Love tip #10! - I started building mine 41 years ago, when I bought a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls (Model 1). They are still my front L & R speakers. - Still going strong. Apparently, my wife will bury me in one of the cabinets. - lol

Wait for discounted gear on sale, buy used (store demo or online). Mike is absolutely right. Enjoy the journey. I started my Home Theater Journey in 1995 at the age of 35. I married young and had three boys so as any responsible father I had to take it slow and spend wisely. I started with store demo Klipsch front towers for $600, retailed for $1,200 back in 95'. I already had original Klipsch Heresy I that I bought used in 87'. I've upgraded throughout the years, but Mike's tips are all on the money. Skip to present day (empty-nester), just two years ago I purchased a pair tower speakers that came out in 2015 and retail for 5k, I waited and waited and bought them for 2k. They replaced another pair of towers that had retail for 3k, I bought for 1.5k.

I agree with all of these tips and most importantly enjoying the journey. If you only focus on the end result you are unhappy until you have what you want and once you get it you will not appreciate what it took to get there. Great content Youthman. Stay safe and keep it up.

Great video.I managed to grab those Polk Lsim 707 from adorama last October for 599 each and the 706C center for 399. Was going for an outlaw 5000 amp but waited and realized the best Amp for condo lower level volume is the Parasound A52+ so now the fun of finding one that fits my budget begins. Yes ,the process is way more fun than the destination.

Built my own room, contract out the sheetrock (plasterboard) ran all cables and built the steps, and rear wall. Did insulation and paint myself. Cost $90 K Aus. Gear value about $275K, accumulated over 4 years, mostly ex-demo and s/h . Probably gear cost $130K all up. Still doing some work but mostly done. 225" screen, capable of 116dBa continuous, 4K video projection. 15 seats, space for 6 extra if needed. DIY is for me!

Awesome advice, mate! This is exactly what Budget Audiophile is all about as well, saving that end money so you can do more and enjoy more for less. It's super fun to see you putting out stuff like this! I agree with the DIY thing (as you already know) as that saves SO much money. If you can (or if you know someone that can) build it! Subwoofers and speakers are huge money siphons and if you don't mind going through the numbers and spending a few weeks designing, a few days building/gluing and don't mind making a few mistakes, DIY audio is FAR and AWAY the best way to go! I built a cheap riser out of pallets and I plan on redoing it like yours where I take lumber, measure everything out, cut, insulate, and carpet it. I like how you ran the power through it, that's epic! I'll have to borrow that idea, if you don't mind.

I used to feel the same about tip #5 and it probably is true if you have a company come out and build a dedicated home theater. I reached out to a local company about a quote on a new tv, reciever, and running wires in the walls. The labor was alot at just over $1,000, but they quoted me great deals on the equipment that was cheaper than if I did it all myself.

Nice video man. I really focus on sound over picture, especially if you're just starting out. Speakers and amplifiers will have a much longer shelf life than the latest and greatest display device. If it took me 2 years to save up for my entire system, I'd want to spend good money on the display device last since there are rapidly evolving resolutions, display technology, and color formats. My speakers shouldn't need to be changed out for years to come if done right the first time

I can never buy used because it might be defective. I waited until black friday or end of the year sales to pull the trigger. The only thing I wished I've done differently is to get 2 svs subwoofers. I ended up getting 1 klipsch subwoofer but I will sell that 2 yrs from now. My wife hates the shape of the speakers but loves the sound.

I bught a basic set of used speakers and a dolby atmos capable reciver because I had little money left after buying an Oled-TV but I kept looking on the used market for deals and It is starting to sound real nice. The one thing that improved sound the most was building acustic panels, putting them on the first reflection point and a curtain for the windows in the back.

My brother inlaw spent double on a full klipsch system for a 5.1 and a x2700h. My entire system cost me half the price and I have a 5.2 with a x4700h only new stuff I bought were wires plugs brackets and trunking. he listened to mine for the first time last week and was blown away he couldn't understand how I had spent so little and got much better sound and experience. in my next phase I will have spent 90% of what he has but I will then have a 5.2.5 system with x4700h 1xcrown 2502 with 2xcustom 12 inch infinity kappa subs 500rms each, a mini amp powering 2 in seat transducers and an nvidia shield to manage all my media on hard drive, emulate old ps1 ,ps2,ps3 ,PC ,Nintendo ,sega games as well as stream more free content. I am also currently looking to build my own acoustic panel artwork on a budget that will still see me spending less then my brother in law 4 a system and setup that is probably 10 times better 🤣🤣🤣

In my opinion, buy used item can really be an opportunity when it comes to some specific pieces of your home theater : I'm talking about speakers, amplifiers (dedicated ones, with no processing) and projection screen. Why ? First because those pieces are not evolving that much over the years. Some speakers or amplifiers that are 10 years old are still considered references and are not technologically outdated. Then if you select wisely your product (good features, performaces, and reliability), then you can go for even product that are some years old without any worries (More caution about this for projection screen). And finally, those product are usually stable in your home theatre. If you carefully choose, you may not change those for years (even decades, no kidding). So be patient (like you said, very true), a great deal on a prestigious model that is some years old can really be enjoyable. Whereas this kind of opportunity will not happen that often with electronic (Processor, players etc), because after some years, you may end up with product that are not technologically up to date (Decoding engine, HMDI version etc). So, for electronic items I would rather recommand on the opposite, to change on a regular basis to be up to date and not loose too much at retail.
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. That’s why I said 1-2 yr old models or discontinued items (applies to electronics too).

Some good points however for #8 - I would disagree. Changed over to Kimber Kable speaker wire (4VS - $210 for 2 pairs of 8 foot lengths and a 5 foot for the centre channel) and noticed a difference - more pronounced sound with a better sense of openness.

I'd say another tip is to pick A/V components and speakers that fit within the means of the room that your putting them in... In other words, you don't need a full set of JTR 212rt's in a small/medium size room!
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe so...but then again, we don't need a dedicated theater room either. LOL. Just remember, you do have complete control of the volume knob.
@TerminatorJuice
@TerminatorJuice 4 жыл бұрын
@@Youthman True... But having JTR 212rt's in a small room is like buying a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store! It's cool if you have the disposable income, but it's pretty unnecessary for that application. I mean, what's the point of having speakers that can handle 4,000 Watts if you can only put the volume at 10% before it starts to hurts your ears??? And especially if you are on a budget! Being practical about what size speakers you actually need will leave you with more money to put towards a really nice TV or other components for your room.

If I had the space and money for dedicated home theatre I’d do it in a heartbeat but… let’s be realistic. I have a small apartment living room, 12.5 x10 ft. In that space a 65” 4k tv and my budget Panasonic 5.1 surround sound system will be a great experience. I won’t feel cheated for not having a huge projector screen and the accompanying expensive sound system. Added to that, even this budget, 1000w max, system would have my neighbours pounding on my door in rage if I turned up it to even 50%. 😂

My advice would be if you are planning on spending a considerable amount of money, remodeling or building a dedicated room would be to consult a professional that does home theater work for a living. You don't have to have them do all the work for you, but at least consult with one. If you are handy and do stuff yourself that is great. If not, and you are not sure what you are doing, mabye think really hard about it. I know it sounds like a waste of money but it might not be. I have met and heard of plenty of people that wasted thousands by making simple mistakes or overlooking things that later had to be changed. Or paying for things they probably didn't need. One guy had someone build him a room, paid for electricians and what not to do the work. Ended up he didn't have enough outlets or in the places he thought he would need them. As well as speaker connections. The electrician charged him thousands of dollars to come re do and upgrade the work. That is a costly mistake that might have been avoided by consulting someone or having them do the work instead. I would say that falls into the catagory of making a plan.

Definitely nothing wrong with hiring a home theater consultant if it fits within your budget.

@@Youthman And I am for sure not saying everyone should run out and hire someone to hook up their AVR and tv they got at Best Buy or something lol. I certainly can't afford to hire someone to do work, consult with or calibrate my tv. I was meaning for people that are building a full on home theater with a dedicated room, projector and screen and more high end hardware.
