Disney has done a lot of great things for popular culture, and touched countless lives across the globe. Their movies are touted as being wholesome and full of morality, in addition to being fun for the whole family. Through the ages, their heroines, heroes, and villains have been some of the most iconic in all of cinematic history. But there are some critical eyes out there too, and some adults aren’t convinced that the lessons on the big screen are always the right ones. Body image, avoidance, self-esteem, confidence, criminality, stranger danger, and the dangers of salmonella are all embedded in the fabric of the movies, you just have to look for them. Wholesome tales of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, Robin Hood and The Princess and The Frog are not so innocent after all. And using a keen eye, you’ll see what we mean.

Screen Rant get this my dad feel that The Lion King 2 is actually about influence to he doesn't like the whole movie just because of one lion Nuka just because that he wanted so much attention from his mom or just cuz he wanted to be a leader he ended up dying I say different it's mostly just because he wanted to be noticed a bit more I mean what you want to be noticed more for a family member that really paid attention to you and whenever they did they yelled at you or angry only time she actually cared was when he was dying and he died in her hand and yet my dad still feels that he died just cuz he was getting attention but hey any lion could have stupidly gone up there and just immediately slipped on the logs and died it's just how the story went because the in every movie someone seems to die anyone I don't care who villain good guy or anyone someone dies it's horrible but still it's just what happens in the movie it's part of THE PLOT HERE DAD YEESH !

I have to agree with Perrylol090 Msp. If anyone's going to a social event they don't go in whatever smelly clothes they work in. They wash themselves and make themselves look somewhat presentable. That's all Cinderella really did. She still acted and behaved like herself throughout the story. It's not like Aladdin where he pretended to be and acted as something he's clearly not. After all, didn't the prince still love Cinderella even though he eventually found her in her unkempt work attire clearly showing she was a servant? I think this argument that Cinderalla "changed herself to appeal to others" is the result of some over protective parents who are looking far too deep into a film so they can pretend they are being a good parent in the eyes of other people.

I don't think you can take a movie from the 30s and complain that it's not empowering women... Disneys Princesses always reflect the era they were created in. You can't say snow white is a bad example for young girls now, because it's target audience was young girls in the 1930s... it was a different time. I'm not saying it was good, but damn it was 80 years ago.

Miinus Miau your logic is so flawed that I have no choice but to assume your living in a bubble of ignorance or are young. No; Right and Wrong are not subject to time and nothing is immune from criticism as a result. It was always bad as was nazi, slavery and child labor to say otherwise spits on those who sacrificed to changed things.

Miinus Miau your train of thought is dangerous as it wishes to preserve unsavory messages for the sake of nostalgia which minds you what's wholesome for one group of women in the 30s wasn't not for all. As time progresses we are supposed to look back at our media and decide what's worth keeping around Some of these Disney "classics" may not stand up to the test of time. I say good riddance as i never would let a child I'm rearing be expose to some of them.

THANK YOU yes if anything it was her belief in her dreams and her unwavering kindness that got her her prince charming or did none of these parents see the third film when he held Cinderella's hand it was a connection and again with Ariel uh parents it's kinda hard for her to be with a HUMAN if he can't live in her world and she can't live in his with a pair of fins kinda makes it hard to oh I don't know breath for one and walk on land or for him to swim with his easily weakened pair of human legs ever tried swimming for hours you'd be exhausted and would drown without a rock to sit on and how often do they show up in the ocean.

Originally Disney Princesses referred to mostly the star and/or supporting female characters in Disney movies. Now they changed it to once a year Disney has an Official Ceremony at Disneyland to determine which Female Disney Character gets to be named Disney Princess for that year. So now the only Disney Princesses are the ones that were elected as Disney Princess for a year, and any prior princesses from before the ceremonies are no longer Disney Princesses.

Although Disney 'kinda' revived the true dark side of some selected fairy tales when they pursued their live adaptation of Into The Woods nevertheless you are right that Disney tried its best to alter most of the stories' endings and main plot to suit their young audience, but on the bad side it tends to move far from the original, giving no more recognition to its origin

And these SJWs forget that Disney cleaned these stories up for the big screen, because most of these were far from G rated. An example, in the original Cinderella story, the stepsisters end up mutilating their feet to fit into the slippers, and only get caught when the prince sees the blood on their stockings, as well as end up getting their eyes pecked out by the birds.

What you said about frozen wasn't exactly true. The message Disney got across was, "Running away from your problems leads to consequences. It's better to face your issues, because if you don't, they'll catch up to you." That's what I found the message of frozen to be, like if you agree!

They were also wrong about another thing about Frozen, but this one is worse. It should have been on the Salmonella warning. "Why?" you may be asking; because Anna was holding ducklings, and didn't wash her hands afterward. My parents recently got chickens, so my mother was looking into health warnings for them. She came across a lot of warnings talking about how you can get salmonella from touching birds such as ducks and chickens.

It really annoys me when people critics hunchback for the fact that Esmeralda got with Phebas and not Quasimodo. For one thing she already got to Phebas before she got to know Quasi, and she only fell for him after he proved he was a good man. As for Quasi the move was not about him finding romance it was about him finding love and exceptnce within his community as well as within himself.

Aurora fell inlove with the prince even before she fell to eternal sleep. The prince's actions and what he had to do to save Aurora just goes to show that Aurora had the guy he wanted from the start and he was the guy who had to kill Maleficent just for Aurora. She was cursed. And what better way to saved than to be saved by your prince. The hunchback of notre dame shows how society is and how it's dealt with. Disney tries to portrait an image of looking beyond the picture. Esmeralda was inlove with the night and it would just show that Esmeralda had to pick Quasimodo out of empathy. The movie showed love and sacrifice. Cinderella dressed up. all girls do that. Not to mention that we love to be the center of attraction. She never changed for the prince. The prince even still accepted her despite knowing she's just a maid. Elsa shows that most people are in her situation. They have problems and they run away from it. The movie shows that running away from your problems isn't the answer because you're only affecting other people when you don't solve it.

The Frozen one doesn't really seem like a bad message in my opinion. Yes, running away from your problems instead of confronting them and dealing with them is bad. But when Elsa ran from her problems, the movie made it pretty clear that what she did caused more harm than help. Just because someone from a Disney movie does something, doesn't mean Disney's teaching that it's okay. Rather, in many cases, it has their characters do harmful things, and show the negative outcome, so the audience can learn from the character's mistakes. And the villainy problem is similar. The villains are never the winners in the Disney movies. This shows that doing bad things might seem like a good idea, but in the end, get you nowhere and can even make you worse off than when you started.

Ome Modnar Unless few Disney villains (e.g. Foxy Loxy from Disney's 1943 Chicken Little and Headless Horseman from Ichabod And Toad) did won against a hero but at least they deserved it anyways. But for Elsa, she should became a great villain than a Mary-Sue-ish character that totally made fans crazy in different ways, but why Hans? Hans is very innocent from the role but changed into a villain plus why Kris? Does Disney need to be faithful for a woman who felt in love with a male friend other than a lovely prince? Nope, at least Mario from Super Mario Bros. got three girlfriends (Peach, Daisy, and Pauline).

Also Elsa left thinking that if she was gone the problem would have stopped which is why she was surprised when Anna said the kingdom was in deep snow and is also why she went with prince Hans after learning she hurt Anna. This is mostly wrong. You point out bad things that the different characters do, but ignore the fact that bad stuff happens to them because of it. Snow white takes the apple from the stranger, yes, but ends up dying because of it. By that logic, the entirety of Pinnochio should have been on this list, as well as Peter Pan and Aladin, and in fact they probably should instead of Cinderella, who just changes her CLOTHING so that she can go to the KING'S BALL!!! Do better research next time.

My own quibble with this assessment is that Ariel didn't give up everything, and she didn't do it for a man. She had been infatuated with the land above the sea for a LONG time. She wanted to go there and experience that life more than anything, and it just happened that her encounter with Erik compounded that feeling. And what she gave up? Her voice was something that was valued by others... not herself. Singing wasn't a priority for her, it was something she was talked into doing as like... a family activity? All her sisters were doing it. She knew she would have to give up her family to live on land, but she had just had a huge fight with her father and probably thought (irrationally) she didn't have a family worth staying for anymore.

In The Hunchback of Notre Dame getting the girl wasn't the point of the story. Realizing that having friends that loved and accepted him for who he was is what gave him his happy ending. Plus Esmeralda had already started having feelings for Phoebus before she even met Quasimodo.

One can argue that the outfit Cinderella transforms into is just a reflection of inner self, and the rags represent an urgency to avoid being herself out of fear of her Evil Stepmother. So, thus, Prince Charming is falling for Cinderella for who she is, and not a fragment of her personality; which completely refutes the claim proposed.

well. a lot of these you can't really be mad at. for one, they were made in the 1950s or so. for two, they were based on classic fairy tales, and you can't make an adaptation of a story and change it to suit your modern-thinking ways without sacrificing the integrity of the story (*cue all book-lovers screaming at the inaccuracy of the already inaccurate Disney movie*). and a good chunk of them wasn't created in a time period where this was seen as "a bad example," just normal. for three, some of these so-called bad examples are really just cases where the child has to be smart enough to not do everything the movie tells them to. or at least have a parent that doesn't let them get up to random, preventable trouble (if the parent is at the very least a decent one). ah, well.

Okay, Elsa did run away from her problems, but just like real life it all caught up to her. She didn't know the consequences of her actions, and when everyone started coming over to her fortress she was taken back to where her problems began. The more she tried to run, the harder the storm around her got and resulted in the near death of the one person she truly cared for. If you didn't get that, you weren't really watching the movie and just wanted something more to complain about. I'm not saying it's a perfect movie or anything, it's honestly just my own take on it.

OK but Elsa running away is because she's literally a metaphor for depression. She thinks no one will listen to her or understand what she's going through, she's trying to fight her own demons that are inside of her, and she feels lonely and doesn't know what to do. She runs away because she's scared, everyone thought she was a monster/witch so it kind of makes sense.

"Don't drink from unmarked bottles!" That's correct. I was at summer camp and we were doing this hike. When we reached the peak, we had a good lunch with the group. The place had no bathroom so you had to go behind a bush or something. Some kids started exploring around the area, and a guy found two full bottles of unknown liquid under a boulder. Nobody knew what it was, so he drank from one of the bottles. Then he coughed it up and barfed, screaming "Augh, it's disgusting!" I asked him, "What did it taste like?" He said, "It tasted like sweat, and was very very salty." I was like, "Ohhhhh, I know what you drank now. O_O" Did you guess? Yup, it was pee! After all that the guy was like, "Yeah, I'm Bear Grylls now!" SO kids, never drink something if you don't know what it is. You might just join the Bear Grylls Club.

Disney can't really be blamed for the Robin Hood Story, it,s an adaptation of a legend. And what's more, it's not truly theft, at least not by my definition. The money was stolen as "taxes" by an illegitimate, oppressive government (a monarchy, i.e. Prince John) for their own self-indulgence rather than the betterment of the people, the true function of government. He's a rebel against a corrupt tyranny, and it is a good lesson for children that we should question our rulers and act out against tyranny.

Cinderella, Snow White, Robin Hood, Alice In Wonderland, The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty are all based off of old fairytales, and unlike Tangled and The Princess And The Frog, they don't have twists. These strories are old and don't fit the era we're living in, which is why they don't seem empowering enough for young girls. Frozen isn't supposed to send the message of running away from your problems if you watch the whole movie. The Little Mermaid is only good because of Ursela anyway. Parents should tell their kids that kissing frogs won't work. Be happy that the new movies send out positive messages! Barbie doesn't seem to be doing that anymore. Screen Rant should really get on Mattel's case, then they will have something to rant about!

Esmerelda chose Phoebus because he was not only attractive, but prove himself to be a genuinely good person who would go against Frollo's rules. She didn't even know Quasi was in love with her. Frollo trying to murder her because she didn't want him shows that he is the monster, while Quasi maturely letting her go shows that is the man. Her picking Phoebus does not break the movies message, it strengthens it. I hate when people try to make the argument otherwise.

I disagree with your point about The Little Mermaid. I think that Ariel had lots of reasons for wanting to become human, not just her prince. She talks about everything she wants to do in the human world, like, ask questions, see the sights, and meet new people. She wants to become human so she can partake in all the aspects of human life and culture. Meeting and falling in love with the prince just pushes her over the edge. There are other examples of bad messages in the Little Mermaid, such as disobeying your parents gets you everything you want in life, but I don't think the point you made is one of them.

Everything these people complained about was in the original stories Disney based the movies on with the only example being Frozen and the message of Frozen is you can't avoid your problem. Whoever said that about Frozen totally missed the point or walked out before Elsa learned that. And only dumb kids were kissing frogs, if they were paying attention the only frog would be a talking frog. No talk, no kiss. And the kiss of the frog was again part of the original story. That story had girls kissing wild frogs for centuries. The Ned Flanders of the world need to lighten up and stop Policing movies.

They've used the jungle book emoji like 3 times before. Mabye they should fire their "writers". Also next time add another tree. The jungle has more than one you know

These are a little weak. The portions of the stories being highlighted aren't exactly the Disney aspects of the story but rather mostly the original aspects of the story. For example, with the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo didn't get the girl either (in fact, the original is morbidly dark and depressing...). With Frozen, avoidance was the problem she had to solve and learn from, not the endorsement. Kids aren't as dumb as people think they are.

To be fair to Hunchback, Esmeralda didn't love Quasi romantically in the book either. She always loved Phoebus.
