Thanks! I hadn't considered the Beta 87A before, but I'm adding it to my wish list now.

Oh man, the KMS8 is the ultimate microphone for my voice and range. I always used the SM58beta but it has such a narrow "sweet spot" and it also extremely distorted my high regions and when we played back a recording it didn't sound like "my voice". The KMS8 doesn't do that at all! It is stable in my entire range. And boy, does it look sexy, especially in the nickle colored version. That's the one I bought today. 😍

We got a KSM8 recently and liked it quite a bit more than the SM58. So much warmer and punches through the mix better. Great video!

You ever try a 565SD? I find it's like a warmer SM58. Better for other singers than the voices an SM58 flatters. And still dirt cheap.

I don't think I'll ever stop using my beta 87a. Never fails to do its job. From Steve Green covers, Sinatra, standards. Beta 87 is a beast.

I'm a hard core fan of the Beta 87a, and I think it's a better mic than the KSM8. I just spent two hours with both of these mics in my house comparing the two and frankly I think the Beta 87a is better. Smaller sweetspot but tighter bass and nicer air on top!. For a pro that knows how to work a mic I would give the Beta87a the edge every time.

For a mid to low male voice I find the 87a really shines and make the vocal really cut while retaining the overall quality.

Wow, I expected the two to sound really different, favoring the KSM8. But I’d have to agree, the difference does not seem that big to me (listening through DT 770 pros). I don’t like the SM58 much at all. When I mix, I always feel like I’m fighting the mic’s character to get some clarity going. Funny thing is: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Beta 87A. Very forgiving with singers who can’t keep their position in front of the mic, wonderful addictive clarity above 10kHz... Just love it. Totally worth the money in my opinion. I’m so glad you mentioned it. :D

Really value the honest down and objective review here. Way too many sales forward content out there in reviews like this. This is how I would do it myself too, knowing that the tradoff is that there is less money to be made with being so blunt about things (people and companys both want rosy picture 24/7), but I would also sleep better at night knowing that there was nothing fake or misleading about the message.

where the KSM9 I have shines for me is I am a very dynamic singer and I also sat in front of drums on our stage (in a gym). Feedback was not an issue and I still had a bigger sweetspot for singing through my different volumes. SM58 works fine, but nuances and sibilance effec t is lost with it. The extra money is worth it with a practiced singer and a good vocalist. Thankful my sound engineer at Church Chewy gave it to me. It has suited me well in my acoustic gigs as well. Mic effectiveness depends on application. If you had to gain both recordings, you probably didn't get any advantage out of the KSM8 sweetspot. Just. thoughts, still a warranted and pleasant video!

One characteristic the 58's had was backside low-end gain and for those who use floor wedges, they can be a little problematic. My favorite for using was the 87, as well. It just seemed to have a cleaner, better sound. I agree, I couldn't hear $400 worth of difference, either. Also, I would be curious how "road-worthy" the KSM8 would be. I know some of the old-timers used 58's as impromptu hammers (not recommended, but when in a pinch...). Good review video, though.

I think the difference is subtle for shure. (See what I did there!?!) To me, as an engineer, I hear the 58 having a very compressed sound. I've had them in the past where you get a vocalist who's really wailing and going at it hard, and the mic starts to give you some very minor distortion. Like the diaphragm isn't having the time to react and it starts to hit a square wave a bit. It's a very powerful sound, very much a rock and roll sound. The KSM8 sounds a bit cleaner and smoother. A bit more natural sound, with more of a breathy-ness to it. I think each serves it purpose, some application call for the rock and roll sound, other call for the breathy-ness and subtly of the KSM. The KSM to my ear sounds like a female leaning mic, where ad the 58 to me has a more like masculine, in your face sort of a sound.

If you check to see what the Vatican sound guys use for The Pope, he seems to use a Beta 87 inside and a silver KSM8 outside. All the other guys just use SM58s. Also, The Pope seems to have noticed the obviously larger sweet zone of the KSM8. Personally, I like the AKG535 & C7 and use the KSM8 if phantom power is not available or if the vocalist moves around a bit. P.S. Everyone uses 58s (never owned one) but if that's the range you're in, check out the Beta 58 for a little more money (BETA 87 sounds better). The AKG535 with the roll off switch in the 100hz cut position sounds similar to the KSM8, but the KSM8 is supercardiod. AKG C7 is supercardroid also, and at half the price of the KSM8.

10 out of 10 review. I came to this after watching some other guy sing into both mics with a load of distance and compression, basically invalidating the review, since the SM58 does not work well from 6 inches away, and with compression on its anyone's guess if you're hearing the mic's sound or the sound the mixer gave it. This was a much more useful review than that.

Golly gee, what a plot twist! haha. Good video, glad to see the differences. Proximity really was much better with the KSM8, but I agree, I didn't hear a "$400" difference in audio quality from the SM58 to the KSM8. I would like to hear the middle of the road option though - the Beta 87A.

You're not gonna to hear a big difference between the 2 microphones especially when you're doing live music because after a while people's ears get fatigued and after a while it all sort of sounds the same. but I agree with what you're saying there's no big difference between the 2 microphones they both sound great !

If your a true vocalist then you go with a quality mic, the ksm8. I’ve owned both and there’s a huge difference. Ksm8 is cleaner, more natural, better proximity effect properties, far less compressed. If you don’t want to drop $450 then go with the Sennheiser e945 which blows away the sm58 and the beta.

As a true performer, id say it depends on the frequency range from the vocalist... A lil context- I perfom a lot in house private parties, we play banda music sinaloense style.. many gigs in one day aprox, 4 days out of the week.. With that said, all of our instruments are trumpets trombones, one very loud tuba and clarinets.. They dont need mics in small private house parties, unless the client really want to show off we bring the whole sound equipment.. But most of the time i only use one mic for me with a qsc k 12 on a pole, no mixer., So I’ve tried all the shure from the cheapest to the most expensive one.. And only one that kind off worked with my voice range was the beta 87a but since that mic needs phantom power in order to work well, i was forced to pump up the gain in the speaker, wich resulted in a lot of high frequency feedback, I decided to try out the sennheiser brand, i only tried the e835 and the e935 capsules... And i felt in love with the e935, that one worked really well with my voice and started noticing that I would end less tired with that one, because with the other ones i felt like i really had to scream to the mic for it to capture my voice frequencys.. But than i shure came out with the new wireless system replacing the slx line, and decided to try it out... I sold my sennheiser in other to afford the shure system wich I ordered with the ksm8 capsule... You cant imagine my disappointment when I spent $1,300 in a “quality mic” that gave me bad results compared to $600 for a wireless sennheiser system that was doing just fine for me... Even the cheap shure sv200 works better for my voice than the $500 dollar ksm8... But i will have to keep the shure though, because no body will pay me over the half of what I paid for.. And now i will have to spent another $600 on a sennheiser system.. 😓

That's an interesting comparison! Thanks a lot! If you'll try to listen with your soul and emotional perspective, I think sm58 works much better, I mean your song works better emotionally. Maybe because of this proximity effects, I don't know. I'm a pro sound engineer and singer, and I see that good old 58 is a legend not by an accident.

Dude, the point of the KSM8's not to sound better than others. The point's that it is much easier to manipulate in the frequency spectrum... Lol. Anyways. This is also the job for the KSM9, which I hope I'll get soon. 🙏🙏🙏

I was recently on the market for a new microphone. Since I owned a couple of Shure mics from 15 years ago, I looked into the 3 mics you mentioned here. I finally ended up buying a Sennheiser e945. Technical specs and performance aside, I decided to buy fair trade products. I cannot in my conscience work with a product that was produced by slave wages. Sorry I'm not trying to be politically correct or anything, but it seems to be the right thing to do.

The 58 has more gain in the mids, but nothing that a good sound tech couldn’t EQ out. The Heil PR-20 is a great mic in the $100 range if you want an upgrade from the 58.

I just have to admire your honesty. Co-incidence that just at the moment you correctly recognized it, I was thinking exactly that! No difference to my ears between SM58 and KSM8. Incidentally I ordered KSM 8 today on a whim not ever seeing or hearing it in person. Came to youtube to see reviews. Think I might have to cancel my order.

They are both excellent microphones from Shure's Mexico factory. One main advantage of the KSM8 is that, to my knowledge, the Chinese aren't counterfeiting it yet. I was recently in a place with three SM58 mics, and two of them were fakes.

Also, keep mics at least three inches away. For KSM8 take it a foot or more away, do the same for sm58 and then compare, lol, KSM8 has a huge sweet spot! Barely any proximity effect to the point if you are used to boominess in lower range, it will sound thin. KSM8 is also better at rejection at sides and back, and pushes that Shure colored sound, round but very little airiness. Beta 87a if you want the airiness in the Shure range (haven't tested the KSM9 though).
