YE TUDA, or Sabay Flang, is the oldest living resident of Sitio Bakngeb in Tboli, and was the first person to settle here. She does not know how exactly how old she is, but we know part of her story happened in 1915, when the River Cave opened up.
And so when I asked about the history of the place, I was surprised to see her dictating about two pages of A4, very slowly, to her grand-daughter. It took almost an hour. Little did I know that she had never told the story in full to anyone before, but after I asked about the history, she felt that she needed to keep the history alive and record it.
It is a story of how the Bakngeb River Cave was formed, how it opened up, and how this place was founded.
So we heard a piece of tribal history, until that day untold - which is something very, very overwhelming.
After that incredible morning, I went to the nearby Tuesday Market which has products from 4 neighbouring barangays, especially the awesome tribal coffee.
Then onwards to Hidak Falls, a place I went back in 2016, which now has a partly improved road. Part of it - we had to dig it so the pickup would pass!
Plenty of tribal dancing near water happened too - all in all a great exposition of the fantastic Tboli culture.
