I think a 2 way dash cam is a must to protect yourself from road issues accidents and problematic passengers... In case there is a doubt or argument you watch the videos. Everyone who spends a significant time on the road should have one.

100% agree! My wife recently got in an accident (fortunately with no one in the car) and the first thing we were thinking is how much we wish we had a dash cam!

3000+ trips and I think a camera might have helped me about 4 times. Not going to worry about it. Life is too short and I don't want my passengers thinking their conversations are being recorded. What happens in my Uber stays in my Uber. I am taking a risk but I am a big boy and I can handle it. Plus you always get some cool stories to tell people about your worst Uber riders.

I can agree with that. Up until this point, a dash cam would have helped me 0 times, but never say never... I think it would be fun to have recordings of awful passengers personally.

Some say a dash cam is also helpful to prevent issues. As passengers will not do crazy stuff on camera...

All really good tips. I had not thought about all weather mats, but will be buying some once I hit my second $1K in earnings. Watching out for them on eBay now... Bought my dash cam with my first $1K in earnings. Love the candy in cup holders idea. Already doing most of these. Really nice to have other customer friendly drivers confirm best practices :)

I have a 4.93 and I don't offer water/juice/candy/gum. I ask passengers how their day/evening/night is going, respond accordingly and get them where they are going. The only thing that I do when I drop them off is ask them if they have their phones, wallets, keys ext, and tell them to have a good day/evening/night. Other than that I just keep the car mostly clean inside and out and make sure it doesn't smell bad.

I'm not too concerned about what other people have to say. I'm fine with people disagreeing as to what makes someone a top Uber driver, but there really isn't a fair metric to use besides driver rating. I recently took a ride from a driver with 11,000 trips. His car was filthy, but he was a pretty nice guy just trying to make a living. I gave him a 5 and tipped him like I do every ride I take. Most people obviously don't have a problem with him because I think his rating was like a 4.81, but it's plain to see a few little improvements would help him stand out and probably get tipped more often. If you're going to use Uber as a second or even a first job, you might as well treat it like a job right? Costs very little to do the little extra that I do and it yields results.

4.99 rating in Lyft. Smile. Don’t be an asshole. Keep your car clean. Drive well, keeping as much of a distance between you and the car ahead of you as possible. No sudden stops and fast accelerations. All stuff you’ve heard before but it’s really the most important. Make your car smell nice but don’t overdo it. I use organic essential oils personally. Ask your rider how he or she is doing/how his or her day is going. Their response gives me an idea if they want to talk or not about 75% of the time. I also play casual and relaxing music.

These are really good tips for the newer drivers and for those with low ratings. I always have water, snacks, tissues, and phone chargers. These actually help a lot when you have a long distance trip. Another thing I started having on my car is emesis bags (those are the blue bags you see at the hospital for vomiting) they come really handy for those riders with motion sickness or your typical drunk late at night. I have a first aid bag with a few OTC medications. I work EMS full time so I can relate a lot when im doing uber.

@@TroveLessTraveled_ Yes ! last night one of my late night passengers started vomiting instantly but I was glad he got a hold of the bag in time. Nothing spilled but the awful smell was in the air, he was even nice enough to tip me 12 bucks on a 2 mile ride. Honestly its a lot better having those because they're small and you can close them to cover the smell. I cant imagine going out of service because you need to clean up, been there done that and it sucks. best luck to you !

All the tips you have provided I’ve been doing and definitely works with the riders giving me a 5 star rating (except for one 4 star.) Obviously as a part-time driver (and I'm sure all part-time drivers would feel the same way) I hope there's a day I don't have to drive at all! If you know how to communicate with people you'll rarely have a problem being successful in life. Most people are probably not as gifted as you Ezra. I mean that will all sincerity. For those people who drive and struggle with a language barrier (maybe an immigrant who doesn't speak English well yet), someone who is a bit introverted, or maybe just isn't a confident driver, these tips may be invaluable for them. Thanks for the comment! I hope you continue to make Uber an incredible platform for part-time drivers like me to benefit from, both as a rider and a driver.

I have had 2 instances where people opened a water and then put it back. Can't understand what these people are thinking sometimes, but it's the nature of the job. People tend to do 1 of 3 things with their trash: put it in the cup holder, put it in the seat back pocket (not a big deal), or take it with them. I just keep an eye out and try to keep it clean. It pays off!

#6 - - Find a car wash that only charges a dollar to wash the car yourself and stop by every couple of days. Takes five minutes and costs next to nothing. And vacuum if necessary.
@TroveLessTraveled_
@TroveLessTraveled_ 4 жыл бұрын
Here here! I started doing that recently. There is a car wash near the house that is $1 for 2 minutes. I'll just put in $1 and give it a quick soap and rinse. It's just like doing dishes. The quicker you get to cleaning the quicker you get the dishes clean. If you only wash your car once every 2-3 weeks it takes longer to clean. $1/week problem solved.

I picked up an old guy this morning with his 2 grand daughters. He was baby sitting for his son and taking the oldest one (5 years old) to school. The youngest was a baby and I helped the guy install the carseat in the back and unhook it later. I had to take my son to school a little later. I took them to school and waited with them at a nearby gas station until another driver could pick them up for the return trip so I could leave for my son. The next driver was a real piece of work. Car was filthy inside and out. Young thuggy guy. Never offered to help with the rider's things and car seat. I felt bad for the old guy having to go from me to the other guy.

Michael, just shows how important it is to always be professional right? If your experience was positive enough to outshine the negative experience he may have had right after you, he will probably still choose Uber/Lyft in the future. For that, all of us in every city benefit. If he takes a trip to California and his experience with each of you was terrible he may choose another means of transportation and that affects me. See how we're all really on the same team?! Keep up the good work!

Heavy construction and congestion is my killing ratings in Chicago! Plus customers trying to bring too much luggage for a small car. These people act like they ordered a limo! Also most drivers don't have room to waste with water bottles and a cooler to keep them cool. I feel the review system is broken if you have to bribe customers with freebies! Just not right!
@TroveLessTraveled_
@TroveLessTraveled_ 5 жыл бұрын
I've had that happen a few times to me as well with the luggage. I had passengers bring 5 suitcases for 3 people in my Prius for an UberX. They wouldn't fit in the trunk so I reasoned with them. I explained it would probably be a more comfortable albeit more expensive ride to cancel with me and take an UberXL or they could each put a suitcase on their lap. They chose a suitcase on each lap and left me a tip afterward. As far as bribing customers, for me it's twofold. Yes, it improves my ratings, but in my opinion (and the numbers match) I make it up and more in tips. I don't solicit tips or ratings. I just invested in myself and it's paid off. I'll tell this story again. I took a ride recently with a driver who had 11,000 trips. His car was filthy but his rating was still a 4.81. I think that was largely due to his kindness. I had no problem leaving him 5 stars. So if the only thing you can do is increase your happiness, that will probably be sufficient for most people. Thanks for the comment Nic and good luck out there!

Thr amenities are great. I was an uber passenger for 1 year. I have a 4.98 rating and I took about 600 rides and EVERY Uber/Lyft driver got a 5 Star rating from me just for getting me to my destination SAFE and timely. I even argued with a woman who was speeding thru the park (25 mile zone and she was doing 40) at 5:30 a.m. no less (I'm a nurse omw to work). I just warned her that the cops WILL lay in the cut and you Will get ticketed and if you were exercising in the park or your kids are playing etc...you'd want safe drivers. She apologizedgized. This combative itch got me to my destination SAFE. I gave her 5 stars. I'm not that darn petty but unfortunately some people are.

100% agree. I think that comes from experience. Most people are pretty introverted around new people anyways. I just ask a few quick questions and based on their responses I'll gauge if they'd just prefer to play on their phone in the back. Certainly, a skill to know when to shut up, but my wife is pretty vocal about it so I've been well trained!

I really want to commend you on the pride and honor that you take in your work. In this day and age, it's pretty rare seeing anyone who is willing to go the extra mile and not expect to be compensated, awarded or commended for doing it. You have a superlative work ethic which definitely makes you an asset to Uber, and I sincerely hope that they recognize you accordingly for earning that exceptionally high rating that you have. I think that there are far too many people in this world who are only willing to do the absolute bare minimum that is required of them at their jobs... And unfortunately, it's that insipid type of attitude that is becoming more and more of the expected 'norm'. Thank you for being such an exemplar role model, and as an Uber driver and as a rider myself - I applaud you & appreciate you very much!!!

Hey I was a passenger you picked up a few months ago and I enjoyed your prompt service. Btw I do appreciate the water but didn't take it only because I didn't know if it had been tampered with. Same goes with other drivers that offer candy or snacks. You just never know as a passenger.

I have done over 1,100 trips with Uber and my rating is 4.97. I've done 7 of the 10 things you have suggested in your video. I three I have not done is have any wrapped candy, asked a rider if they had a preferred route, and I normally listen to sports radio and only on a few occasions have I been asked to switch to a music station.
@TroveLessTraveled_

I've definitely thought of keeping the Bill Simmons podcast on when passengers get in the car but I'm a fan of providing a neutral experience for riders. I think candy is a great way to improve your tips and I've found it to be helpful in growing my bottom line, but to each their own. As for asking a preferred destination, if I'm taking someone to work or taking an older local who I assume has a routine I think it's a good practice to ask. Older people tend to not rely on GPS and may not be familiar with the route the app provides. Other than that it sounds like you're killing it out there! Keep up the good work!

I do have chargers as well. Why do I have a high rating and get insane tips??????? For 5 years, I have passed out a $1.00 lottery scratcher to 99% of passengers. I get a roughly 3-1 rate of return. There is nothing better than getting a repeat passenger. They get so excited, because they know what they're about to get. There has not been a better idea presented to make the ride more enjoyable.

I'm not suggesting you can't be professional in pajamas and a night cap, but for me personally, I just try to be 1% better in every area, and the way someone is dressed does send a message. That's not debatable, however the way you conduct yourself speaks much louder than what you're wearing, I do agree on that.

I do not talk unless they start! Anytime anyone tells me to go this way, I'd certainly follow. And I've reached 5.00 three times but it dropped quite quickly! I got scared when it reached down to 4.80 or 4.75! Most of the riders are friendly.. My car is clean inside, I clean outside as often as needed, simply wax it at least every 2 weeks, my driving is perfect, so I do not understand why the rating can go down quite fast! To go up is rather slow!
@TroveLessTraveled_
@TroveLessTraveled_ 5 жыл бұрын
The one tricky thing about Uber ratings is that it only takes into account your last 500 ratings. Older ratings after 500 drop off. So if you recently received a 1 or a 2 it will replace a 5 that drops off and you'll have to work back up. I clean the outside as often as necessary, but keeping the inside clean is mandatory. A little small talk can go a long way to making the ride better for people! Keep working hard and the results will follow!

Regardless is you are driving part time or full time, at the end of the day, Uber charges 25% of your earnings, then you have to set aside 40% for your taxes. That adds up to a lot of money deducted from your earnings, not including wear and tear on your car, racking up thousands of miles on your engine and everything else, you have to pay for gas constantly, after three years or so, you will need a brand new car, if not sooner.

Uber says that it takes a lot for a driver to receive a one-star rating. In fact, as of 2014, only 1% of driver ratings are one-star, and 5% of trips are rated three stars or lower. The leading causes of one-star ratings are fights or harassment, a problem that Uber has repeatedly struggled with. Average rating is 4.8. Want to be on top? Be nice, clean your car, drive carefully, as you would an infant or senior citizen :)

Congrats on the rating! I'm in Dallas and fluctuate between a 4.94 and 4.95 on Uber, and I have a 5.00 on Lyft, after about 600 rides total. I agree with your points on cleanliness, conversation, dress, safe driving, etc. Just FYI I don't offer any water or candy or anything to riders. I actually do not have one single sticker or sign on my vehicle for Uber or Lyft (only sharing as FYI, my wife won't let me put any stickers on the vehicle and riders have never mentioned the lack of signs even once). I drive a 2014 Escalade ESV Platinum black/black but I don't do Uber Black or SUV. I focus on XL, Select for Uber, and Plus, Premier, Lux and Lux SUV for Lyft. My advice is to save your money and get a larger black vehicle ASAP for $20,000 that will allow you to drive in these categories. I run a net profit rate after gas of 84%. I only work 20 hours a week and net over $2,000/month after gas. I think the key is that when someone gets in my car their expectations are immediately exceeded. I am extremely friendly and patient, and will pretty much do whatever the customer wants within reason (stops, go to different location, etc.). I get tips on probably 80% of all rides.

Idk what happened to me but my rating fluctuates greatly. And I think it depends on the type of passengers I get tbh. I was at 4.78 and I took pride to fix my driving style. And the ratings represented that because I eventually jumped to 4.91. That was my last rating 4 weeks ago. From that time to now I've gone down to a 4.85 (I'm at 2,100 rides). Which I just don't understand because I haven't done anything different since I've mentally checked-in to become a better driver. I'm less aggressive, I drive as smooth as I can, I keep the outside and interior clean at all times. Granted I drive a stick shift car, but that shouldn't have a major impact since I went from 4.78 up to a 4.91 back down to a 4.85. It's like the damn stock market. And I dead ass, would feel bad to see my rating go down lol and stress out about it. I guess just don't focus on the rating and drive safely and you'll be fine. At the end of the day, good rating or bad rating you're still getting paid! 💰 💰 💰

Remember that only your last 500 ratings count towards your score. They fall off after that! So it's possible you had a lot of 5s fall off and then finally some old 1s fell off and you're leveling out. Keep striving for 5s and the tips will follow!

It's crazy to see your rating drop when someone gives you a 1 star. When I started, I was at 5 stars for a couple of months. But then one night I had a problem finding a couple (2 men) who address led me to a cul-de-sac and I couldn't find them. Well I called them and found out they were about 100 yards away from me on the other side of the brick wall at a taco bell parking lot. So I eventually found them and apologized for the delay. But to make matter worse, they were arguing with each other for the whole 15 minute trip. Then when I was arriving to their house, one of them ask me where am I a going since I just passed their house. I showed them the Uber navigation, showing that I was going in the right direction. Anyways I turned around and got to their house and said bye and good night but they just got out without a word. Immediately I said well there goes my perfect rating and sure enough I received a 1 star. My rating dropped to a 4.8 and in the next couple of 100 trips I received a couple of 1 stars more. Not sure from who but there is nothing I can do about it. Now I'm at a 4.81. Oh well, I'm polite and keep my car clean so I'm trying my best to control what I can do. Since I only drive sometimes in the weekends from 10 PM to 2AM. I figured a lot of people forget to rate you anyways since they are tired and just want to get home.

@@ABBAManon Unfortunately every driver gets 1s for no reason. I'm confident there is rarely a time a driver actually deserves a 1. Do I deserve a 3 or a 4 every once in a while if I miss a turn or something? Possibly. But, I've never deserved any 1 that I've received. I always try to make conversation with someone because it's much harder to leave someone a negative rating and much more likely they'd leave me a positive rating and a tip if I simply try to make a friend. I think the key is getting more satisfied customers to leave a rating. Kind of like those bumper stickers on trucks, "How's my driving?" - with a phone number. Only upset people are calling that number. My effort is to change that by over delivering on service.

Great presentation. I do Uber in New York. For me it is hard to maintain a high rating due to passengers who are in a rush getting to their destination. I have to obey all traffic law. Thanks for the compliment! The one thing I'm trying to work on is getting more people to leave ratings. Less than 50% of my riders leave any feedback at all. That is the same issue I am dealing with here in Dallas TX, the vast majority of customers that are happy with the service provided do not take the time to rate or comment but we can always count on that guy that is never happy to leave his 1 Star rating with a long rant about how he or she did not like some small thing that no one else even cares about. As of today 09-29-18 I have over 3700 trips completed and have received a rating by only about 1800 of those trips so less than half of all my riders have given any kind of indication of their satisfaction regardless of what they have said while in my vehicle. If it matters I do have over 1600 Five Star trips.

Bo, that's exactly right. 50% of your satisfied passengers simply get out of the car and forget about you. I think if I'm able to provide enough friendly perks in my car they'll serve as reminders to the passengers to leave ratings for me! I should keep track of the percentage of people who leave ratings for me over the next 100 and make a video on that.

Okay I am a 4.87 driver...pretty good. I DO NOT give out water or candy. People will trash your car with wrappers. What happens if someone takes a sip of the water and puts it back in the pocket. I DO NOT play ragae music. I DO NOT CLEAN the inside of the car every 2 days. I DO NOT have plastic mats. I have the radio on and play pop music and sometimes commercials come on...its funny. I keep the volume on 5. I have nice conversations. I don't ask for tips. I drive a sweet ride. The best advice is be nice to people and you will get good ratings. I don't make eye contact.... I think that is kind of spooky. I don't open doors.

Obviously, we all have our own way of doing things. I drive a Prius so it's definitely not a sweet ride anyone will remember. I try to make up for it by doing the little things. My regular job is customer service based so I totally get how conversation makes everything better. To answer your question about the water, that has happened twice. I only put one water in the back of each seat now so if I hear someone opening a water (90% of people that take them ask, 10% are douches who think everything in life belongs to them and is free) I'll remember to put another one back there. Again twice I've seen a half drunk water back there and I went full rage monster when they were gone. Just means I get to recycle the bottle I guess. I have not had an issue with trash. Occasionally someone will leave a wrapper on the seat, but usually, they just put it in the seatback pocket which is fine.

For the longest I was a perfect 5 up until 500 then I had one asshole lady give me a low-rating because "my cologne was too strong" (it was air freshener 😐). I used to do candy but ppl kept throwing wrappers all over so I stopped. Tbh I get a lot more comments on my ratingsand usually they are paragraphs praising my conversation. I believe conversation is key and it helps that I conversate for a living in my day job.

I wish I would have known about the referral code prior to signing up. I definitely would have used yours. Your video covered it all. Well done. To me it's all common sense, but sadly...a lot of people out there don't have that. So thanks for sharing, hopefully many will follow your lead. Looking forward to more of your videos as I begin my Uber journey.

Ugh.. I'm at 4.98 with 934 rides lol. Never a single bottle of water, no loud obnoxious music, simple questions and conversation, honest opinions when asked for them, no snacks or any of that bs, one Apple charger in the back thats it, if they need to stop somewhere, I will give them 5 or 10 minutes, thats usually a nice tip, sometimes not, but it is what it is. Like I tell my wife, a taxi charges a lot more, and when was the last time a taxi driver gave someone a snack and a bottle of water? We barely make it out here as it is.

For me, I am not into having long conversations with the drivers and more so, when they are too pushy. If it is just a regular Hi and two words i am cool with it. Sometimes people are not in the right mood to be engaging. lol

When it's early in the morning (4am-7am) I usually just shut up and drive after that I just try to gauge passenger interest.
