Graydon Buchleiter I don’t. Because in my opinion it compromises the principle. Not Doing it because it’s helps our planet and it’s beneficial financially, physiologically and mentally but because it’s hip and cool to do zero waste a certain way. Like carrying around a fashionable tote bag as a status symbol not because you don’t need to use a million plastic bags to bag your 5 groceries. Or buying the super expensive “hydro flask” (hip and trendy therma bottle made from California) not because using plastic is harmful and pointless but because it’s a status symbol to own that specific brand of water bottle. And lastly because trends don’t last, they come and go and it’s be nice to see a more gradual, intentional, widespread change in attitude and practices from the entire general public. But hey a trend is better than nothing I suppose.

piotr monn sometimes because they do it for the wrong reasons then end up doing it wrong; so the end result is subverted anyways. That was the point I’m trying to make. If you don’t know why you’re using a reusable bag, you end up buying more just for the high fashion which defeats the environmental purpose in the first place. If you don’t know why it’s important to have a reusable water bottle. You end up buying whatever’s trendy like the Californian brand hydro flask. And then discarding it moments later for another one. Or you shop thrift stores because the aesthetic is cool. But you still binge and trash these clothes excessively coz they’re practically free; which again, defeats the purpose. Or they understand plastic material is bad but they don’t recycle their steel, aluminum, metal, and glass containers properly and end up throwing it in the trash anyways and it all ends up in landfill. Those who don’t do it for the right reasons are less likely to understand why they even do what they do, and run the risk of just making things worse. In my opinion. Of course no matter the intentions I’m glad it’s being done either way, trendy or not, but people really can make it worse by doing it for the wrong reasons because they simply don’t understand why. Edit: although on the other hand, the trend can be a gateway for deposed exploration into the movement. It could go either way I guess. Although imo, the 1st thing I mentioned has a higher risk

In Australia, they have banned plastic bags at all grocery stores so you have to pay to get a reusable bag

you shouldn’t use metal straws because they can kill you. ( look it up) i personally use silicon straws from amazon. :)

If you really want paper books, the public library is perfect because every book is technically being reused over and over again.

I really like your approach of focusing on doing your best instead of putting down people who aren't doing the same thing as you. A lot of greater good movements like sustainability and animal rights lose traction bc of folks who bash people who don't know any better. It's better to say "I do xyz because I want the small things I do to be good for the world" instead of "you use plastic water bottles? You eat meat? You're disgusting"

I think a lot of videos about zero waste have this same approach. People who respond like you do often times feel guilty that they don’t do anything or feel like any video about changing your ways is an insult to them somehow.Every vegan, zero waste, environmentally conscious videos have a post exactly like this.

I was going to comment the same thing but you said it perfectly! I’m trying to live more sustainably, but I’m so nervous about getting involved with new people because I’ve had some really bad experiences. It’s so important to remember that every little bit helps.

maybe because of the beewax. Like I read in one of my science papers (it is on researchgate and on a few other places) that the beewax is a problem. It is not normal waste but chemical waste and they don't know what to do with them. We even talked about it in our chemistry classes since we all are engineers/scientists. Kinda complicated to explain my school xD

@@nomoredream7689 I totally was concerned about that. Thanks- so many better alternatives- just use glass containers/silicone lids; no ned to be perfect but this has had such a huge reach we need to examine even the seemingly better choices- critical to do so.

@@Ambrosha385 Yeah, I've been concerned about beeswax as well, so I just put my leftover food in other containers I have lying around. No need to buy beeswax when you have all these old pasta/honey/coconut oil glass jars chilling in the pantry hah.

I'm a teen and trying to be as zero waste and environmentally friendly as I can! I just ordered my first set of bamboo utensils including chopsticks, a straw, and a baggie to hold it all! Thanks for the video, very helpful, I'll continue trying to do the most I can at this time in my life

YES! yes to ecosia and yes to spreading awareness about reducing waste!!! 'zero waste' is just this ultimate goal that isn't really attainable in todays consumerist society .without removing yourself from it, so making small changes and just reducing the use of single use items like plastic bags can shift the way we think about waste and make it a general discussion instead of a tiny youtube 'zero waste' niche.

Jade Evens yes! It’s not easy to go completely zero waste, but ANY effort towards reducing waste helps a ton if we all work together at it! I’m a fan of “go slow and you will go far” - I still create waste but I’m learning to be more mindful of it!

umm a lot of people can't go zero waste due to health issues and needing life saving medicine that comes in plastic. Such as diabetes supplies, asthma medication for nebulizers and if you have to use a vaporizer you have to buy distilled water so you don't get that hard water dust if you live in an area where you have hard water.

unicorn I was thinking about this but actually my pharmacy reused my bottle after I spoke to them about it. Also the asthma inhalers have metal tanks that can be interchanged. And lastly, a lot of distilled water bottles can be refilled. So we can reuse plastic as well. It's all up to the agencies, facilities and places around us to support people who are trying to use less waste :)

That's cool that the pharmacy reused the medicine bottle. Asthma medicine for nebulizer's come in plastic vials that the measured dosage is stored in until use after putting the liquid medicine in the plastic vial is tossed not everyone can use inhalers. And hospitals and urgent care can't re use the tubing or the plastic mouth piece due to sanitary reasons it's so sad that many life saving things are made from plastic that can't be recycled. :( As for Distilled water bottles those can be recycled if your area recycles that type of plastic the number that's printed on the bottom. Some tips from an ex Whole Foods employee (me haha): Please use the shopping carts or baskets made available to you and not your reusable bag to carry unpaid for goods while shopping. Using reusable produce bags is totally cool but full-sized shopping bags is how a lot of people shop lift so it's best to avoid it while shopping and save them for when you have paid for your items. When you use reusable produce bags and jars for items it will save you a lot of time if you record the tare of each item. You can go to the front the first time us use a reusable item and get the tare number from a cashier and label it. That will save you and the cashier so much time when it comes to future trips!

I find that comment a little silly. I worked in retail myself for a full year and use reusable bags when shopping. Not only is it (to some extent) partly our job as a cashier to spot shoplifters at the register but it is above all security's job to lookout for potential shoplifters and check them out on the cameras if possible. We might not catch shoplifters after their first steals but we usually do the next times as we saw them do it before on camera after the fact. Ultimately, if a shoplifter is never caught, we will most likely never even notice it as it will not drastically impact the store's revenue. And to be honest, A a huge majority of shoplifters I've encountered aren't the eco friendly type and do not even use eco friendly bags: they try hiding stuff in their bagpacks, pockets or even in the store's trolly.

If you prefer reading paper books you could go to a library and only buy the books you really really like! (This is what works for me.)

This is exactly what I do. I live at my local libraries (one near my home, one near my work). Think of how much $$ you save by getting stuff from the library (which you have to return...less clutter).

This is what I do too! I love the feel of a paper book in my hand for relaxing, and I've always been a fan of my local library - but I go paperless for my textbooks whenever possible. My notes become much easier to manage and I can’t bring myself to mark a physical book, so I can digitally highlight important passages. It's usually way cheaper too.

I wanted to add: Cloth pads or period panties are also great swaps for traditional pads & tampons!! At least you are aware or our environment and the fact that Earth is in danger. I'm very sad to see adults avoiding this issue, but they grew up like that and they were taught to do so by society...which is sad... But at least we now have a new promising generation that will hopefully realize that Earth is the only planet we have 🙏

As far as books go, using your local library is great! Not only are you supporting your library, but Libraries always have tons of copies of books and they want people to check them out!

i wish this was the case but my library has a horrible selection. not books that id wanna read lol. also doesnt help that i prefer my books in english and majority of the books arent in english since its not the first language in my country

A bunch of places are switching from plastic straws, which is great, but they are replacing them with paper straws which is degradable but also speeds up deforestation which is another massive problem, so I think while the change is a step forward it’s also a step back, and as she said there are other straw options

Definitely. I met this guy in Seattle last month who’s making glass straws. I bought one and I use it quite a lot. It also has a lifetime guarantee which is always nice.

honestly I dont get the straw problem. they're not necessary at all for most of the population except disabled people, who can just buy a reutilizable straw.

I really struggle to enjoy ebooks, however I've been buying second hand books instead of new ones, which is not only great in terms of reusing, but is so much cheaper than buying from the bookstore!

Something I’ve noticed people don’t seem to think of: If you’re flying somewhere, you can get an empty water bottle through the security check and fill it up in a water fountain afterwards. Saves money and plastic.

That would only work if your water bottle has a filtre built in. I would never drink water from a random sink, and water fountains are (unfortunately) quite hard to find nowadays

I know this is a year later, but I use Tree Hugger Cloth Pads. It’s a family owned business in Canada (the mom started it in her home because she was allergic/sensitive to something in disposable pads I believe) and her husband joined her when it started growing and they’re fantastic. They have multiple materials (cotton, bamboo, and minky) and sizes and colors to choose from, and they plant a tree with every single pad they sell. They also sell more natural laundry stuff too. I highly recommend!! Much better to support a small business rather than an amazon company I don’t know about, in my opinion:)

I suggest a 6th R (not sure where on that list it should go)...RESIST! Contact your city/county/state representatives and tell them you support initiatives to reduce single use plastics and biodegradable alternatives. You can also talk to your local grocery stores about offering less/no plastic in their packaging.

I just stumble on your channel and love your ideas. I try my part in going zero waste and will definately check out the search engine you recommend. I do have a question about the bees wax wrappers. According to my knowlege it take the bees 7 times the amount of nectar to make one kilogram of wax to one kilogram of honey. It just seems unfair to the hard working bees that's already in a struggle for survival. Why nog rather go for glass containers?

In regards to bringing your own jar, be careful: in the grocery store i worked at, we had predetermined tare weights built into the software of the cash register. MEANING, the cashier may not be able to accommodate for your heavy jar because its weight is not in the system. So, you may be overcharged for product. This is especially costly when picking up nuts and spices.

For books, i personally love the feeling of traditional books and with e-books I can't relax to the same level, so what I do is go to a local library and just read there, you really don't have to buy the books or you can just rent them for a period of time and when they are no longer famous (in some places, not my case though) they normally donate them to charity or children.

I really enjoyed your tips!! Another tip is to buy secondhand products such as used cars, used clothes, etc. Buying new clothes and buying into fast fashion creates so much waste especially when trends go out of style so quickly. so buying things that have already been used (of course this doesn’t apply to every thing) is another tip that is great for the environment!

I have been environment concious all my life because my parents are too. I would like to add some points 1. while switching to sustainable products we often end up buying such products which often come in low grade plastic wraps. So please make sure that the packaging is eco-friendly too. 2. Do not throw away your old plastic things- only switch when you have to. If you already have them keep using them until they are worn out. Simply throwing them away is also creating plastic waste 3. We usually end up buying sustainable products online- which takes a lot of packaging and transportation. Instead shop at local market or maybe make some out of the home items we already have. Or opt for dedicated websites which also take care that the packaging is eco-friendly too. It might be a little expensive than it normally would be but spending a few bucks shouldn't matter if the thought is in the right direction. 4. Not all products sold on amazon or such websites are eco-friendly as they claim. Yes the product might be eco-friendly but the process of making them might not be. And the sellers dupe people into thinking it's eco friendly because people will buy it. 5. One option for cereals/grains if you do not want to carry bulky glass jars is making small cloth pouches out of old clothes at home. These are also light weight and will also save you from the hassle of weighing the jars. Thank you. I hope someone finds it to be useful. :)

making your products is much cheaper than buying premade. This will not only reduce your waste, but also save you money. I have to assume your are already purchasing this like DO and toothpaste. Instead, make your own out of regular household items.

Since you're still young and likely living at home with your parents, try and take them on this journey with you. Get your family involved in being aware of the waste they create, and together you can all work on making less of it. Maybe your family can start recycling or con posting as a household, or you can remind your parents to bring in the reusable bags every time they go grocery shopping. You can also request certain sustainable items as gifts for your birthday or whenever, or instead of other things. Ask for a sustainable toothbrush next time yours needs replacing, ask for a menstrual cup or a reusable water bottle or a kindle for your birthday. Plus all the little things you can do. Bring bring a metal fork or spoon from home to eat at school instead of using the plastic stuff, refuse plastic straws whenever you eat out, try to avoid things that are single-use or individually packaged. A little bit goes a long way. Just be conscious and do your best, and maybe your family will join you :)

When i was your age i started going out to eat a lot with friends at fast food places, so if you start doing that maybe bring your own reusable cup/utensils. When you go shopping bring a purse/bag that will fit what you bought in it (if you're just buying something for yourself). Also when i was younger I got my parents to stop buying water bottles for a while (they started to again but I can't stop them, they're my parents)

Number 10 is a huge mistake, that kind of e-readers are more polluting than books because of the components, the COLTAN, the bateries... Is much better use paper books because paper is the easiest recycling material and one of the most recycled in the world 😄

@@robertagomesrp actually ebooks vs books has ben researcher about, "Books from an environmental perspective" by ,Åsa Moberg, Clara Borggren & Göran Finnveden, and whilst ebooks can be less consuming, it is only if you use it often, have it in a low setting and it is produced with enviroment-friendly components. Wht is the biggest fault in printed books were actually transportation of the books, so if you walk instead to drive to the library it is still a valid option:)

I know using acrylic is a better option than a single-use straw, but acrylic is an extremely hard material to breakdown. It has its pros and cons. On the plus side, it will last you much longer so you don't have to repurchase as often but in the long run you'll still be contributing to the plastic epidemic. (I'm currently in school for environmental science & sustainability please don't come for me in the comments). I'm just glad someone is using their platform to spread a MUCH needed wake up call to many.

I've tried most of the original series! I don't feel comfortable using the heavy ones on their own for my heaviest days, but they're wonderful on light days and for preventing leaks in general. They are absolutely worth a shot, even if you end up needing to use them with cups/tampons etc.

lia la Fun fact, sometimes people recycle ♻️ things incorrectly! Some states only recycle some plastics ( you can see a number on the product that will tell you). Also, some yogurt 🍦 cups are recyclable but it’s contaminated because some people didn’t wash the product out. And the #1 reason why waste ends up in the ocean 🌊 is Littering! So if you see waste(even if it wasn’t yours) try and put in the correct area!

its easy to say all this stuff like "get jars, get bags, wooden toothbrushes, technology over books" but they are all so much more expensive! The economically viable one is the cheapest to make, and worst for the environment, so this all really isnt our fault. Companies and govements should be innovating new ideas to make essintial products more viaable, but great for the enviroment too.

initially when you get started, maybe. but you end up saving a bunch of money in the long run! as long as you’re willing to give these companies your money just because it’s “cheaper”, they won’t change because they have no reason to. it’s like buying any good quality item: it may be a bit more up front but it’ll last so much longer and save you more money in the long run, since you aren’t wasting your money on cheap, disposable things CONSTANTLY. save money and the environment ☺️

By the time you spend let’s say five bucks a month on straws, one or two metal ones can last forever! So it really is cheaper to go zero waste. And companies won’t stop until people stop buying them.

Watching this with my sister, when we got to the pad and tampon section she said “just use a diva cup!”. I am not a woman and I know that a diva cup is not for everyone, but it is definitely an alternative to consider!

Toto Jaede I know they can be intimidating or difficult to use for a lot of people, so another good option is washable cotton sanitary pads. Places like Etsy sell them and they come in all sizes and colours.

OhLookAWoodenSheep kind of, but my hometown switched and made people pay for plastic bags only a few years ago so. I also read about plastic cutlery in the comments more than once, which surprised me. Like i almost never come in contact with those.

I get reusable bags from fairs because they don't want your bag to rip when carrying all that stuff. You can also put a laundry basket in the back of your car so when you go grocery shopping you don't use bags and can put it in the basket. When you get home it's a single trip.

You don’t exactly throw books away. Also they are Bio degradable, but that would take a lot of time in a shelf. I think electronic devices create more waste than books. I mean calculate production waste in, packaging, electricity (especially in the US nowhere near green energy, so that creates a lot of waste), and then the device itself

imagine if electronical device is 10. and a "traditional" book is 1. soo if u put a lot of book in your phone, it still value as 10. you can put more than ten books in it. and the value still 10. it is different when u have 20 of "traditional" books. the value is 20. it is true that phone is one of the biggest pollutant, but.. life cycle of a phone is 3 or 4 years or more(my phone is 3years old now). soo you can reduce your paper waste in that time. and also phone can do a lot of things beside to read e-books.

But who likes to read on a phone. You could also go to a library, we have public bookshelves in town, where you can bring your book, leave it there and take another. Obviously: don't just buy books, read them once and then forget about them, lend them to others or swap them. And I mean still, most people get a new phone every other year, most likely do not read 20 books in that time. I mean yes: A phone can be used for a lot of things nowadays, but you need to build servers, put cables in the ground and everything so they work. Also: Electricity, book does not need that. (yes there is production, but compared to a phone, also last much longer. We have books at home that are a 100 years old) So I´d say: you are better off just buying a book, than using your phone an x amount of time more and needing to fuel it more because of reading. (sorry for the language mistakes, english is not my mother tongue and I have a headache currently)

I have been vegan for about year (mainly for the animals but also because of the environment), but it doesn't feel like enough. I know plastic is bad but my mind just ignores how bad it truly is, same as it was with animal agriculture before I went plant based. Now I want to start and reduce my plastic waste as well. I work at a grocery store, and it makes me sick thinking about how many bags; I, one cashier in one town in one country, have to give out every day. It’s so easy to bring reusable bags. I just don’t understand why people don’t bring there own.

Carly Smith because they're not used to it and plastic bags are readily available. In my hometown, many stores stopped giving out plastic bags for free so you'll have to pay for them. They're obviously not expensive but it makes people think about whether they actually need one. This goes for supermarkets, drugstores and clothing stores, although many clothing stores just switched to paper.

I don't know if you are aware of the current situation in Mexico. The air is filled with contamination and you can't breathe properly, your eyes hurt, you fill your skin covered in contamination and you feel soooo miserable. Classes are cancelled and is recommend not to go out. It's so horrible being in this conditions and I really hope people start going zero waste and reducing their negative impact in the world. This situation made me aware of the destruction we cause and I really love that you make videos about this, thanks to people like you my faith in humanity has been restablished, keep the good work

Siobhan Smith I used to use menstrual cups and I loved it but felt nervous every time I changed it, so I switched to thinx period panties that Aileen mentioned in her period products video. Very easy, stress free, and surprisingly comfortable! I have three and hand wash and rotate every morning and night...

Just a tiny tip regarding toothbrushes; for those who don't want to buy the bamboo ones or can't get them anywhere, Curaprox accepts used toothbrushes of their brand so basically they recycle what you buy from them!

Great video, but just want to point out that for tip number 3, unfortunately most mainstream grocery stores do not have a system allowing you to tare your jar weight even if they have a bulk section, so a better option would be bringing small reusable bags that pretty much weigh nothing to get some of those items like nuts or beans:)
