Hey. An important tip. Your bank card will always give you the best conversion rate so when you're buying something in Paris, and they give you an option to pay in euros or dollers, ALWAYS pick euros. Your bank will convert it and give you the best rate.

Tip from a seasoned European city breaker of decades experience. Whatever you do, do NOT buy a Paris Pass, or indeed any such city pass. Unless you intend to take about ten metro/bus journeys a day and visit about eight attractions a day you will not get value from it. Most city breakers on average only use public transport 3-5 times a day and visit no more than 4-5 attractions a day. if you take the time to price this up you will find that a day travel pass and paying at the gate for what you visit will work out cheaper. The Paris Pass, indeed most city passes are a trap that most inexperienced city breakers fall for. I too was once guilty until I started actually looking at the costs of what I would have spent without it. Also Remember if you're an EU citizen under the age of 25, most Paris attractions are free anyway!

I am visiting Paris very soon, and was looking at ways to save money. Most people said that Paris Pass is the best way to save money, and I did the math and didn't think it was a good option for me. But not even the paris visite pass (transportation)? Can you share more tips about traveling to Paris?
@TheGiantKillers
@TheGiantKillers 7 жыл бұрын
Work out what you want to do before you visit. Then put each location on a Google map. Plan out when you will visit each location and do it in an order that keeps travel minimal. Pick out your big popular things {Tower etc} and do them first thing in the morning, plan lunch somewhere nearby [why sit in an expensive cafe when you can go to a supermarket and buy a sandwich a drink and a piece of fruit. then sit down and enjoy lunch wherever you want while watching the world go by] In the afternoon visit whatever other planned attraction is closest to where you went in the morning. [If the queue will keep you waiting more than two hours, forget it until the following morning - No attraction anywhere in the world is worth standing in a line doing nothing for that long] Plan the travel in advance on Google and see how much it will cost? Are there cheaper discount options? If you speak the language buy your tickets from the manned offices rather than the auto booths when possible. If there are discount fares the staff will give them to you, the auto booths won't. In the evenings pick an attraction, bar, club, restaurant and try to stick within walking distance for the rest of the evening. Check the various locations you're visiting. weigh up the pros of buying queue jumper passes [which are more expensive but save time] against staying in the queue [cheaper but how much of your visit are you prepared to waste in queue?] What are the most popular attractions you're going to visit? get there early and visit their website before visiting. They may have packages and deals when booking in advance or in conjunction with other attractions. You've got the first act right. City Passes are a trap many people fall into. You often end up paying more for a book of discounts you can't possibly recoup on because you either can't or don't want to visit most of the attractions offered.

Great tips, thanks so much. I've been looking at the websites of major attractions such as the Eiffel tower, the louvre museum, etc and checking out options to buy tickets online and save time. I will be staying in Montmarte so will have to plan ahead for everyday. I will def. keep your suggestions in mind. Thanks again. P.S. Love your writing/talking style :)

Some other “tip” : •learn how to ask for directions and how to understand the answer. Most french people don’t speak English at all but if you’re really lost ask directions from teens or young adults as they would be more likely to be able to communicate. •Don’t buy anything from the distributor it’s way too overpriced. •in trains, you will see foldable seat. It’s common sense to get up of those when the train is becoming crowded. •always have a cloth with some perfume on it, stations often smell like piss. And hand sanitizer for obvious reasons •Sometimes you’ll see people playing “gambling” game in the streets near touristic places. Do not stop to look or at least beware of pickpockets and do not try it’s a scam. •If you ever need to refill a bottle, there’s drinkable water in most parcs.

Super helpful tips, especially the pick pocketers! Thanks, girl!! 👍🏼 The French language doesn't have AM/PM, so that's why they use military time. One of the few things that stuck from French class haha!
@wberckmann
@wberckmann 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have am and pm but just don't call it that. "Du matin = morning; de l'après-midi = in the afternoon; du soir = in the evening. 24 hour time is used for trains, museums, sometimes for restaurants and for official business. Most people don't use it otherwise.

Loved this video! We had heard that during the transaction, if you say "yes, change Euro to USD" they can sneak in fees because they change the conversion rate to a higher rate...so it looks like a good deal, but you're not really in control of what conversion rate they give you. It's all super confusing but I think that's what I read!

A few more tips. If you see a WC (restroom)... use it because they are not always available. Just use it. If the Metro Train is full turn your back to the doorway and step up pushing people back with your butt. This works and is not as aggressive as pushing in with your arms. My last tip is to always ask to see something in a store so you do not get your hand slapped for touching something. Make friends with the clerk and you will have a better experience. Oh and eat as many croissants as you can because they are amazing. Oh and if you miss the last Train... you are walking to your hotel... Taxis are horrible and expensive. Just plan on walking. You are going to walk and walk and walk in Paris.

Thanks so much for your great and informative videos about Paris! They bring back classic memories of my first ever solo weekend in the city. And you're absolutely right about the Paris Museum Pass and access to public transportation, especially on the RER. Nice video. I personally like Military or 24 hr time. There is no room for confusion with it. I agree with everything you said except for the Paris Pass. It may work for some though. The French language is very hard for me other than the basics. I do try though even though it is with an American accent.
