Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
Can I take this opportunity to say a quick thank you to everyone who has been following my progress over the last couple of years, or for that matter, the last couple of weeks.
When I started my KZfaq channel, I had no idea that I’d be posting my 100th video so quickly, and am still amazed and humbled by the number of people who continue to follow along with my progress - and sometimes lack of it.
I’m hoping that 2024 will be a year of action, rather than procrastination, so with that in mind, let’s get into it.
In a previous video I showed how I'd begun to implement the plan for constructing the tricky bit of the layout behind the scenic break board, and then announced that completing this area was my number one priority for this year.
In this video I’m going to show how I’ve made some progress in this area, and how I’m about to begin creating the first section containing point work, servo motors and wiring for block occupancy detection.
Thanks very much for your continued support.
Ian

Definitely! A short break to recharge my batteries is definitely required! I'll still be working on the layout but without rushing to get things done to put in a video! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

With the sheer amounts of preparation, and logical work, this layout is going to be brilliant. I just threw all my track on the baseboard and randomly hoped for the best!

I really hope you're right about that! Working out the point rodding and point control beforehand has definitely helped me make this part of the build easier for me! I wouldn't say I have OCD, but throwing track onto the baseboard is definitely not me! Lol! However, it works for many, and I've seen marvellous layouts result from it! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

Lack of progress, nonsense. You have completed so much research and trials , they will come to fruition as you progress. A brilliant well thought out approach to the tricky bit, never expected anything else. The break will allow you to regain your enthusiasm, well done on the 100. Cheers Phil.

Hi Gary! Yes, it's been great to begin work and put all of my planning into action! I've been trying to increase the length of my videos, and will probably end up posting less often - or maybe have a Swift every other week mixed with a longer one - so having short videos has elevated the numbers! I bet you've got more hours than me despite having fewer videos! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, 100 videos is a nice milestone to reach! Great tips there on transferring plan to reality! And it is indeed great to see the beginning of this phase 🙂 I think the scripted / narrated style of video takes a lot longer to produce that just talking about what's been done while standing in front of the layout - one of my longest videos, where I did that other style after Christmas, was also one of the quickest of all for me to produce! I've commented before about how I'm amazed at your relentless video schedule - enjoy the break, and some freedom to keep at something for more than just a few days 🙂

Good morning Jonathan! Yes, 100 seemed to arrive so quickly! Hopefully the Tricky Bit will be vanquished in the next couple of weeks! Yeah, I like the scripted approach as it keeps things "tight" and I always say what I want to say! I don't think I'd be very good at "winging it" and would keep losing track of what points I wanted to make! Other people are very good at it, and I enjoyed yours, but it's not for me! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian,

Wow Ian - lots of methodical work going on, but that’s to be expected from you after all the testing and trialling you have done. I don’t envy you in some respects because you have a lot of work to accomplish, but then again, the pleasure you get from constructing the layout is much more than just wham bam there’s the layout! Carry on regardless - its all starting to come together nicely! Regards Steve
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 4 ай бұрын
Hi Steve! Thank you! Yes, all the hard work and testing has definitely paid off in this area! It's quite an intricate bit of track work that needs to fit into a small space, and has lots of point rodding that needs to be in place before the track can be glued down! You're right too, in that I'm enjoying the constructing part! I think many of us do, and is the reason many of us start adding extensions, or build new layouts if we've got the space! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, crikey, the tricky bit!!!! Good to see the first bits of track going down, I know from experience that the first bit wherever that maybe on the layout is the source of what you’re going to do and I find that bit the hardest of them all! Now that’s you’ve started, I’m now looking forward to the Golden Spike moment when the last bit is laid! Not sure they do N Gauge Barbie Ian, but I know my daughter has a stack of them somewhere if you’re interested mate 🤣 Mind out for that pink ballast, enjoy your break, cheers for now, John

Good morning John, crikey indeed! Lol! Yes, I totally agree that the first bit of track is almost always the hardest to lay down! It'll be a while before the Golden Spike moment arrives, if ever! Haha! N gauge Barbies? I'll pass on your daughter's collection thanks! Lol! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

Congratulations on your 100th video Ian. You’re making great progress. I mentioned in one of your previous videos on doing an incline on my 1st n gauge layout. I have tested an incline of 3.5% @ 2 degrees rise. I decided to build out of 9 mm ply left over stuff from base board and 44 mm square support struts on a curve of 9.5 inches. The supports were worked out at 6 inch intervals up to 60 inches which gave a total rise to 56 mm, just over 2 inches. My class 24 goes up with plenty of power to spare so I’m confident that it will pull rolling stock up the incline. I used a chop saw to cut the support chocs at the 2 degrees angle using tangent Pythagoras theory and cut the curve bit from a paper template using a jigsaw cutting at a slow pace. The incline will run off to a bridge in the middle of the layout, so there’s still loads to do.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 4 ай бұрын
Thanks very much Roger! Sounds like you've got the incline situation under control! I'm keeping my inclines between 3% and 3.5% as they all go around curves! I've already found that trains that easily manage straight inclines can have difficulty going up the same incline on a curve because of the friction caused on the inner wheels! For instance, the friction caused on an incline on a second radius curve is huge compared to that caused on an incline on a fourth radius curve! Hope this helps! All the best, Ian.

Evening Ian - I'm lying down in a dark room right now 😂 I saw points actually being laid on Shelfington - don't think I can take the suspense of waiting for a couple of weeks to see the back section come to life 😂. Well done mate. Only thing I might caution - the pink pen - when you lay ballast and the PVA and water comes into contact with the pink colour make sure it doesn't run or you might end up with pink ballast! Enjoy your break and catch you in a couple of weeks. Cheers Euan
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 4 ай бұрын
Good morning Euan! Haha! Hope you enjoyed the lie down! Lol! Ooh! I hadn't thought of the paint running! It's acrylic based, so it will run when water is applied! I'm probably not going to ballast behind the scenic break board, but will switch to a white paint pen for the rest of the layout! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

Would you believe I have a 1970's vintage Wrenn Cardiff Castle HO Loco. Yep, parents got me that and it was shipped all the way to Kauai. Still works, though my HO stuff is put away. During that time, I suppose I was gifted a 4x8 layout, scenery, mountians, tunnels. The switches were powered using tenshodo solonoids. Imagine that. Totally an N Scale guy now.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 4 ай бұрын
Hi Frank! Sounds like you had a pretty neat setup for your HO railway! Those Wrenn locos were extremely well built and almost bulletproof, so I'm not surprised that it's still a runner! Not sure our N scale stuff will last quite as long! All the best, Ian.

I'll come back with links in another comment when I've found them! Thanks for watching and for your continued support! All the best, Ian.

I disagree with your opinion about procrastinating. But if you want to give a value to the last 100 videos; Planning takes a lot of time, as does experimenting/learning. So let's just say you've done 80% of the work in 20% of the time.😁
