And in part 9 of our on-going series, we take a look at some of the lesser known games that were released for the PC in 1998!
I cheated a little on this entry; a few of these were actually quite heavily marketed at the time (e.g. Vigilance, Dominion, Space Bunnies Must Die) - but since they didn't make much of an impact upon release, they have been relegated to obscurity. If you were a PC gamer at the time, you may have heard of those titles (almost certainly seen ads for them) - but probably didn't play them due to their poor reception. So, I feel their appearance on this list is worthy.
And if you've read this far - congratulations! Have a steam key!

I fear I'll never find the game I'm looking for. After watching videos from the 80s and 90s I'm almost certain it's a game from the late 80s with a slight chance it's an early 90s game. It was played with a view similar to battle chess, not totally above or behind. It was a 1v1 war/battle game, you could only play against AI. Each player had a base at the extreme bottom or top of the screen. You produced units out of your bases and the goal was to destroy the other players base. I don't think there were any humanoid units I recall some aerial units and some land units that seemed to sway or spin. I don't recall much color, if I'm remembering correctly it was all gray, black, and white. I believe the play area had a grid format (squares) like chess but the game was real time not turn based. Anybody have any idea on what this could be?

You aren’t kidding about “obscure.” I was reasonably into PC gaming back then, and I barely remember any of these. Thanks.

NOTE: The sound is a little corrupted in some of the clips. Our recording software had a hiccup which we didn't notice until AFTER all the captures were done, unfortunately.

I'm curious, do you use emulation software or original hardware to run this games? I found myself little bit difficult to run them in modern OS

Without getting into too much detail - all footage in this video was captured using a combination of either DOSBox or PCEM. Doing so was incredibly difficult in many cases - and these "obscure PC games" videos take a huggggge amount of effort to produce. I didn't even try to get them working on a native Windows box.

I've heard of Dominion. Mainly because it's a somewhat notorious commercial failure, though not to the same extent as Battlecruiser 3000AD

Funny thing, I remember some of this games. Not coz I played them 😂. When I was a kid I had PC, most of the time for playing shovelware and shareware of magazines coz I only played what my parents bought me at the time. And I had a Mega drive in the 90s so they used to bought me games for MD. Anyway, story is I remember some of this games around shops in Spain. Bargain bins, bookstores etc. Kinda a warm memory watching those boxes. Some of them I wanted so badly haha.

Were there a lot of different games in Spanish stores? Or was it mostly the same games you'd see in the rest of Europe/US? I'm always interested in the games sold in different regions. I know that in the 80s and early 90s, the Spanish software development scene was really big (TopoSoft, Dinamic, etc), but what was it like in the late 90s?

I have a weird fascination with the Win 9x era of computer games. Some of it is nostalgia since, along with the Sega Genesis, a Windows 98 computer was my first gaming platform growing up. But PC gaming from the era also shares some of the same quirks that make platforms like the PS1 and Wii so special; They all had a massive library that ranged from weird and experimental, to kiddie shovelware, to some of the greatest games of all time. Even the bad games end up being odd relics of their time or at least infamous. I still love modern gaming, especially coming out of the indie scene, but now that everything is so standardized and polished its become more boring than before.
