As a French person, it's amusing to see most of these "difficult" words directly come from French (or Latin if you dig deep enough), albeit with a *heavily* modified pronunciation compared to ours.

I'm 65, a native English speaker, spent 30 years as an EFL/ESOL teacher, and have only now learned the correct way to say anemone. (I've never needed to talk about anemone the flower, only sea anemone). I couldn't believe it when i went back to David Attenborough videos about coral reefs and heard him saying it the same way you do. Thank you, Lucy.

The english language actually borrowed a countless number of french words! In this way, Lucy in this video had pronounced a lot of english words that are from french (cache, coup, debris, debut, elite, faux pas, foyer, genre, herb, interpret, etc. and so many others). That is the reason why most of the time some english words are not "logically" pronounced, like the words "almond" or "salmon" that are very audibly close from the french pronunciation of "amande" and "saumon".

Most of the people are used with the American English, because they hear it in movies, songs etc., but when it comes to British English, not so many fully understand it or succeed with the pronunciation. Italian here, for how strange it may seems considering that we had a fairly long score of military enmity in the 2 past centuries (for instance Napoleonic Wars and Second World War) and in the fact that this is more of a germanic language than a romance one, I always find amazing how just listening to a properly spoken British tongue I experience a sense of deep fascination. Harmonic, rythmic, polite but able to be very sharp and straightforward at the same time and all-together a beautiful composition of most of European tongues arranged in a musical-like orchestration of words... Definitely the main language that we all should be speaking.

I'm Spanish and I find so difficult to pronounce words like 'enough' or 'laugh'. Great video Lucy, very helpful! I will come back here to take some words for my high school essays. ❤
