A BBC North East and Cumbria project. 100 people. 100 years. What made 2012 an important year?
Each person featured in this film was born in a different year between 1912 and 2011. They were all asked one simple question: "why was 2012 important to you?" See 100 years of human life compressed into 7 minutes.
The film features well-known faces, including gold-medal winning Olympians Kat Copland and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, 2012, Josef Craig as well as singers Joe McElderry, Graeme Danby and Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior, alongside less well-known people from the North East and Cumbria.
The music was performed by the English Philharmonic Orchestra, produced by Andy Bell, and composed by Benjamin Till.
The film was produced by Nell Gordon.

I lost My Father this year and I found this very comforting, I am passing it on instead of Christmas card. The music is lovely.

I heard the sad news today that Mary Ross, our 95 year old in this film, has died. She was wonderful and sparky and I'm sure she'll be very badly missed by all her friends and family members. RIP, Mary. You saved our bacon!

fab vid and love what you have done with it my daughter was number 11 and yep she made me proud and brung a tear to my eye seeing her in the short film well done everyone who took part

I hope you will caption this so that I may share it with my friends who have hearing difficulties or auditory processing difficulties. Adding captions will give many more people access to your lovely project.

Beautifully shot indeed . Well done. I liked the diversity! Never quite understand why someone wishes to put someone down when you try and do something positive and not try and offer to help or provide a solution as Milly does. Sure we live in multicultural society. Next time I can point you point in different directions. Judy has an interesting point regarding adding captions as a number of different themes already emerging from the messages and there for the taking. Continue success Ben..

Hey there Gurpal. You raise a very interesting question about multicultural communities. Two responses. Firstly, the make up of the BBC Cumbria/ North east region is largely white, as reflected in the film, and secondly, the BBC and I can only work with those who put themselves forward to take part in projects like this.

Hi Benjamin. Great film, really enjoyed it. Regarding the question of how to increase engagement with non-white communities - perhaps if you were to do any similar projects in the future, you could approach some local organisations and involve key people in the project from the start, they will have access to groups and communities that may not be so welcoming to you.

Great video good luck however other communities other than Caucasian massively underrepresented, maybe because I am from South East and things are different in South East England than in North West England. Maybe try for a wider audience and more diversification in 2013.

...I struggle to engage (particularly Asian) members of non-white communities for these projects, even in London. There seems to be a lack of interest or possibly even a mistrust. If you know any way in which these problems could be addressed, I'd love to hear your thoughts. It would be great to be able to engage more members of non-white communities, but I'm afraid you're making things a little bit over simplistic if you think the answer is as simple as to just "include more."
