I am a teacher of 19 years, and I can tell you that bonding and getting your students trust is very important. You can teach until you are blue in the face. A child has to want to learn, and by doing this is by having some fun and forming good relationships with each of them.

tip: keep a box of tissues in your desk so that you can cry during your prep and lunch.

I find that if the teachers connect with the students, joking around a little bit, it helps. The teacher shouldn't be seen as just a teacher, but also a friend and helper. I'm in middle school currently, and my English and Science teachers have teacher Instagrams. Really fun.

I must say I have put on the brakes and like you I feel like small group is one thing that is the most important to get better at and even though I have been saying it I have been trying to get better at other multiple things such as stations, decorating my room, and etc. I am definitely stopping and focusing on small groups over the summer and the new year to come. Teaching over the years has taught me to always balance my classes by making them challenging and yet fun. Classroom management is always a tough one because I don’t enjoy disciplining students. But sometimes just talking to them one on one or calling Home can do wonders

Good advice. Too many new teachers become overwhelmed and as a consequence, lose focus. This can happen quite frequently in the UK. We are losing too many good teachers!

I just got hired for a 1 year leave as a 6th grade science teacher and Special ed co-teacher in a city school. I've subbed in the suburbs for 6 years already in all grade levels, and have done pretty much everything. This year I won't have my own classroom so I'll be kinda everywhere. I'm a bit nervous but considering I've had so much experience already, I'm thinking it'll come to my advantage. I just hope i do well and I know it'll be a learning process, but it's definitely going to be a change from what I've been doing already.

This is the 9th month of my First Year as a High School Teacher and I actually sort of teared up watching this vid because it's really like really true. It's indeed a struggle! It's survival. It's always a TEST, your skills, your competence, your effort so you push yourself to the best of your abilities everyday, your confidence, your strength as a person. The pressure is on to prove yourself to your kids whom you really care about and love and to the admins who will smile at you on your first week and after that ignores you on the hallway and you go thinking am I awful on observations? am I stupid? It's a lot to take in. I was super stressed. I'm crying a lot, I'm crying so much because I feel really bad on most days. It's failure left and right It's so hard to pick up yourself. But you know what, I am a teacher, everything is a process. I'm going to be better, I'm going to improve, MY SECOND YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT BECAUSE MY FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE MOLDED ME TO BE BETTER. Just patience, grit, intelligence and trust, we will get there. I swear!

ya i agree its easier to be-able to do all the stuff but when you actually get in front of the class room . It all changes so what i am trying to figure is the optimal gradual way to acquire the skills without actually being in front of the classroom to easy the transition when you actually get infront of an audience. Behavior management is a must for lower level its more important at that stage of teaching then pure knowledge.

I am on my last year of college I am getting my BA in Early Childhood, during one of my observations of a kindergarten room I was so impressed with the teacher and the way her classroom flowed. I think that being fair to your students no matter what will make listening to you WAAAY easier. Like seriously I hate when teachers never give reasons behind their actions and only command things to show authority, “Because I said so” is THE WORST thing you can say in response to “why”. If you treat your students like an equal other than underlings who absolutely must obey every command just because the command escaped your lips, they’ll trust your judgement and it may make listening to you much easier

So happy I found this channel! I'm in year 3 out of 5 in my concurrent education university program, and I plan on teaching French when all is said and done. Thankfully, my program has practicum teaching placements every single year, so we bank a few years of teaching experience before actually landing a full time job. I think I get a little overwhelmed when I think of all the content and resources I need to accumulate to get through an entire year! Blows my mind how much stuff some teachers keep on hand - and most of it is useful! Any tips on how to get your hands on anything and everything? Also, I'm not sure if its the same everywhere, but I hear many teachers end up spending a ton of their own money to buy various resources for their classroom, any tips/feedback on that?

Tip 2 is very important. Behaviour management is one of the most important things to get right when creating a good learning environment. I remember hearing a particularly relevant phrase for good practice - 'Don't smile until Christmas'. When most classes start off in the new term in September, its better to start out stricter and gradually ease into become more lenient once you've got to know the students. Usually after the Christmas period, must teachers have figure out what works and what doesn't when managing the classroom; the same goes for the students regarding their behaviour.
