SCRIPTED SEGMENT ON OFFENSIVE COSTUMES:
When it comes to costumes like Blackface, Redface, Brownface, and Yellowface: these costumes are all about establishing white supremacy through making fun of people of color. These depictions were only funny to white audiences, and were harmful, demeaning, and insulting to the victims.
In the early 20th century, minstrel shows were incredibly popular, so it unfortunately was not surprising that Blackface would be used as a popular Halloween costume as well.

"Back then, Blackface was something of a caricature for Black people. They exaggerated our features, it mocked us, things like that. It's a really sad time in American History, and that's the reason why when people say, "Well, I wanna be Diana Ross!" You can be Diana Ross, you just don't have to be the brown Diana Ross. You the white Diana Ross."
Redface is still upsettingly popular for Halloween today. Redface dates back to the Boston Tea Party in 1773, when protesters dressed as Mohawks. And because of white supremacy and colonialism, Redface continues to be popular for centuries after.

Of course, back in the 1930s, racism was a lot more mainstream and ethnic costumes were not viewed as a problem among the white community. I came across tons of newspaper clippings that had lists similar to this, with offensive costume ideas such as “Aunt Jemima" and "Chinese Princess”

it's so interesting to hear that halloween had romantic implications in victorian times because i grew up in the ukrainian diaspora in canada and we always had "romantic" esque traditions for halloween! one was all the boys would put one shoe in a bag and all the girls would pick one randomly and they'd get paired up with the boy whose shoe they took out. another was that you'd light a candle and drip the wax into a bowl of cold water, and the wax would harden into the shape of the first letter of your true love's name. it's so funny to me how these romantic kinds of spins happened in different parts of the world!

What you described are actually customs still practiced today in Eastern Europe but on a different occasion, during St. Andrew's Day (30th November). It's a very fortune-telling based "holiday", mostly related to finding your "true love". I think it derives from some old Slavic traditions. It has that "mystic" atmosphere so I wouldn't be surprised if it got mashed together with Halloween, since the vibe is similar.

Hey! I'm from Poland and we have the same tradition with the wax, but we pour it through the hole in the key (in those old, big keys). And we do it on 29th of November. This day is called Andrzejki because it's the name day of saint Andrzej. We also have traditions with shoes haha But in Poland all unmarried girls in the house are puting their shoes in a row, then they move them to the front of the row one after another and the girl which shoe will touch the door still of the front door first will get married soon. Andrzejki are also celebrated in schools and they involve lots of ,,wróżby" (I'm not sure how to translate it). Those are games which are ment to predict your future or love life, like in the wax and the shoes traditions. You can predict your husband or wife name, whether you will be rich or not, how many children will you have, your carrer and stuff :) And this celebration is often connected with collecting candies for children in hospitals (for Christmas presents).

Learning that Halloween was "romantic" actually clarifies some family history for me! My great-great-great-great grandma was coming home from a Halloween party, and decided to test the superstition that if a girl walks to her bed backwards on Halloween night, the next man she sees will be the man she marries. We always thought that was a strange superstition...She tested it out, walking backwards to her bed. Her home is actually an inn, it being the family business. That night, her key was accidentally given to a guest, so when great ×4 grandma climbed into bed, there was already a man there. They got married that Christmas eve.

Just to clarify: all the children doing black face in the movies were forced, in fact 15 year old Judy Garland was forced to do the minstrel scenes in “everybody sing” she was also threatened to be fired from her contact with mgm. I am NOT justifying any usage of black face but I am saying never blame the children that were taking part, they were (more often than not) forced. Blame the studios making the movies blame MGM, blame Columbia pictures, blame 20th century fox, DONT blame Judy Garland, DONT blame Shirley Temple, DONT blame Mickey Rooney. (Edit: when I said “don’t blame Mickey Rooney” I DIDNT mean the breakfast at Tiffany’s scenes, he absolutely needs to be blamed for that...I meant him in “babes on Broadway” and “everybody sing” because he was a child)

I was taught that Halloween was a day to honor the dead. We don't celebrate it like this in Finland at all. We do have a similar thing to trick or treating during easter. Going door to door asking for candy by singing a poem and waving a decorated willow branch. It's called "virpominen".

Hi, I'm from Veracruz, México, and here we have a very similar tradition (the candy, the song, the decorated branch), but we celebrate it two weeks before Christmas. It's called "The Branch" (La Rama) and the song is about the birth of Jesus.

Honestly, when I was younger, looking at those old photos of minstrel show performers in blackface were not only offensive, but the performers looked extremely terrifying. I hope I'm not the only one that thinks those performers were horrifying enough to be my sleep paralysis demon. Also, those mickey mouse costumes look extreeemely creepy ugh.

They did it to vilify African Americans as well. I mean look at how Disney makes the villain look ugly or scary. They are trying to persuade people to fear and distrust them just like these people did with Black face. It truly is sad that this had to happen and I hope other countries take note at how offensive it is and stop. Looking at you the Netherlands!

I’m Australian, and I’m just waiting for the inevitable think pieces on why Australians should/should not celebrate Halloween. Due to the immense influence of American media, Halloween is very slowly becoming “a thing” here, but quite a few Aussies are very unhappy about this. Mostly they say that we aren’t America, and they dislike the massive cultural influence that the US has here. Personally, I wish Halloween would become more of a thing here- it’s fun. That’s my entire reasoning. And it’s not surprising that Aussie kids, seeing movies and shows that present Halloween and all the fun US kids are having, want to be able to dress up and have fun too. Some communities are starting to do limited trick and treating. And there are adult costume parties- those have been around for a while. And my daughter used to love going around, and as her trick, saying Happy Halloween in Scottish Gaelic (because I speak some and she’s picked up a few phrases). So Oidhche Shamhna Dhona Ghut!

Yeeeeeess I've always loved dressing up and when your a little kid it's fine to dress up in a costume any time of day but once you get older than 6 that's when you have to start wearing normal clothes and as someone who has loved "playing dress up" for basically all my life it's sucks that there is never a time when I can "dress up" and I've always wanted to have a halloween party but since the US is such a joke to everyone i know, I haven't been allowed to have a halloween party or whatever. Luckily this year my parents have become more open minded and don't care anymore (and Dan the man is lifting restrictions on the 24th) so I'm able to spend halloween w/my friends but I think what sucks for younger kids is that they can't go trick or treating unless you live in a certain area because ppl don't to celebrate halloween.

Funfact: In Germany "Halloween" wasn't even really established before 2000's and only got merely accepted at around 2007-2010 since it wasn't something "Germans" would accept or allow their kids to do, as in go around houses and trick or treat. Especially amongst elders it was actually considered a "Bad thing" because to them you got the portrait of a beggar. Halloween and Trick or Treating as most know it from the US only got popluar when a lot of American TV Shows for kids got popular in Germany. Since around 2015 it is widely established to go trick or treating on halloween or have parties (when you're above 15/16 mostly) but we sadly don't have events like ghost houses and stuff like that. Though that might be also interesting to know.

Here in México, besides our tradition od Día de Muertos, the Halloween parties are getting more popular, but the trick or treat is very weird... Although we do something similar in New Year's Eve, it's a tradition called The Old Man (El Viejo), where children, young people or adults dressed as old men/old women and go door to door asking for candy and money (with a song called "El viejo"). And after that, at midnight, we set on fire a doll dressed as an old man, to express our goodbye to the last year.

I don't know what you're talking about. When I was in kindergarten we already had halloween parties at our kindergarten and later in my school. We got sweets almost everywhere (besides that one time this grandma gave us oranges because she forgot that that day was halloween). That was before 2010.

Maybe thats a regional thing (I'm from northwestern germany), but I have celebrated Halloween and gone trick or treating since I was a child. There are Halloween photos of me as a toddler (around 2000) dressed as a witch and also ones from a kindergarten Halloween party I went to when I was like 5. To me the main difference to American Halloween always seems to be that pretty much all the costumes are scary grotesque ones (still often sexy though) because there is the opportunity to dress up as whatever else you want at Karneval. What I mean is, the infamous sexy corn costume wouldn't be worn on Halloween here but instead in February:D

Samhain (pron Soh-wen in Irish, and Sah-ven in Gàidhlig- Scottish Gaelic. Pronunciation guide for those who are unaware) is Celtic in origin, but it’s not like it resembles the current American tradition. That being said, it’s fun, and that is my entire reasoning for why non-American countries should get into it. Isn’t that reason enough?

The OGs. There are a load of games that were played when I was a kid. Mostly to do with apples, dunno if that made it to the States. Also there's bairín Breac and originally we lit up turnips, not pumpkins. It's a lot spookier here. In general seasonal Celtic festivals have some lovely traditions.

I have a genuine question: What if someone’s favorite Disney Princess is Mulan or Pocahontas and they want to dress up as them for Halloween? I’m Chinese myself and when I was in elementary we would dress up for Halloween and go to school and I remember seeing non Chinese/Native people dress up as them. I wasn’t offended at the time and I feel like I still wouldn’t be if I saw it but I want to know what other people think about it. Edit: The reason why I didn’t list Tiana is because her clothing wasn’t based off of African culture (as far as I know of please correct me if I’m wrong) but rather the time period. Edit 2: when I said “I still wouldn’t be” I was referring to kids dressing up as Mulan NOT kids dressing as Pocahontas because I very obviously have no say in that matter.

I love Halloween, but I feel like it's ruined this year, because the fun I had during Halloweekend was going out with friends and dressing up slightly (for me, just a headband accessory and calling it a day). Fun fact: the first appearance of “trick or treating” so to say was in the the early 1900s if I remember correctly. At the time people would leave little soul cakes for spirits so they would have the energy back to the spirit realm as well as for good luck. Sadly though, due to high levels of poverty at the time the poor began stealing the food cakes in order to survive and the church fearing for these people’s’ souls for stealing began telling people who made soul cakes to give it to the poor if one of them knocked on their door asking for some. Also the church began celebrating All Saints Day around Samhain in order to take away attention from Samhain since it was a Pagan holiday and they wanted to try to convert other. Sorry for the long post, but I just adore Halloween and the fashion behind it! If anyone wants to learn about the history of Jack-o-lanterns or just cute Halloween traditions reach out and I’d love to share my knowledge! Happy Halloween y’all!

Great video! Even tho I wish the 2000s would have gotten their own part too. It's a shame that so many people ignore this decade & always jump right into the modern day after the 90s just because it was the very first decade of the 21st century. The 2000s are totally not comparable to 2020 standards in my opinion - judged by technology and society. I‘m really looking forward for you to include the 2000s decade (2000-2009) in future videos ☺️

i'm thinking of doing like a very low effort bog witch costume. green eyeshadow, green lipstick, yellow and orange blush, green dress, and absolutely nothing done to my hair. maybe some nail polish. I'm going to have Zoom classes all day, so it feels silly to put in a bunch of time and money to sit on my bed with the camera off because of my crummy wifi and sweat through something really intensive. My family has roots in viking culture from Norway, which is the tradition my mom raised me on. Now it’s become more of a mix of things as modern pagans learn about other cultures and decide to incorperate them in their personal practices. (not just Wiccans. Wiccans have a set of basic beliefs they follow and not all pagans share these beliefs; some, both Wiccans and non-Wiccans, are more eclectic than others in what they choose to believe. Pagan is an umbrella term that multiple cultures fall under, including Wicca and many indigenous cultures from around the world.) Also, not all pagans or Wiccans are white? I'm genuinely curious what you specifically mean. Basically, please elaborate

I just want to say that this is such a phenomenally well researched and interesting video. Serious bravo for also including your whole script in the description. I'm an American who lives in the UK and Halloween just isn't as popular here. A lot of English people my age have never been trick-or-treating or to a Halloween party, and lots of English families don't get involved now. I often hear crabby old ladies tutting at the supermarket Halloween section saying that "Halloween is so American" and that they don't know why it's getting bigger over here. To hear that it came from Ireland, Scotland and Victorian England in the FIRST place gives me quite the comeback for all the Brits I meet each year who cringe when they ask why this is my favourite holiday.
