Widow Agatha Ando learns to laugh again in the decade since Super Typhoon Yolanda smashed into the central Philippines, killing more than 6,000 people and leaving millions homeless.
Ten years on, the family's mass grave is one of the few visible reminders of the devastation in Tacloban, the capital of Leyte province. Tacloban bore the brunt of Yolanda's fury and had to be rebuilt almost from scratch.

My wife was there when it happened. I thought she was dead for 4 days. We hav been back several times since. I agree with those who don’t want to move away from the sea- they need it for fishing. The relocation sites don’t have jobs for people, or land to grow crops and some don’t have water supplies either.

Learning from the past? In what way does the approved causeway project in Cancabato bay represent that learning from the past that they say? The causeway project threatens the very mangrove ecosystems that protect the tacloban coastline from tidal upwellings. it is far more stable and sustainable than solid concrete being put as "wave deterrents". Over the years, the concrete will continuously corrode which will entail additionally funding for maintenance. However, in the case of the mangroves, they are self-sustaining systems that will provide not only an ecological boost to the surrounding environment but also economical benefits to the coastal communities of Tacloban. If anything, the way that such a reclamation project has even come to pass is a glaring indication that the local govt of Tacloban has learned nothing from the past. Ayusin niyo yan.

Tacloban literally has both... The amount of mangrooves here are lined the same was as the barriers made from concrete. The only notable sign of difference is the fact that these two are placed on separate areas. Never seen in one place. Palo has concrete barriers yet the ones across them have Mangrooves its weird.

You are not an expert to say any of this. Land reclamation and concreted causeways are solutions made around the world. Japan has plenty.

you're missing my point. i've never said anything about completely dismissing land reclamation/concreted pathways as viable solutions to reinforcing our coastlines. in some situations they do present themselves as the most optimal counter against tidal upwellings but in the case of Tacloban, the bioprotection offered by the mangroves will be a more worthwhile investment than mere concrete walls. not to mention the biodiversity boost that it will provide to the local fishermen especially with Leyte supplying close to 40% of the total fishing produce of the entire region (Magazine Agriculture, 2020). i may not be an expert when it comes to any of this but as a citizen of Tacloban City, i know for a fact what the causeway project means for the environment and for the safety of its encompassing communities.
