I really love that you included the washing part. This is really true when it comes to brands like h&m etc. It looks nice, It fits great when you first try it, but then after few washes it's just bad. Great content as always

I pretty much only buy under-layers from certain brands, being a touch generous with the overal size of it, especially length. Even then, let's say it's a longsleeve for under an Airism oversized tee, the sleeves can sometimes kinda just get all misshapen, and the bottom of a tee peeking from under something else can also suffer from the same. Most of the risks I did take from H&M and the like did pay off, a lot of the time it's about predicting how it'll shrink and if it remains flattering. It's kind of a blessing, though, a lot less tempting to buy there this way. Too bad brands like Vans aren't jumping on these boxy half-sleeve cuts etc. more, I LOVE some of their clothes, and some have really, really nice cuts with dropped shoulders, flowy fabric, rich dyes, stuff like that, but there's definitely more potential.

It depends really. I've been wearing H&M t-shirts for years and some of them I have had for over 5 years and still wearing them with no signs of being worn off. I enjoy wearing especially the slim-fit ones as they emphasize your physique if you are fit of course. Other t-shirts however, started to look lousy after just few washes. From what I noticed, the ones I bought a few years back are usually much better quality than these bought recently. Same thing applies to sweaters, hoodies, etc. It appears that the overall quality of clothes from popular brands is now significantly worse.

The fit really depends on body shape and personal preferences. I think putting more emphasis on durability and physical properties would be great (i.e. brushing it with a course brush repeatedly, stretching it forcibly many times to see if they return to their original shape, the weight and breathability of the fabric, how easy it is to dry or absorb moisture, and whether they are resistant to staining, will the edges begin to curl after multiple washes/tumble drying, etc)

Hi Tim, I liked how you have made the comparison for White Tee. Uniqlo Tee gets a high rating due to its fabrics. Definitely, they use high-quality standards in manufacturing. But they have used CVC (Cotton Polyester) fabrics which helps to perform well in the criteria that you have made comparisons. Being a clothing manufacturer, I can tell you that Studio Nicholson and Represent are charging high prices because of their position as luxury fashion brands. Manufacturing location and fabric weight have less impact on the price they're charging.

I used to think polyester was bad. And all the same but performance polyester has gotten really good. Not like the 80s anymore. Comes down to how fine they can make the thread. Hate the shrink and wrinkling of natural fabrics. Japan invented and has been the leader in microfabeics

But Polyester is actually plastic and will lose microplastics to the water while washing, so for that natural fibers are way better for environment
@jonasrayet9369

yeah but polyester has the very powerful potential to be made from recycled plastics, that’s a big win seeing how much disposable plastic there is (looking at water bottles). Would transition from a single use plastic to a garment you keep for years. But yeah micro plastics are a pain, I have heard there were specialised bacterias that could digest them, so maybe use this in water filtration 🤷‍♀️

Most of Uniqlo's non-Airism standard fit U series Tee are made of 100% cotton, and they are a bit too thick and heavyweight in hot summer days. They sometimes get stiff after dozens of washing and hang-dry. Maybe need some fabric softeners.

Another good quality test is to hold the shirt into the light to see the fabric. On cheaper shirts, the fabric is mostly sewn diagonal to save up fabric (when cut from the bigger sheet). This is also the reason, why many seams look of after some washes because the fabric is warping when not align.

Something that has become increasingly important to me as I've gotten older (I'm 33), is the back story to the clothing I buy. I've met people who've previously worked in the sweatshops for fast-fashion places like H&M, where they were working 16 hour days, paid $1.75 for the entire day, and only like 14 years old. I am willing to pay significantly more to know that whoever made my clothes were treated better than that. I do not mind having a closet full of $100 t-shirts if I can feel decent about looking at them myself.

I decided to try Colorful Standard shirts this past week after seeing their emphasis on generally nice materials and fight against fast fashion. $38 USD for a plain colored tee I did find steep, but that higher price is honestly quite worth it. I can't vouch for longevity given how I got the tee this weekend, but the shirt materials do feel considerably more quality than pretty much all of my tees. Can't really vouch on transparency either though since I got navy. Fit was spot-on for my slightly wider shoulders, if slightly long. If you make another video of this concept for something like sweatpants or other basics, I would be interested to see your thoughts on those.

For keeping white t shirts (or any white clothing) clean and bright, use fells naphtha soap to spot clean the neck, underarms and any stains before throwing it in the wash. Works better on all natural fibers than on synthetics. After years of washes, you can also use bluing agents to make white look whiter. But I find that fells naphtha soap works very well. Both are very old techniques for keeping white fabric bright.

Honourable mention on the top end for merz b schwanen. In the £100 range is their 13.4oz/yard tee, which is 454gsm as far as I know. All their stuff is great, and it's probably the heaviest tee out there, while also being one of the best made. The crazy heavy shirts drape in a totally different way. I've been liking them a lot myself.

I was also going to mention this brand - Their quality is just amazing, and they are made in Germany. They are also so special as they are loopwheeled and it's pure organic cotton! I don't know if you've seen, but Jeremy Allen White in the series The Bear is wearing a Merz b. Schwanen white T-shirt throughout the whole series! Love Merz b. Schwanen!!

Definitely agree with this. As much as Tim makes great videos this isn’t the comprehensive list of higher priced tee’s out there. Whitesville, sunspel, lady white co, glad hand, etc. the list goes on. He didn’t dive into construction much exactly to your point with loop wheel, etc.

@@wackywiz3 Carl murawski and the iron snail have both made pretty good videos on the topic of tees. There's a lot out there but I guess not all channels are focused on quality so much as just the look and feel. Which is valid in a different light

Nice!! I do find it a little unfair that the UNIQLO t-shirt is NOT pure cotton. You say that "it's typically the cheap brands that don't make pure cotton"... which is false (Primark, H&M), but UNIQLO does. Also, we cannot overlook the fact that the cheap ones are made in sweatshops in developing countries. The wash test... mhm... I'd like to see how they would look like after 10 washes and a few months of wearing them. Great video nevertheless.

It’s really hard for me to find good fitting t shirts, let alone clothes in general due to my size and body structure. I am 5’7 and 170lb but workout a lot so my shoulders are really wide for how short I am. Also my hips are really wide compared to my waist. Finding clothes that are wide enough but not super long is so hard to find. Same goes for any pants. That’s why I really love Uniclo t shirts and the brand in general. The fit that I get from them is always great and sometimes although I might need to get clothes tailored they keep their body proportions. Great video explaining this.

The best way to look good in clothing is to just be physically fit. It improves your aesthetic so much to the point you can wear a t-shirt and jeans and have a better look than someone who has not worked out at all. Hit the gym, bros! Wear confident clothing and just watch your colours.

Thank you for the video, it presents quite a pertinent question. I have a few critiques that I hope you take into consideration in following videos. Regarding the 4 main categories chosen for the test (fabric, fit, opacity, wash): 1. The "fit" is a completely *subjective* category, and so I don't understand why you would evaluate it when your goal is to determine which garment has the best *objective* quality; 2. "Opacity" is a fabric characteristic, so it should be included in the "Fabric" category; 3. What you assess in "Fabric" could have been divided in two categories, namely "Fabric" and "Construction"; 4. Regarding fabric quality, some aspects that were not sufficiently evaluated were thread finishing, such as 'combed' vs. 'ring spun', fabric density, tension and fabric orientation in relation to the seams (which is very important for the longevity of the shape and greatly influences the cost of production since it often means more material used per garment). Also, it would have been nice o have closer, clearer shots of the seams, and even macro shots of the fabrics (though I don't know if that is a possibility for you, as it takes specific gear). 5. It would have been nice if the "Wash" test was done over a longer period of time, as to better evaluate the resistance to wash and ware; 6. It would have been pertinent to include a "sustainability and fair-trade" category, as sustainable materials, fairly payed work and ecologically friendly factory processes greatly factor to the increase of a garments price. I'd also suggest including a made to order t-shirt, for which you would go to a seamstress and choose the fabric and the fit. Especially since it is an option that many people forget, and depending on where you live it can be more affordable than some of the higher end t-shirts you present in this video.

Hey mate really good video! The Uniqlo one is my go to for quite a bit now, I wish there was more "washed" colors but I'm in love with the shape, softness, and the fact that you barely need to iron it post wash. An other one that I really do like for slightly more expensive is the Arket oversized heavyweight tee, it comes around £35, a bit longer than the Uniqlo but it has this extra cotton texture that the Uniqlo one doesn't have. It comes closer to the Represent I would say, but cheaper and smoother. Aside of that, having some extra ones coming from more independent brands like Studio Nicholson or Florence Black are giving this extra thing when you're wearing them.

This test was very interesting. The wash test would really interest me across many brands, various products, and different fabrics. I am looking for cloths that I can wear for a long time. The feeling if a new piece looks terrible after the first wash is just the worst, and I have this fear particularly for brands like COS that feel so amazing at first. Also, I would love to know what sweater you are wearing around 2:50!

The Uniqlo cotton t-shorts are awesome. Either those or Ralph Lauren are the best. RL really stay sharp and soft and look like new despite hundreds of washes, the Uniqlo ones don’t hold as long but are extremely comfortable and high quality as well. Calvin Klein also has great t-shirts. They’re not as soft but also very durable.

Regarding the environment aspect with the polyester in Uniqlo. Yes it‘s true. But they use it for function and softness. I can wear them for 2 days and maybe even 3. Normal shirts are stinky after 1 day max. Also I bought some Airrism and other basic shirts 4 years ago. The Uniqlo shirts got some shirts and stains but the fit and quality is still perfect. The others are already in the bin for 2 years. So I wash and throw away them less frequently. Less production and less washing is definitely less environmental impact in my book.

Merci pour cette vidéo très intéressante ! Even though I agree with your conclusion, I just wanna mention the two things you said I don’t agree with: 1. The fact the Uniqlo tee is partly made of polyester is intentional. They have cheaper tees that are 100% cotton so they didn’t do that to cut down costs -it is part of the Airism technology, to make the tee moisture-wicking and quick-drying (polyester does have drawbacks though, like smell retention). 2. Weight is very often a sign of quality. A thin t-shirt is not always bad quality but a high-gsm one rarely is.

the only thing i didnt like about the uniqlo oversize airsm tee. the polyester is on the reverse side of the fabric. I'm one of those who hate wearing polyester touching the skin. However polyester doesnt shrink, hence is good for holding up after washes.

I also bought the vintage white represent shirt and was disappointed by the colour in person. I also realised they dropped this particular shirt before the release of their ‘Blanks’ collection where they seemed to do a fit reconstruction. I have a newer Blanks shirt in the dusk colourway and it’s much shorter and the neck is tighter, a perfect fit in my eyes
