100 FISH in 4 HOURS - The BEST DRY FLY small stream ever. part 16

I'm backpacking into a remote stream in Colorado that was full of browns, rainbows and brook trout in part 16 of the 2-month road trip out west. I wasn't sure what I'd be fishing for or what weight rod to bring and honestly got lost trying to find the trail. But a guy walking in the area helped me find the trail. He also said it wasn't a highly used trail and not completely clear. I made my way up a partially cleared trail to fish what would be an amazing stream...I've only shared a small portion of the video from the trip...so many fish! The day was short as monsoon season was starting and thunderstorms developed every afternoon. But it was also packed with fish willing to take a dry fly.
I'm living in my truck bed camper for 2 months and road tripping through New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. See the entire series on my channel or other parts below....

Isn’t it marvellous to see comments from brother anglers all over the world , and perhaps there are sisters watching as well? Every time I visit the stream I fish say out loud “good morning Izaac” because Izaac Walton is watching all of us , and is the De facto saint of the fisherman of the world , he was an all round angler but also loved to catch the trout of seventeenth century England , and had early fly tackle to do it as well. An interesting man who lived in dangerous times, The English Civil War. Bless you all , already looking forward to the season in 2022, time to overhaul my equipment, regrettably the season in England is now virtually over for this year. These American wild streams are wonderful.

I wish I had more time too but I will be back lol! Wish I could upload longer vids but my rural town doesn't have the internet speeds...a vid in the 17 min range takes me about 8-10 hrs to load. One of the reasons I didn't do yt sooner was the slow internet speeds.. 2yrs ago a 10 min vid took 18 hrs to load!

I have been simply astounded by the effort, time, videography and editing that you’ve put into this epic series. These high-quality fisheries you’ve managed to uncover have been a thrill to experience vicariously. I am probably halfway through this series but I’m certain I will watch them all - and probably repeatedly to get me through the winter doldrums. A great little stream. There has to be plenty for them to feed on because of their numbers and the fact that they appear so healthy. I am willing to bet that, because the Browns are predominant, there are several specimens hanging around that are pushing twenty inches. Of course, it would be a real chore to locate and coax one out. Nice job! im glad that you produce these videos. I'm close to seventy now and don't have the knees working properly so I have to live it vicariously. Thank you!

@@LooknFishy Good luck on that one, Drew! I look forward to the results. Browns can be incredibly adaptable. I have caught them in some strange places at times, often within city limits where some surprising specimens occasionally appear. You have a special situation in Western Colorado (I'm assuming you live in that area) where Browns can be found not only in the resevoirs but in streams of the High Country. It might be good video material to take everybody on an occasional safari for the big guys.

The start of this was classic. Leave the trail to go to the water. That walk looked like snake country for sure . Only 1? Lucky I thought. Then fire ants near the waist line? To close for any dude. Then shin smash? That was like Indians Jones having to deal with a bunch of stuff before he gets to the treasure. Who doesn’t love dry fly fishing? Great video.

New to your channel in the past week or so from here in the driftless...love your videography and focus on gorgeous fishing locales without too much yammering along the way. Well done! When you return home this fall could you consider making a video in which you demonstrate how you choose a remote stream and then plan a day trip to it from scratch? I watched at least one of your planning videos in which you shared the types of sources you use, and obviously you're very discreet about revealing specific locations, but a 'soup to nuts' planning video about a hypothetical trip for demonstration purposes would be awesome!

Drew, You must have accepted the philosophy of hiking beyond the willingness of all other flyfishers to reach the sweet spots that you fish. I couldn't help but notice your heavy breathing near the beginning of this video. Great job of sharing! Please leave out the amount of fish you catch and release, it isn't needed in my opinion. I know it is enough to bring out our worst envy.

So awesome. Nothing like that here in NC save a few private streams. Avg wild fish in most of our hike in spots are brown 10”, rainbow 8-9” and brookie 7”. A wild brown in our remote streams is considered a trophy at 15”.

Amazing size trout with so little pocket water. Thanks for taking us along! Not a big fan of brown trout. They will supplant even the rainbows. They can live in most any stream and aren't not nearly as good eating as other trout. Cutthroat are the only natives here. My fav is brook trout for taste and looks, but they are slow growing like the cuts.

You scored the trifecta: Brown, Brookie and Rainbow. I wonder with Brookies and Browns in that stream if there might be a Tiger Trout lurking in there? Looks like a wildfire swept through that area at some point in the past. It's not really an adventure unless you venture to remote rugged places where you're not the top predator in the woods. Great stuff Drew, well done. You're videos are the highlight of my week. Good luck with the rest of your tour.

Another great video. I have been watching all of your 2 month excursion, and I think I like Colorado the best. Excellent streams, fish and wilderness. When you explore these little streams, are you aware beforehand if they are actually holding trout? Or does every stream in CO have trout? It just amazes me that they all have beautiful trout, good sizes and healthy populations. Looking forward to future views!

Nope, rarely have an idea. Most of these are just blue lines on a map. Occasionally, I'll run into a blog or something that points me to a stream or an area and in that case I have a better idea. I like the exploration as much as the fishing...just seeing the area is what I dig most. The stream is just something to reach!

Drew, magnificent!!! That country looks so cool!!! Do you keep track of how many fish you catch each day, keep a journal at all? like this summer how many trout do you think you will catch?? All three species in one stream!! Can’t say I know where to do that in PA!!!! I do in WV. I do see a few. I saw the fish that ate the dropper in the beginning which is why I kept drifting over him and the brown at the end in the wood. Other than that mostly just fishing holds. On days like this when they are aggressive I don't look hard...they will usually come to you!

Remember in one of your previous videos when I said there were some monsters just west of that creek? Well this is just over the hill, South, from that. I suspect you're going to hit it in the next video. I just went in there last week and pulled out a few nice 16 inchers on a wooly bugger but lost a good 18 incher. Good video!

That was a wonderful video which left me with three impressions..from a non-angler, but lover of the "idea" of being one. Yes, I've got a fly rod 18 y/o and never used, and several other rods (don't ask me questions on them, I'm from The Bronx and moved to CO over 32 years now and don't knke what I bought). First impression: you fishing fellas who do what you do ARE badass; second impression..come hell or high-water you're fishing regardless of anything or extreme pain?!: and third impression--have your ever come across a hike to a water spot that jusy wasn't there, dried up, or just took a wrong turn and no water? I think I'd be devastating after an hour hike and nothing. Thanks again...love all the videos and your "adventure series" of videos those most. 😃Take care and be safe!

Once or twice I've found skinny water, rarely a dry stream. After a few hikes you start to get an idea of a stream based on the topography and altitude. I'm not likely to risk a long hike unless I'm confident it'll at least have water...need the water to drink too! Definitely found some empty streams...some on this trip!

Any tips on executing the bow and arrow cast? Do you only cast the leader typically or do you also throw the fly line if you need to? Is there any motion with the rod hand other than aiming? Thx

Use barbless hooks lol! I will do both at times but typically all I need is enough line out to carry over any conflicting currents. Nope I just hold it out away from my body as far as I can.

What boots are you using for those hikes in? Wear hiking boots then switch to wading boots?

I wear orvis ultra light wading boots to hike and wade. I'll talk about them soon in the series. I wear liners and quality hiking socks...that's all!

I did see you covered it so I'll go back and review. My only question is how to find streams like this on my own. I'm new to this in that stream you caught 100 I'd probably catch 3 but once I find a stream that nice we'll see. Maybe back home in Alaska I know some with zero pressure.

What a stream! Very envious. Mostly browns but a couple of rainbows and I have a couple of questions about that. I have watched a lot of your videos and you do sometimes catch both species on the one stream. So do the two species occupy the same parts of a stream or are they located in different places. Is it possible to predict where a rainbow is more likely to lie than a brown?

I generally look for rainbows where I expect the water to be cooler and maybe faster...they seem to prefer moving water and high DO. Browns are much more tolerant of warmer water and tend to like slower water. This stream for example, I started catching brookies and rainbows at about the same time as I was moving up in the stream rather then down. I expect I'd find more of both and possibly some cutthroat if I kept moving upstream.

Drew, love your channel. I try to get out in southern Ontario when the wife lets me but our streams don't hold this many and these sizes around here, it is usually tough. Would love to hear what you use to keep the fly dry with all those little currents and all those fish. Gink or similar doesn't seem to last for me...

Drew... do you mostly sight fish or are you casting where you think fish will be? I'm color blind and have a hard time seeing fish. I cast where I think they are but I feel like my hooks ups would be more frequent if I could see them.

I definitely look for fish but mostly just blind cast and target the likely holds. Always a balance of getting close enough to see but not too close that you spook fish...so I tend to stay back and just hit the likely spots!

Great video Drew. You mention using your #3 and #4 rods at times. This video you used your #4 8'6" rod. Question: I am buying FF gear and have been told that a 9' 5# would be the best all around rod (Driftless in IA as well as mountain stream and bass). Do you think the #5 is too much rod if you only had 1 rod to choose? Thanks again and great job sharing your adventures.

I do 90% of my trout fishing with an 8'6" 5 wt. Everybody suggests the 9' 5 wt for the same reason people suggest buying a 30-06 for deer hunting. I have been at this since 1963. Some guys like really light-line rods. I fished the 2 wt when Orvis first offered the 7'9". I have a 7'6" 4 wt that I just love for that kind of small creek type of thing. I am lazy by nature, and I don't like to force the rod to turn over the bugs I want to fish at any given time so I stick to the 4 5, and 6 wts for my trout fishing, It's like when I started fly casting in the salt, get an 8 wt. yeah that was to much work in the winds among other things I when to a 10 wt. for the inshore fishing I do, easier and more enjoyable. I can only say what I found that was best for me, for you well try a few rods out, and if you can fish a couple that is the best way to decide. Nothing is going to be perfect 100% of the time.

For purely trout fishing in the driftless I would suggest a 4 weight rod but since you mentioned bass fishing The 5 weight might be more appropriate. I would also suggest a minimum of 8 1/2 feet, nine would be better. Longer rides keep you above the stream side grass, they are better for role casting and mending. Even my three weights are 9 foot. I believe The longer rods are better even in tight situations. This is 45 years of experience talking!

I have fished the driftless and target bass pretty often with a 9ft 5 wt (what I was using in the vid from the summer for smallmouth bass, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptOboaSqspa-pqc.html. I think it would cover you pretty well. Might be a little heavy for some of the smaller driftless streams but not many and still give you the ability to throw smallish weighted streamers for bass and trout. I really can't argue with the logic of a 9ft 5wt if you had to chose one rod for driftless and bass. Lots of stuff to stay above and still have some good reach to high stick.

Some think so but I believe it's just as easy to work from behind and out of sight...trout face into the current...plus setting the hook on a fish facing u has poor hook up percentages...your pulling the hook away and out of the fishes mouth. Setting from behind...pulling hook into it!

@@LooknFishy ive visited twice. I live in S.E. GA. Went to visit my grandson in Spokane. Fished just under some rapids on the Spokane River on my last night there. Caught the elusive Red Band Trout. I was thrilled to death. Im a brackish water fisherman, targeting spotted sea trout, redfish, flounder, black drum, sheephead, etc. Nice video. Also subscribed!

@@LooknFishy im in Waycross. Lol Small world. The fishing on the Spokane River has some tough regs. Id never fished with a barbless fly before, so it was a challenge keeping him on the hook and landing him. I had been skunked everyday while there, until the very last evening. I wanted those bragging rights so bad. On the Washington side redband are highly protected. Cannot keep. All i wanted to do was land one, and i did. 🎣😊

Drew Just came back from the Dubois Wy area. Tried hard to find streams in the outback. Even paid a guide lots of $. Never found what you are fishing. Would love to know the area and how you chased it down. I have no problem hiking and camping 10 miles to catch trout. Thanks Nice videos Steve

These are some of the resources I use...kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ga1odcelu9u-ipc.html. And all I used for this series. One of the things I mention is how I remove areas with youtube. I searched debois last year and found several videos with total views over 500k...so I removed it from my list. Heard several others say, the small stream fishing there was devastated from over exposure from a well known site. But I can't speak intelligently on it myself.
