the very end of the movie that I’m reminded why I love it so much and leaves me feeling proud to have discovered it and to be one of the few that actually understood it. Easily one of the best most underrated movie of our times and I’m perfectly fine with it too as it does not impact how this movie makes me feel overall.

I loved Vanilla Sky. One of my favorite movies ever. Cameron Crowe movies hit me a certain way in general. His musical influence in his films is pretty special, from Jerry Maguier, Elizabethtown, Vanilla Sky obviously, even We Bought a Zoo. I actually made a song influenced by this movie using the same title Vanilla Sky - Real1muzik. The song is about relationships, as was this movie and the complications within them. The feel of the song was influenced by the Radiohead song featured in the movie Everything in its Right Place. I never made a video for it but always imagined referencing the dance club scene, where David is getting shit-faced after the realization his dream girl is no longer interested in him. Funny that the girl David lost interest in was Brian's dream girl. David lost interest in Julianna, and Sofia lost interest in David. Without the bitters, the sweets aren't as sweet.

This is what I know I was dating my now husband who worked at a movie theater while this picture was showing. Vanilla Sky is fantastic. Not a pretentious mess, just meant for those who can and wish to experience this deep melancholy. It premise is just like Silent Hill but without the physical monsters. Purgatory or limbo for lost souls.
