I think the whole "beat the champ" thing has a lot do with the atrocious judging that occurs in mma. Losing the belt because the judges have a minimal grasp of the fight they just witnessed is nonsense. It's also pushback against the strategy of round-stealing (going hard in the last minute because that's what the judges will actually remember). Also, fans don't tend to feel this way over lopsided fights, only the close ones
@Jcv95
@Jcv95 2 жыл бұрын
It also makes for boring fights. If a champ knows he did enough to win at least 3 rounds he will most likely coast the rest of the way and play it safe. I think JJ perfected this type of strategy and it almost blew up vs Dom

'Beat the champ' mentality is part of why judging is so atrocious. If you were going to have an unwritten rule that benefited anybody (and you shouldn't), it'd be the challenger. It makes more sense to hold the champion to a higher standard.

About that wightcut issue: Those fighters have months of training camp. The reason why some don't make the weightcut is because they try to get away with cutting lots of weight at the last second instead of gradually lowering weight during training camp. That practise also got several fighters into health troubles and cost them and us as fans good fights. So it really needs to go away.

It's crazy to think about the sport evolving where everyone commits at least one "free foul" per fight, because that's just what you do, as part of the strategy. That's probably going to happen, it does in every other sport. Balls and strikes in baseball were put into the rules way back in the day because pitchers would throw "bad balls" on purpose just to make the batter impatient and start swinging at bullshit, so they put a limit on the amount of "bad balls" a pitcher could throw in an at bat, that's why we have balls and strikes now, and the batter gets a walk after 4 balls. So obviously it's not advantageous for a pitcher to throw balls, but they still do, often on purpose. It's just smart baseball, you don't want to throw too many strikes because that gives the batter too many opportunities. A smart pitcher will throw at least 1 out of the strike zone on purpose in almost every at bat, it's just what you do. I suspect we'll see the same thing with eye pokes or fence grabs in the MMA future.

Aljo just didn't help his own popularity with his behavior leading up to that and after.

It would be dumb to deliberately foul your opponent because it's so easy to accidentally do it (eye pokes and groin strikes) so you wouldn't "get your free foul" in on purpose for fear of accidentally fouling again and losing a point

@@smith9157 not in all cases though, in desperation like you just really need a break to recover, or maybe late in a close fight and you haven't had an "accidental foul" yet. Similar to how basketball teams will use fouls on purpose late in the game just to stall for time.

Big props to him for not taking the DQ victory but at the same time, JON JOOONES knows the rules. It would even be good justice for him to have the belt taken. It was no accident. And in this one on one combat sport the impacts of injury and cheating are more than in any other sport. Due to injury potential and how due to the one on one nature it may really change the course of things. And feeling pressured with behaving honorably allows cheaters to get through to you and hold you back while they keep reaping the glory.

I’ve heard that another rule is when you lock in a submission, you wait a second or two before you really cinch it in to give your opponent a chance to tap out. It’s essentially a way to tell your opponent “You’d better tap now or I’m gonna do some real damage.”

@carlvallin7969

It's generally true even for competition, but it's more you pull a 9/10 rather than a 10/10 for 1 second before you go 10/10. Also depends a bit on the submission - If it's a tight Kimura you have the space to give you opponent a chance to tap, while with most armbars you would want to put on the pressure right away.
@idontcareaboutyouropinion8999
@idontcareaboutyouropinion8999 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of submission and it depends on how much you want the finish. If you’re confident you’ll get an RNC, you’ll grind out an RNC. If you’re ripping a heel hook though, you want to rip it because you don’t want them to defend quickly enough. This rule is really only in training.

"Beat the champ", in my in my interpretation means to dominate the champ definitively in every round or finish. There can be no question who won. Judging, regardless of knowledge/skill set/training, is subjective. Every judge sees it differently. 3 judges, 3 potentially entirely different perceptions of the same sequence of events in a 10 sec span let alone a 5 min rounds and 1 min intervals. Not to mention they sit apart so as not to influence each other, so that also creates different angles. The same punch might appear to hit/glance/miss depending on the judges position cage side. Regardless of your thoughts on judging as a whole if you don't finish the champ. You better dominate the champ every single moment of that fight so there can be absolutely no question who won.

I'll explain nr 10: If a championship fight ends with a draw then champion keeps the belt, right? Therefore, the challenger should have more sense of urgency since first minute of a round.
