In 1987 I got an abscess in my mouth and had to have surgery for it in Charlotte, N.C. I was in the children's wing at the time (I was 7) and Varney came in to see all the kids and I still have a polaroid to this day of me with him. Apparently he did that all the time at random. Absolute sweetheart of a human being. When he passed I was genuinely upset about it.

German here. THIS was the first Ernest movie i ever watched as a kid and it's still my most favorite one. Mostly because it really feels like the perfect incarnation of the Ernest P. Worrell Character. It's silly but also has the right amount of serious tones, drama and really really good acting. I remember watching this movie for the first time on Christmas eve on TV and i was blown away. The Story was awesome and it really felt like a pretty expensive production where everyone gave their best to deliver this amazing movie. My father never understood why i liked the Ernest movies so much x3 And somehow it seems the Ernest movies were never all that huge here in Germany than in the US and the rest of the world.

I believe he knew how much he meant to so many of us in that time period. He had has own charity called wish upon a star (like make a wish) and a popular wish from kids of both organizations was to meet "Ernest". He would invite them to the set (if they were able) and spend time with them or if they were in the hospital he would come and visit with them if he was able.

Some may not know that this was not the only Christmas movie that Varney did. He also voiced a character in the animated movie "Annabelle's Wish". The story is about a calf who yearns to be one of Santa's reindeer. Varney plays one of the two characters presented as antagonists in the film, however in the end neither is really a villain as you come to understand why they acted the way they did. It's a very sweet tale filled with love, sadness, and sacrifice. It may be geared towards children, but adults can enjoy it too. It wasn't until after I had watched it as an adult that I realized how rich the somewhat simple story is.

I've never understood why this one didn't get a Blu-ray release. It was the first Ernest movie I saw in the theater, and I still think it's one of his best features. Jim Varney was a one of a kind comic talent, and while he had Disney money behind him, the movies were quality family entertainment. The post-Touchstone releases are generally painful, as they had to lean into the cheapness, but even there, Jim elevated the paltry material.
