Hi Wido. Fantastic video. FYI. Most phones now a days do not block IR. Easy way to check is by recording/snapping a photo while pressing your TV remote facing the lens. If you can see the light from the remote on your camera then IR is not blocked. I read it on Cloudynights about 2 years ago when i astro modded my DSLR. Mind blowing i know:) At least it does not block the wavelength used in IR transmitters that exist within day to day electronics. how much IR comes through from distant objects i cannot say. Another mention is to your pixel scale. Explained perfectly. however i think guys that are new to the hobby should know that shorter focal lengths are less effected by over sampling. Like a asi294mc pro on an 80mm with a focal length of 400mm. Obviously this goes into the category of wide field. Keep the fantastic content flowing. You are a massive influence to this hobby

Most DSLR or CLS do not cool the sensor but those more oriented towards video have heat sinks that are rather effective. Most will shoot video for short clips - and then there are those that can shoot video for hours without tingeing magenta.

Hi Waldo, I appreciate what you are teaching in this video and think that's fantastic! However; I would like to point out some things you could have said, especially for people who have low astrophotography budgets. #1. You can take some pretty cool pictures of DSO's with planetary cameras like my ZWO ASI 120 MC-S. I've captured images of stars and open star clusters with it, and bright nebulas like Orion Nebula with mine. #2. You don't necessarily HAVE TO have a telescope with an EQ mount. Of course those types of mounts are awesome; and when you have the $ to afford to get a motorized mount, it will greatly improve the quality of your images, but it's not necessarily a must. #3. You don't have to have telescopes with large aperture or long focal length. I've taken some pretty cool pics of the Pleiades and Beehive Clusters using a Celestron "Travel Scope" 70 x 400 mm! This compact scope sits on a flimsy Alt/AZ mount and poor excuse for a tripod, and yet; if you figure out how to find objects it works just fine. I was able to find 13 Messier objects, eight (8) in the constellation of Sagittarius (which sits in the middle of the Milky Way galaxy in the summertime) including M-6, M-8 (star cluster located in the center of the "Lagoon Nebula") and several others. All with this small "kids toy." Yes you can have lots of "hot pixels" in your images, but some good post processing (using darks and flats) will get rid of a lot of them, and other apps like GIMP and Pixinsight, etc.... can also help eliminate "noise" and create some nice photos. The quality of these pictures increases if you can upgrade to a scope and mount that is motorized and computerized and something like my Celestron Nexstar 4SE can be used in ALT/AZ mount and capture open clusters, and the computerized "go to" feature after doing a three star alignment, can make finding objects a lot easier, and short 2 to 5 sec exposures (stacking just a few images) can bring out more stars in these open clusters. Like so many "youtubers"; your video applies mostly to those who can afford $5,000 to $10,000 worth of equipment. For those of us with lower budgets, something needs to be said. We are NOT all a lost cause!

Good overview. In fact your 10th question has me checking my set up. With my current camera, the ASI78MC I have a tiny pixel size of 2.40um which results in a 0.35 arc-seconds per pixel resolution (C8 EdgeHD with reducer for about 1400mm focal length). So that’s way over-sampled and the reason why stars are bloated I think. I’m thinking of getting the ASI533MC Cooled. But even that has 3.76 um pixels and results in 0.55 arc-seconds/pixel resolution. Perhaps 2x2 binning would help as this would effectively double the camera pixel size (and double the angular resolution). What do you think?
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, 2x2 binning or reducers are the way to go. Happy newyear Martyn!
@Astrofrank
@Astrofrank 2 жыл бұрын
Binning would make the images brighter or reduce exposure time, but bloated stars can be reduced by simply reducing the size of the image by 50% (binning does, somehow, the same).

I want to take pics of the planets and moon. I need a 2000mm focal length (or longer) telescope? Will I also need to buy an observatory to put that in, and where can I find a good one that's cheap? Thanks, GREAT VIDEO
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace Жыл бұрын
You don't need an observatory Mark. If you're just into planetary imaging, I would look for a second hand schmidt cassegrain telescope on a goto mount. You could also go for a dobsonian.

Great video, thanks! I'm planning to buy a camera but, my telescope is a Meade ETX125 1900mm focal length. So, based on the rule you explain (pixel size/focal length *206,265), I don't know how to avoid the issue of oversampling, because the max pixel size in ZWO camerasis 9 µm, and even this high value (usually not recommended) result in a value below 1. What camera will match better with my telescope? Thanks
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace Жыл бұрын
Hi Juan, your etx125 is a maksutov telescope and therefore good for the moon and planets. For solar system objects you can start with a color camera like the asi678mc. It's affordable and you can magnify the planets quite nicely. With planets you can image at around .2, Cheers.
@juanmanuelsoaresdelima5039
@juanmanuelsoaresdelima5039 Жыл бұрын
@@AstroForumSpace I was thinking in this camera precisely! But (2/1900*206,265)=0,22 what is a very low value. Multiplied by 3840/3600 equals 0,23 arcseconda!

Totally off topic Wido but I assume you're using some kind of teleprompter? Can you tell me what and how? The reason I ask is that, if you are, then your placement of whatever you're using is excellent because it is difficult to discern unless you are looking for it.

Im trying to get the right gear and of course I’m starting with the mount. I’m struggling with deciding on one of these 3 mounts to be my first. If you could pick just one. Which would you pick? Thanks for helping me with your awesome videos!

@@AstroForumSpace awesome I own one and I am beginning to build my astrophotography rig. It’s a slow build but I have decided to get the mount first. I’m going with the heq 5. I’ll combine that with the slt 102 to start because it’s the only telescope I have that would work. My only other telescope is a 12 inch dob. What do you think about this set up for a beginner? Thanks!

Hi Wido. Another Great Video. I have a QHY 268C and I get a 0.55 arc second using my 8" Edge HD with the 70% reducer. Not exactly what I like. But the stars don't appear to be getting to bloated. But I will pay more attention now. I'm looking into another camera that has a larger pixel size. But they are running close to $4K USD. Ouch! When using my Hyperstar, I get 1.99 Arc Seconds. So from one extreme to the next. But the images with my Hyperstar are excellent. It's almost like cheating with the Hyperstar. ;o)
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, I'm also imaging at 0.55 with a similar setup, and actually it does give you rather nice results. What I've also tried is capturing images at 2x2 binning so that you can get to 1.1 arcsec per pixel. Do you experience any elongation of stars of loss of light towards the edge of your picture with the 268C with the edge HD? And I assume your 268 works well in combination with your hyperstar? Clear skies!
@brod5352
@brod5352 2 жыл бұрын
@@AstroForumSpace I'll have to give it a try again and see if it does elongate the stars. My issue with 2x2 is you lose your RGB. I always wondered why NINA wasn't debayering the image. I've been told it's just a luminance image only.

I'm still trying to understand eyepiece cameras as I recently got one with a 2mp sony sensor which is great at the planets but not so good at fitting in star clusters iv found that using a 2mp camera is around around the same as using 3/3.5mm eyepiece so even in my 400mm length telescope im still well over 100x wich is very annoying and I could use a reducer but then the focal length would be very short wich is also not the best thing 🤷‍♂️ I have a dslr but then that isn't the best because of the problems u mentioned but I can fit it the hole thing in and a lot more 🤣 and getting a higher pixel camera have their problems too with the tracking so what sort of pixel camera is a really the good all rounder 8mp 🤷‍♂️ or more if I keep going the way I am il have 10 cameras 🤣 just want to know what would think 🤔

Hi there. I'm not sure what your question is. A T2 ring (or similar) should be enough to attach your camera to any refractor telescope.

I have never tried but am wondering if Anyone has used the slow motion feature on an iPhone to capture more fps in the same time? (60 fps vs 240fps). It could essentially quadruple your efforts of capture data on planetary imaging in the same amount of time. Not that an iPhone will render the best images, more just curiosity.

Definitely doable with a good adapter. The issue may be the output format... smartphones may compress videos to an mpeg format instead of avi/ser with a dedicated astrocamera and capturing software, but it's definitely possible.
