Makes sense to me. They should pay anybody for work they're either not capable of doing themselves or work they simply aren't willing to do. People at his skill level and willingness to put in that work will eventually start feeling like they're being taken advantage of. BECAUSE THEY ARE! It could turn ugly for the next guy asking for his help if he isn't shown some love along the way. It happens more often than it should too.
