Today I bring you 10 things you need to know about Portugal before you make the move. Some are great, some things to consider. Overall, we love this country very much (that's why we moved here!).

New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands a little over a year ago, and moved south in our old campervan. Last year we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. Slowly we are cleaning the land and building our dream off-grid homestead from the ground up. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

A very accurate summary , we moved here to near Silver coast (Rio Maior area) from UK nearly 3 years ago and have found the local people very helpful and kind, the climate is great although a little cooler in winter at times than we expected. We have no regrets about coming to live in this friendly, safe and welcoming country. We love it here.

I am 70yo and retired to central Portugal 2 years ago and can honestly say it was the right decision :) I love the people, the history and culture, the fresh food, cafes, transport system and so much more. Of course there are differences to other EU nations in the north but that is part of living in another nation and culture and if you don't do your own homework on a country before moving there then...... ! So, welcome to PT, I hope you enjoy a healthy, happy life here :)

One thing you have sort of mentioned - the Portuguese people make you feel welcome - they also are almost all able to speak English pretty well and never seem to mind chatting. Yep, I agree with the comments below - greet in Portuguese and say thanks too! The people really enjoy and appreciate the fact when you try!

Hi there, just found your channel and vids and ill probably become a subscriber. Im a portuguese expat living in Spain and have always found interesting to learn about how foreigners perceived us. Im very happy that you seem to be having a nice experience living in Portugal (although not clear from the video whereabouts you're located). Couldn't help but smiling at some of your comments, especially the ones that denote the stereotyped views europeans have about Portugal and portuguese people. Strange, how some people continue to think were a part of Spain or don't really know where we are on the map or even that we are a part of EU since 1986 (we actually joined EU on the same day as Spain), or continue to think we're underdeveloped or don't shower everyday or are a bunch of illiterate, rude and hairy people. I think you've nailed some of the stereotyped idiosincrasies - bureaucracy, etc. But, just to name a few aspects you might want to consider mention in a subsequent video: 1. We dont have a gun culture nor drug dealing cartels; 2. Portugal is, overall one of the safest countries in the world and safest in EU - 3rd in the 2020 global peace index; 3. We have the most proficient population in english both in accent, language command and amount of people that speak it of all southern europe; 4. We have the most advanced legislation on drug use of all EU and we host the European agency for drug use monitoring; 5. We have one the best air quality and water qualith environmenta in the whole of EU, ETC, ETC. Other countries will have their own merits, of course, we all have our cultural specificities, qualities and shortcomings but its important to shatter the prejudiced, narrow-minded dichotomy of north vs south in terms of quality of life and progressiveness of society. And thank you so much for noticing that Portugal indeed is not Spain, and that permanent self-glorifying, self-genocidal spanish ways are not our own. God forbid. Good luck with your life project and best wishes. Take care.

That's a great list! I recently bought a piece of land in the mountains near Gois and I absolutely love it there.Totally off-grid, with a levada running alongside...fresh, clean spring water all year round, isolated, but not remote...a river beach 10 minutes walk away. That night sky! I agree...the Portuguese people have been genuinely friendly and so helpful. I feel I have good friends there. I'm a woman, often there building on my own, and never feel afraid (even a surprise encounter with a wild boar was magical).... I have been rescued more than once...car problems, hurricanes, floods, broken tools.etc etc. My land was a bramble patch when I started to clear it 2 years ago...We dug each and every bramble root out by hand, and now it is something approaching heaven. It takes time and patience, as I'm sure you know. I built a pallet cabin and am going back later in the year to build an outdoor kitchen. Alas....I can only go there for a couple of months each year...for now. I really admire your approach and commitment. I hope you go easy on yourselves...you have achieved so much in such a short time. I hope you enjoy the journey...I know how hard it can feel sometimes, but so worth it. A lot of youngsters are moving out of the big cities and moving their family to the interior to either smaller cities or villages. That's something our country needs, because our smaller cities and villages are ageing fast and getting emptied out. Some municipalities even give benefits to young couples to settle in and raise their families there. Portugal is a great country to live and raise a family in. People just need to look beyond those big noisy overcrowded cities of Lisboa and Porto that, having their strengths, are less safe and healthier than the countryside or even some smaller cities. Well, welcome to Portugal! Have a beautiful life in it, you and your family! You one of us now! 😁💗

The reason second hand cars are so expensive is because we pay A LOT of taxes when we buy them new (sometimes more than 50% of the price, if it's a fancy car...), so that inflated price carries over when people sell them on. Welcome to Portugal. Best wishes.
@marpagapal3312
@marpagapal3312 4 жыл бұрын
Not totally true. 30 years ago owning a car was still kind of a luxury and only since the 2000's owning a car is something in everybody reach. So today you still have more people willing to own a car than cars in the country, that's why cars are expensive, even old cars. while in Netherlands and the UK there are too much used cars for the demand so they became cheap. And the ensurance price also plays its role, up north the ensurance is so high people sell an old car for virtually nothing to spare the ensurance cost while in Portugal the basic ensurance are cheap so many people keep their old cars even tho they don't really need them.

Being from south Europe we asume being family friendly is normal, so it's quite hard having to move to northern Europe and experience the opposite reaction. I am Spanish and I love Portuguese character, they are way more chill than us. But Spain has suffered from mass tourism and seeing how many foreigners go there to live an easy life without integrating, so that is why many are unfriendly to foreigners. It's sad, but it doesn't mean is the way Spanish people are

there is also the fact Spanish poeople are let's say a bit chauvinist, and that is apparent in so many ways - for a Portuguese, the negative experience of being in Spain can be downright painful due to that silly chauvinism - and, in economic terms, that spanish mentality kas terribel consequences for Portugal - spanish put every kind of obstacle to buying Portuguese products, so that the difference between exports and imports with Spain is simply huge, entailing a enormous loss of capital for the country - Portugal is in a situation of draining its resources to Spain, so that in practice it is like a colony of Spain - the truth is that, being in the European Uniuon, there are no legal mechanisms to defend ourselves from spanish chauvinism
@gabrielaalcaide7290
@gabrielaalcaide7290 4 жыл бұрын
Silvério Rebelo i can’t deny that. It is one of the many flaws of many Spanish people. But that doesn’t define our culture or our people. It is quite common to be ashamed of our flag and criticizing our own country. In many ways we are not as balanced and moderate as the Portuguese. we are recognized for being loud, extrovert and often rude... but i think it is because is more noticeable than being quite and discrete, which also many Spanish are. I did ignore that fact about the exports and would love to know more. I guess is similar to what Spain suffered with France, and it is a sign of huge arrogance. What I know for example that in the water management of the rivers, Spanish actions are affecting Portugal big time. I’m aware and it is a shame. I could say it is responsibility of the politicians, but at the end of the day they are supposed to be a reflection of our society... i am not really sure to be honest. It would be like blaming all Dutch people for how their leaders are reacting in the current crisis...it wouldn’t be fair, i think. My comment was more to justify why so many Spanish are not friendly to foreigners, when we use to be friendly people in general. This reaction is a consequence of a very bad managed tourism industry and probably from our poor education system... anyway, i totally understand people who prefer Portuguese character than Spanish, very often i feel the same. And about the European Union... i find it a joke, specially for the PIGS countries, we are all a colony of the richer ones.

Very few people here speak English so you have to make an effort with the language but the locals are so patient and helpful we haven't had any issues. 11th thing: Cork trees. Named Quercus suber, or "Sobreiro" in Portuguese language. If you happen to have one in your property, it is protected by law and you can't cut it down or build around it. You can however extract the cork, much like cut one's hair or trim the nails. They can last for centuries, and are a great asset to have near home.

10 things that are very true. As for the car prices, like in NL there is a special tax on cars (bpm in Dutch) but the way they apply this tax does not conform with EU regulation which makes importing a car very very expensive. And they seem to keep driving their old cars, a lot of Renault 4 here as well. As point no 11 I would mention the ease and possibilities of living off grid here. Plenty of sunshine, you are allowed to take the water from your land (Nora or furo) and use a fossa (septic tank). If you make it a Bio fossa you can Re use the water for your land. I don't think any of that is possible or allowed in NL. I can never see myself leaving my little paradise here in Portugal 🇵🇹

Wow, real, factual picture you painted and a good perspective on Portugal. Liked the video v much and look forward to catch up with many of yours not viewed.My wife and I are vegetarians and also leaning to nondairy most of the time. We love cooking our meals and enjoy eating out some times not all the times. Those 2-3 months they Sept are like Indian summer long ago we were used to but have been enjoying all seasons here in Virginia, USA. Been Wasenar, Holland , it’s a beautiful country but Portugal culture, people, history and cost of living overall combined with good facilities are a plus point. Please throw light on good places to live from your perspective, appreciate.

In parts of Western Australia, on the west coast, the temperature rises into the 50s. I’ve seen a story where a Cattle Station owner built a Willow room for his wife to sleep in. The walls were a loose woven mesh of willow branches and he set up a system to keep them moist (he might have had plenty of water). The main thing is, there has to be a constant breeze to cool the air inside the willow room. I’m in Queensland on the east coast but the western areas of my state, I’ve lived there, get pretty hot too. Love your channel. Good luck!

A couple of things you should know. 1)If you are planing to move to another country, you better do some research about your destination, before you star the trip. 2) the prices of food are similar because both countries (Nederland and Portugal) are part of that thing called European Union. 3) It will be very handy to have a little knowledge of the language they speak, but only if you have plans to stay.

Welcome to Portugal.... one bit of advice.... if you dont speak the language, try English, most portuguese speak or understand it... do NOT try to speak Spanish, we much prefer English. 🇵🇹❤❤❤❤❤
@opensourceecon

Why? I went to Lisbon, twice, and my Portuguese is terrible. So I defaulted to Spanish and had zero issues. Seriously, Spain is the bulk of the peninsula, why would English be easier? Is it prejudice or bias?

Ken Perez I would say it’s like an insult because Portugal it’s 300 older then Spain and Spanish is Castillian, because Spain has a lot of languages including Basque, Galician, Catalán. So you may say it’s a bias reason. I usually we speak better English then Spanish. This doesn’t mean that we don’t speak Spanish...

Hi, it was funny to hear that we like fish so much because of catholic religion :). It isn't , we have a big costal area with lots of fish, and we just love fish...being vegan you can't compare our fish with other country's...Our fish is the best because of the cold waters of the ocean. It was affordable and very nutritious, so yes we like very much. Be safe and happy!
@renatopinto3186
@renatopinto3186 4 жыл бұрын
I laughed at the suggestion 😂 Our coastal waters aren't specially cold, however. Fish is just more accessible or at least has historically been. Fishing was the livelihood of many villages and small-towns that would trade the catch surplus inland. Meat was prohibitively expensive few generations ago so fish proved a reliable protein source. We do love all fish, specially sardine and dry cod (Norwegian of course). 🇵🇹 🇳🇴 🇳🇱

Paula Caldeira. Fish is fish or fish are fish--you choose. There are all types, some being more delicious than others. Whether one is better than the other doesn't depend on the temperature of the water. Galicia, Asturias, and the Basque Country also have fairly cold waters and their fish is just as delicious. What about Iceland and Norway? Most of the cod, which the Portuguese love so much comes from Norway, where the waters are freezing cold. Today there aren't many fish off the Portuguese coast. A lot of it comes from abroad or from fish farms.

I was born in Portugal and we moved to the US when I was a kid. We're In Rhode Island, which is a very small state located between Boston and New York. I chuckled when you stressed that Portugal is very family friendly. We carried that philosophy to the US. Even today you'll see children at weddings, New Years Eve celebrations, etc. When they're tired, they nap in strollers, cuddle on Vo-vo's lap, or we make padded "beds" (using coats) on the floor tucked into a corner. Crazy, but my boys (now grown) have very fond memories of those events! I just discovered your channel and look forward to each post. Thank you for loving my homeland!

European Portuguese might be a little harder than Spanish or Italian, seems kind of compressed. If you're getting some of it, you're making good progress.
