The newer 1000 foot ships are purpose built to fit into the locks as they go through the Great Lakes, so the have more of an overall rectangular shape, flatter bow. The old school lakers have a more narrower bow for better movement.

The rounded bows are also much better breaking through Great Lakes ice.

There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

It’s take a lot of guts to make a career out on these big lakes.

It has some age one it right now

Those are mostly just iron ore stains that get created from continually rinsing ore off the deck. It shows up easily on black hulls.

It stays on the Great Lakes. It’s actually quite versatile and seaworthy for being arge though.

Every chance we can be outside in the summer is huge. We are locked in all winter long.

Last Winter one of the VanEnkevort vessels was repainted from black to the typical reddish brown common on many Lakers. Black really shows iron ore stains which get created from washing the decks.

I bet you it’s this year

Don't forget that the hull is greatly discolored to that reddish hue because of the iron ore stains from continually washing the decks. Black hulled ships show this much more than the brownish red hulled ships. If you look at the bow portion of this vessel, you will see mostly black. This is because this area doesn't get stained. So don't think this hull is rusting away. It is not.
