Knowing Vienna well I find the hints very good and informative. Things. But there is one little information missing. The reason not to use the City Airport Train (CAT) is that the public transport line S7 (Schnellbahn = Fast Train) runs in parallel at much, much lower cost and takes just a short time longer by stopping at more quite convenient stations.
@ShelvedGamer
@ShelvedGamer Жыл бұрын
Whoops. Just posted this before seeing what you posted. Yeah, when visiting my gf in Austria I always jump on the S7. It's super cheap and it's what? 30 minutes or so?
@apscoradiales
@apscoradiales Жыл бұрын
If the S7 is the way to go to the city, can one, at least, do a detailed video as to how to use the system? And I mean detailed, from how do you get to it, how to buy tickets, how much they cost, how to use the tickets, where to exit, and so on. Many videos of public transportation systems around the World are not covering it in great detail leaving occasional visitors standing around and wondering what to do next.
@kliberalsing
@kliberalsing Жыл бұрын
Not to say anything too negative about S7, but: What if one prefers clean, smell-free, empty trains that run non-stop from the airport to the centre? Perspective: The airport train from Oslo airport (30 euros), now that is a near-catastrophe. The CAT really isn't.
@viennacalling-travelguide4727

If you compare it to the Railjet train (1,90€) which also leaves every half hour, the cat is still too expensive imo!

I would go so far as to say "Don´t miss out on the tap water!". I´m from Sweden and have lived eight years in Vienna now. I have been spoiled with good quality, drinkable tap water my whole life - but I rank Viennas tap water as one of the best I have ever tasted (yes, water tastes different depending on where it comes from). Viennas tap water is safe, most often free, tastes great and is very refreshing! :) If you want an alternative, drink one of Austrias nice beers or a Radler.

The SIGH if tourists do something wrong is so on point. I think the world misunderstands the "unfriendliness" of Viennese people. Viennese people are very honest with their reactions and mimic. They don't give a shit when they have a bad day - they will let you know they have. But generally, Viennese are friendly and helpful.

Travel on tram line 1 from the Hauptallee stop to Karlsplatz along Kai and Ringstraße and walk over to Belvedere, either visit the museum or just explore the gardens (or both) and finish your day with amazing spare ribs at Salmbräu on Rennweg. 3. day: Museums, if you want to. 4. day: More museums? oh man it was so beautiful. In vienna dont rent a car go with public transportation or on foot it is so beautiful. I actually recommened scrolling around town on foot. i want to shonburn palace it was worth it. the danub tower. the city center, the natrual history musem, danub island..you must go to a musical show. idk now if u can book cause you need to book before. try your best to book a musical conecrt in musikverein vienna, mozart. I can't remember everything or write everything it will take a lot of time. I also suggest going to salzburg and see the nature in wolfgangsee lake, schafberg top mountain, hellstatt, gosau lake, zelamsee, kabrun mountain. krimmil waterfalls. if you rent a car i highly suggest going to grossglockner high alpine road. very beautiful. the lakes in nature has some activites like the oldest salt mine (you would think it is boring but was so much fun) and some has mountains that you can go up to....etc always ask and check what kind of activities in every time. i suggest if you want to go to wolfgangsee you go to st gilgen city then take the ship to the other city then take the train up schafberg mountain. just be sure to get your timing right so you you can spend time up the mountain. (i missed my ticket then i had only 20 minutes up the mountain) etc etc etc i suggest if you wanna go see the nature rent a car but never rent in vienna it is hard to drive there and public transport is great take the 24h or 1 week ticket. it so cheap. the schnitzel is so yum and coffes and deserts are great. strudel , ulmdodler drink.. my spelling of most names are not that accurate but you get the jest of it. yeah i almost forgot.. for night life go to the U4 club... One more thing: Do not ride transit without a valid ticket. There are no fare barriers and bus and tram drivers to not check when you board, and most people just walk on, but that is because they already have a valid ticket. There are random fare inspections, and getting caught without a valid ticket will cost you €105, which they will want in cash immediately. And no, the excuse of “I am not from here, I didn’t know I needed a ticket” will not go very far

As a Viennese I agree on everthing except the City Airport Train. I use it myself. It's a quick an convenient connection and (for me personally) worth the higher price compared to the regular train.

Thanks, Sasha, for the most valuable tips. Just a couple of comments, if I may. I am an expat who has lived in Vienna for the last 16 years. I totally agree that Naschmarkt, for instance, is way overpriced for regular grocery shopping although it has some of the city's most charming restaurants and bars. I only buy things at Naschmarkt very seldom because there are a few that you cannot get anywhere else. That's true. Regarding the CAT train to the airport, as a local, if you have an OeBB card, you get a 50% discount, which at around 7.50 EUR one way makes it just about as reasonable as taking a bus or a regular S-Bahn train. But of course, if the tourists don't have a railway discount card, it makes it quite pricey. On the Viennese grumpiness - it's legendary, and some people may come across as really unfriendly. After all, Vienna has been rated as the second unfriendliest city in all of the Europe after... yes - you guessed it - Paris. :)))) My advise is - just take it in stride and don't pay attention. More often than not it's not directed at you just because you are a tourist. It's just the way it has been for ages... Great tip also about the Sunday shopping. Overall, if you only have one day in Vienna, do NOT go on Sunday unless your main purpose is to stroll in city parks or visit some museums. Vienna on Sunday is empty and can be quite boring. The best time to enjoy it is during the week... Have fun, everyone!

About the CAT, it is expensive. I went back from the airport yesterday and it was my first time using public transportation from there. I compared prices from buses, trains, and the CAT. With a normal train it cost 4,30 from the airport to Vienna and with my annual ticket discount it ended in 1,90 euros. So it is better to use normal trains.
@AndreasR64
@AndreasR64 Жыл бұрын
@@CarolS1008 However, CAT is providing better service. For travel with several airlines, you can already drop your baggage at the station Wien Mitte when going to the airport. And you will not have to squeeze into an overcrowded train with no space for your baggage. Quality has its price, the decision is yours. By the way, comparing CAT to city train services in other cities like Stockholm, Oslo or London, CAT is still a bargain.

Regarding Naschmarkt: there are actually some great and reasonably priced restaurants _around_ the Naschmarkt area, some even just across the street. (Fortunately the only one to really, _really_ avoid closed for good in 2021.)

I live in Vienna for 25 years now. Some years back we my family visited, we were in the city center and didn't know what to do, so we decided to take a Fiaker. It was 80.- for 4 people and to my surprise we had a lot of fun. There are a lot more nonsensical things to spend your money on and i would definitely recommend it.

Very helpful tips indeed. Some of these things can be said about all Austria and Germany. They are very traditional in some ways. Don't even bother going there on a sunday, everything is closed except for churches and it's pretty annoying to be honest. And also there really are many cash only places even in the big cities, especially when it comes to food.

Me as a local agree with everything. The only thing I disagree would be Naschmarkt. If you know what you are looking for, for example some some some local cheese,beef or curry there you can get a pretty good deal… But most things are for tourist and quite expansive indeed.

I don't use ATMs, but when I do there was no problem with Euronet in Austria. They don't have limit, but others have withdrawal limit. I better pay commission once then many times. My private ATM record is 15 euros commission fee on 50 euro withdrawal for 3 times in Germany when I was using international bank ATM. Lost 45 euros on 150.

Hello! Very nice video. Could you please tell me more about ''Bratislava-Ticket''? I was planning to go from Vienna to Bratislava by boat (just because of the experience of navigating the Danubio) and come back by train. When I searched for the train ticket from Bratislava HL ST to Wien HBF it costs around 11eur, but searching online I found the Bratislava-Ticket for 9/18 euros round-trip and you can use public transportation for a day. Is it to good to be true or is there a catch that I didn't realize? Thank you very much.
