What a great person he is, unfortunate that his support worker made assumptions about how his family would be feeling, and to downplay his accomplishments and goals saying they are just "minor" things really shows her inexperience in supporting people. She needed to encourage him and tell him how massive his accomplishments are because they are huge! Aside from her inexperience, he really did well on his own merits. Well done Ethan!! 😊

I respectfully disagree. I thinkshe done a great job and gave some solid advice, told him straight and didnt sugar coat anything. He even admitted his family wants to see change him, she helped him realise its gna take more then just getting a job and a licence, she acknowledged that yes those things are good but they are minor there are more important things to work on such as building resilience and applying things hes learning from counselling and becoming emotionally stable. At the end of the day those are the tools needed to not only get a licence but to keep a licence and a job.

@rbruv890 Thank you for sharing your perspective. While I respect your view, I believe it is crucial to highlight why celebrating even the smallest accomplishments of our rangatahi is so important. Our young people often face significant challenges, particularly those who have been through the justice system. Every step they take towards bettering themselves and their lives is a monumental achievement. When we downplay these accomplishments, we risk diminishing their motivation and self-worth. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool that can bolster their confidence and encourage them to continue striving for success. When a support worker acknowledges these "minor" achievements as significant, it reinforces the idea that progress, no matter how small, is valuable. This can inspire our rangatahi to set higher goals and work even harder towards their aspirations. On the other hand, downplaying their efforts can have a detrimental effect, making them feel undervalued and less likely to pursue further growth. Ethan's journey is a testament to his resilience and determination. It is essential that those in support roles recognize and celebrate these victories, providing the encouragement needed to build a positive and productive future. Well done to Ethan for his incredible progress-his accomplishments he has made ARE on his own merits and are indeed massive and deserving of recognition.

Awesome way to move forward.. if you want a really simple life hack maybe try this (or something like it) : take up running or trail running and if you enjoy it set little goals within it (e.g 1/2 marathon etc). why its so cool is that its cheap to do and alcohol and drugs dont mix with it at all. i use to hang out with my mates getting on the p1ss etc but i grew out of it and it wasnt really me so i took up running. no late ngihts cause i am up running early (made new mates) and would have just as much fun taking the p1ss out of my running mates as with my drinking mates. but apart from the fun element there is loads of other cool stuff like nature / well being / stress manager / fitness / health etc.. moved away from getting on a p1ss when i was about 32. now 56 and i still go out and run the trails (and mountain bike a lot too). my life is very cool thanks to the most simple stuff.

Put his mind to learning something about programming or something else where the trajectory now faces upward and i think he's in a good place to only learn the good things and things that work for whatever it is because his path isn't spiralling down anymore. I look more European than him and it is not until lady's exactly like her realise I can fluently speak te Reo that I get respectful eye contact and respect. She was right I think in saying it is the permanent change in attitude and behaviour worth more than any possible temporary job or piece of paper.
