One more comment. You both play music we could actually learn and be comfortable playing while learning good technique. So many other sites especially guitar sites play such complex music it actually detracts from hearing the nuances of the instrument. Phil’s choices were, as you Brits say “ brilliant”. 👍

Thanks guys, great showcase, as you progressed up the price scale I think the sopranos justified their increase in price as the sound just got so much nicer to my ears. Great playing Phil, Hats off to you guys and have a great week.

You are right, it was about time a range of sopranos were featured. Still happens to be my favourite ukulele size. Liked both Millar and Uma in the more affordable range. I must admit that the Kiwaya loses out on the Kanile’a and Koaloha, in my opinion. Maybe Phil and Alex can join forces on Patreon, they have so much to offer.

That travel kala in sound is up there with the more pricey ukes played in this video.

Loved the warmth of the KoAloha and the percussive sound of the Islander. They all had their own character and pleasant sounds. Two notes. My experience with two bamboo ukes from another brand (looking like they came from the same factory as the Kala) was not good. One arrived with two splits in the body and the other split within a week. Nicely built but very much in need of good humidity. Second, Phil has such a nice style but he looks more comfortable with a tenor in his hands😊. Personally I love sopranos for exactly the reasons you cite. Good stuff.

We have seen a lot of Aklots with splits as well... To date we have not had one QC issue with the Kala Bamboo's and we have probably sold 50-60.

Thank you, guys, for doing this video on sopranos! Really enjoyed it and will check it out again when I'm ready to upgrade. I own the Kala SSTU-S thin-body soprano and love the size. Not a fan of the strings, though. I bought Martin M600 strings but am nervous to change them myself for the first time. Is it weird to put a low-G string on a soprano? If not, do you know if a low-G would fit on the Kala thin-body without having to widen the nut slot? And which brand would be thin enough to fit best? Sorry for all the questions, but any info on them would be great. Thank you!

If you used a 16u Aquila string you should be fine.

@@SouthernUkuleleStore - Thank you. That's the one I'll get, then. Apparently, low-G on a soprano IS weird. A search for 16u only comes up for tenor. And really, no brands come up for soprano low-G in my search. Oh well, I'll still enjoy my high-G.

@@e.castlerock8454 It's OK to put a low-G string on a soprano. If you mainly do finger picking, a low-G string will make the higher 3 strings sound much richer by providing sympathetic resonance, not to mention the expanded lower end. It may sound a bit boomy and overpowering on strumming though, it depends on the string and how you play. You could use a generic guitar D string to try it out first, no nut widening is required.

The nut slot on the average Soprano does need a bit of widening if you use something as heavy as a .030 wound string. Its the reason I recommended the Aquila above.

@@stanleysze - Thank you for all that info. I didn't know that about fingerpicking and strumming on a soprano with a low-G. I'll keep that in mind as I continue to learn. I'm not fast enough at fingerpicking yet, so for now at least, I better stick with high-G.

The Kala BmBs is it more temperamental for temperature changes? Example: airconditioned 80-83 degree inside to 104-110 degree Fahrenheit outside? On my U bass I was constantly retuning when switching environments. I was wondering what havoc it would cause on a bamboo body?

No idea I'm afraid... we are in the wrong climate to have a handle on this kind of thing.
