Great video Parker. Long time subscriber. Much of my channel revolves around Dolby Atmos and Home Theater Tours with Dolby Atmos systems. It’s great to see some of the behind the scenes of what it takes to get the Dolby Atmos mix into a Home Theater. Keep up the great work.

When it comes to Atmos, I think the best setup is to have the downward firing ceiling speakers instead of just the front two height speakers.

I personally think four height speakers pointing towards ones skull is the way to go. When one hears sound coming from above the sound is usually off in the distance first! Therefore wouldn't it be better to go with hight channels. If nothing else for the bigger scale of sound!

Great to see an actual walkthrough of sound mixer's room. It tells a lot about why surround sound varies significantly between movies. I would like to offer my two cents though. The reason the Fathom J12 felt "tighter" than the 13 inch is due to the bass frequencies that the bigger sub is capable off. ULF reproduction and perception varies considerably as you go down the frequency. For example, 15Hz will sound "slower" while 30Hz will sound "tighter" and "faster." It has nothing to do with subs. I wish sound mixers used more LFE in the movies rather than terminate it at just 25-30Hz. I apologize for my unsolicited opinions.

Great video. Question: what do you think about the Barefoot gear? i eval’d a couple different levels of their monitors, their MM12’s and their MasterStack units a couple years ago. At that time I found their high frequencies to be a bit shrill and unnatural and the mids not capable of a natural, open sound when presented with pristine recordings. They seemed like great modern bass-heavy, compressed dynamics music monitors, but barely above average for symphonic, powerful open vocals or complex string recordings (to name a few). Have they advanced yet, as I have heard people speak very favorably about them? I am a bit spoiled, as I listen to a lot of live un-amplified music, and do a lot of 2fs and beyond DSD recordings with Sanken Chromatics, Neumann M149 dual capsule tube mics and the like. A basic check I do to validate monitors is how well they fare compared to live, Ocean Way HR4S’s or even Focal 11 series that we sometimes use for ABX. The Barefoot mons fared about average then, but they had only just been released; so I am wondering if they’re worth a second look now, given all the seemingly satisfied users.

Really cool, but there needs to be different post audio for theatrical or for home audio. Most people watch a movie on a regular TV at home and I personally am sick and tired of riding the volume on my TV for everything I watch, it’s either too loud or too low. I think that if it’s for television mixers should listen to the audio coming out of a regular TV speakers after you do your fancy Atmos mix. That way you know what the true levels are. I’m always cursing the sound guy when I watch a movie

GTFOH.. lol We all know what the true levels are since we have ............ Levels and standards. Movies are mixed for theaters or killer systems with tons of dynamic range. You're tv or receiver or set top box should have a dynamic range compressor. Use it.. Your cursing someone because it seems you don't know how to use what you got or you got gear from 1980.
@willvazquez3218
@willvazquez3218 2 жыл бұрын
@@godboy159 Exactly. And this guy is mixing sound for little movies that will never get theatrical. Not only that, they are super low budget movies that will 99.9% be watched by people on their home TV with the the built in speakers, that don't have the dynamic range. So now you're asking the viewer to conform to your crappy mix by having to do special things to their TV. I've tried this and it still doesn't work well. The guy here is mixing subtle sounds on super fancy speakers with dynamic range that will get lost on any home TV. Now maybe he is aware of this and compensating for it. He may be a great post mixer, I'm just saying that the majority of Hollywood movies' audio suck on home TV.

Yeah that’s a great system! I believe that’s the model that Richard Devine has. Blackbird has the ATC’s in their atmos room which is stunning. @@ThatAudioGuy Thanks for taking the time to reply! I was using genelec and yamaha (2 way monitor) since 1998 and now I want to upgrade to a (3 way monitor) permanent 11.2. set for the next few years but I keep running into advice to go for the Neumann / and other brands since are better specs for my symphonic/epic orchestra work. I am also very curious about what makes the other users to click with certain brands/sound. I saw that Vintage Kings are in the US. I am based in the Netherlands and looking online for someone that had experienced and compared 2 or several brands and can tell the difference since I am also very open to change my preference even if my ears are trained with Genelec and Yamaha but my research time is also running out :)
@Jonathan_Wick
@Jonathan_Wick 2 жыл бұрын
ATC is the way to go over Genelec and really any other brand for a 3 way monitor. The midrange dome driver opens up a world of insight into your music. It’s an ATC specific design, and not all dome midranges provide the same benefits that ATC’s do. It’s capable of going all the way down to 380hz which makes it an amazingly capable driver, across a wide frequency band. Their drivers also use a “super linear” design, allowing for incredibly low distortion. They really do across the entire frequency band sound much more accurate than any other brand. They are not flattering monitors though, and you will hear the issues with your mix front and center. However ultimately, whatever your ears prefer :)

As a fim composer I grab my head literally weekly, how they CANNOT hear that all sound comes from the center.....I guess it is an AVID Media composer flaw... probably all the audio files they grab , are put automatically onto a mono channel, panned center, or the stereo waves are split and panned.... whatever the reason is, it is cathastrophic trend....

Dolby Atmos = Ambisonic 1st order to 2nd order panning. Invented and trademarked by Michael Gerzon in the early 70's. The patent was released a few years back and has been adopted under the hood of every major object based panning and localization software to come out since. Including Dolby Atmos who in fact ran a disinformation campaign against ambisonics for the last 50 years as it was superior to what they had developed and brought to market in the 70's, (quadraphonics) and their 5.1 and up amplitude based panning schemes. With a little reading one can find plenty of resources explaining the mechanisms and set up for Ambisonic panning and you will find that it can be encoded to work with any type of speakers set up including, Stereo,5.1, 7.1, and any number of higher order speaker set ups outlined in the Ambisonic white papers online. Dolby Atmos is in fact Ambisonics panning that has been encoded to work in a 5.1 speaker setup with added Height channels and ambience side fill channels or in other words an irregular speaker set up.

It may be just me, but if I'm the only one watching a movie and I'm sitting in the center, I prefer to turn the center channel off and use just the main L +R for the vocal mix (preferably still stereo). I find the phantom imaging from standard stereo much more realistic than having the vocals physically coming out of a point in the center. But for multiple viewers, a center channel is the best. Great system and thanks for the tour!
