When Columbia came to a tragic end, I just happened to be working in the newsroom at The Des Moines Register on what was a quiet weekend morning. It was just myself and the head of our Art department on the clock when the accident occurred. With Captain Laurel Clark having been born in nearby Ames, thus creating a local angle, I was tasked with gleaning as much photos and graphics I could download before the NASA website would get swamped with traffic. A reporter vacationing in San Antonio suddenly became our person on the ground there. By the time all hands came in to work the event, we had gathered as much as we could utilize for the next day's Sunday edition.

As Apollo 13 prepared to splash down, a letter arrived at North American Aircraft Company, from the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Company. Copies were sent to the homes of the three crewmen as well. Enclosed was a bill for 400,001 miles of towing fees. $4.05 for jumper cables. Prepaid sleeping accommodations for two people, with a $32 charge for an additional guest for four nights. Drinking water and alarm clock services were provided for free. After assessing a 20% Corporate Discount and an additional 2% Discount for paying in cash, there was an additional charge of $100,000 to keep the invoice secret. Total assessed fee: $417,421.24 North American never paid the bill, arguing the fee was offset by their own towing of the LEM to the moon on Apollo 10, 11, and 12.

Absolutely amazing that the very first test flight of the Saturn V moon rocket was virtually 100 percent successful. Using 1967 technology, the flight was essentially flawless from launch to splashdown of the Apollo 4 command module.

@@lunarmodule5 what is even more amazing is that Apollo 6 had major vibration problems, but they were able to diagnose and modify the F1 engines on the testing stand so that Apollo 8 performed flawlessly. Incredible feat of engineering and innovation.

Top ten as part 3. Didn't see that one coming 😂. Btw, I've been thinking about nr 1 - Gagarin or STS-1. In the end, for me, STS-1 wins. The edge is in the untested vehicle. Looking forward to see if you agree ;)

Simon, would you as a kid have believed we would be witnessing such a sight as what happened yesterday at Space X, and after they pulled the "unscheduled rapid disassembly" handle, it was STILL a good day, with all that rock-concert-like cheering? Things have changed so much, but I feel like a kid again. 💪🇬🇧🇺🇸👍

Those tire pressure warnings should have told them what they needed to know...
@lunarmodule5
@lunarmodule5 Жыл бұрын
I have always wondered why Rick didn't make a call to mission control at the point they saw the tire pressure warnings
@GeneralJackRipper
@GeneralJackRipper Жыл бұрын
@@lunarmodule5 Well the MC guy did say, "But I think it's just instrumentation." Trouble is, those tire pressure warnings came after a series of temperature probes also failed and stopped working. On the day it happened, I saw the replay and immediately said to myself, "That tire pressure is bad." I think what happened was they sort of lulled themselves into complacent thinking. They had seen the foam strike before and just sort of dismissed it as, "Well how bad could it be?" That kind of complacency is difficult to get out of. Not to mention, by the time re-entry is started there's literally nothing they could do. Even if they saw the hole in the wing there was nothing they could do, they couldn't just leave the crew in space. The reason it hurts so bad is because those astronauts were dead the moment they got into orbit. The only thing that could have changed what happened was if someone saw the foam strike, and aborted the mission before reaching orbit. It just hurts.
