A low, slow and sloppy turn, gets ugly. I was very lucky to have had, just enough energy, to pull that off. A beginner mistake to say the least. Over confidence in the condition, not fully in the landing mode mindset. I promise to, NEVER turn that low and slow EVER again!

Thank you for showing us your error and explaining how you made it. To the viewers who don't see how this could have been crippling or fatal, well, get some lessons and listen to the older guys and they'll explain it to you. If it doesn't scare you away from the sport, welcome aboard and happy thermals to you!

He almost stalled but pulled off the landing. I built a Rogallo wing kite and you shouldn’t do that tight of a turn so close the the ground. My buddy stalled our kite and broke the left leading edge at the World Hang Gliding Championships. Thank god he didn’t hurt himself badly.

@LSUcHamp606 -- It's not hitting the bush with your feet that kills you. It's hitting the rocks with your face 0.1 seconds later. (Yes, he could have survived even if he had hit the bush. It's possible he could have even been uninjured, if he was lucky. But it's far from a certainty. You just don't want to be that out of control and in a potential face-plant condition at the same time.)

When you turn, you dont always know which way the wind is blowing, it could have changed direction 2 min ago. So always turn at 150% above stall speed and add the average wind speed in your area, e.g. a k7 glider stall speed is 60km/h landing speed is 90km/h add local wind speed of say 30km/h so landing speed should be 120km/h or you could accidentally turn and fly with the wind at the same speed as the wind which means you will fall out of the sky like a brick. Particularly in some thing very light and draggy like a hang glider. e.g. pilot is flying the k7 glider at 80km/h and turns down wind in a 30km/h wind effective airspeed is 50km/h the aircraft stalls at 60km/h do this at low altitude and you will drop a wing and be too low to recover before you hit the ground upside down. I only fly gliders like a k7 or k13 but I fly them like a boeing 747, I come in high and far away from the field and then I do my final straight approach from a nice safe altitude with no turning close to the ground. I have done a lot of aerobatics including tail slides but thats at 6000 ft when the ground comes closer then my respect level increases exponentially.

The thing about long straight finals on HG is they don't always work that well. At my local site it is the standard practice to do a 180 left turn to final below a tree line, close to the ground, coming out of that some 5 meters above ground, basically into ground effect. Why? First is behind those trees the terrain goes down and there are houses and turbulence. Second as our gliders are controlled by weight, in a bank angle you have like 1.5g and therefore 50% more roll control authority to counter any gust or turbulence. Of course we all do that fast. It somewhat looks like the standard approach guys do at Fort Funston except the site is very diffent. Here (Lagoa, Florianópolis - Brazil) an S approach with straight final only works well all the time with single surfaces, sloe gliders, or a rigid with flaps. For faster gliders, this U turn works better provided you have the skill and airspeed for it.

Not a pilot, but I know a thing or two. I wonder if air density/heat is not an issue in situations like this... On a slightly cooler day, the glider would have "flown better," and the same input may have not had such a close call. Remember, things don't fly well in warm air... The way you flew on a cool day may not work on a hot...
