Add in DaVinci Resolve for free and this is unbeatable. Add a tilta cage, mini V mount and those brilliant S series LUMIX L mounts-stunning images, practical form factor and the best UI in the business.

I think they also have a lot of pro battery grips and evf's in theis Basement. This the only reason that they made the G2, because they needed 2 cams for selling that stuff.

😂 totally depends on your use-case and income $3K is still dirt cheap & the FX6 / Komodo style form-factor is essential for documentary filmmaking. I personally would definitely cough up and extra $1500 for the Pyxis, can’t stand the chunky DSLR form factor

Great observation about consumer willingness to give up some features in return for the Blackmagic image quality back in the 2010's when these came out. I owned the original Blackmagic cinema camera, the pocket OG, and then the pocket 4k - but after that it didn't make sense to me to buy any more given the other options on the market

Bad low light performance? But you're shooting at 10,000 ISO. lol. Has the Sony A7Siii really just ruined anyones ability to operate at a normal ISO level? Blackmagic cameras are supposed to be affordable cinematography cameras. If you're a cinematographer you really shouldn't be shooting anywhere near 10,000 ISO unless it's an emergency. For rolling shutter, who is moving their camera back and forth like that? Here's the thing that you can get with a Blackmagic 6K Full Frame that you won't get with any of the non full frame models. The ability to match the overly sharp 6k with softer vintage lenses that have fast T/F stops whilst maintaining that same depth of field. If I shoot with a Helios 58mm, I get a 58mm lens. Same with a Mir 24m, 35mm. I'm actually shooting at 35mm, getting incredible images. I think most of these complaints are just that we're so used to cameras being amateur proof these days and the videographer field has been saturated with amateurs now because they can just set everything to auto, point and shoot.

So I've actually recently bought the Black Magic Full Frame myself. When you know how to shoot it is not bad at all in low light. In fact I was shooting at 12800 ISO on my A7siii with one camera and my blackmagic was able to match it at just 1600 ISO because of the details in the shadows it was able to pick up. So all the talk about bad low light performance based on ISO is very misleading.

I have been wanting a g2 for a while and am distracted by the ff sale, but I wanted g2 for the ef mount since I have the ef sigma art lenses. Why did you return for g2?

@@Lathrop_Media The FF has some serious noise issues in low light (horizontal banding) that the G2 doesn't. Like Josh says in his comparison video, the G2 is 90 percent of the FF's image and IMO minus some of its problems.

It's not a sale. They never mentioned that word. As a matter of fact, they are very vague as to what this price drop means. They left the wording very open ended so that they could leave it as a permanent price drop or temporarily revert to the previous price, then have it drop back down again OR they could discontinue this camera altogether after stock runs out or make this a just in time camera to reduce risk. If a retailer uses the word "Sale", then they must revert the price back to the previous price after a given time period, but if they don't use that word, then they don't have to and it leaves them more flexibility. Why? Well it's because of competition, whether internal or external. Have you seen the new Panasonic S9 that was launched today? It's a killer camera for the price and size! One thing is for sure though, Blackmagic is willing to flood the market at $1575 USD, this alone makes it difficult to revert back to the old price.

Incorrect. The Blackmagic website uses the phrase "Save 40% Limited Availability" and "Limited Offer" and "Special Price" which are all synonyms with having a sale and not a permanent price drop. All that to say, they very well may keep the pricing or go back up to original for a bit. Not that it matters. Just look at what you can buy the camera for and evaluate if it's the right camera for you and if it's a good value.

Not true at all. They’ve been very open about things like these. When they dropped the price of the 12K to match the ursa g2, they said clearly it would remain at that price point because they found a way to cut a major manufacturing cost. They went the way of transparency at the cost angering a major section that just got the g2. This is very clearly a limited sale with no set date. Which means they will pull the plug before it can “flood”. They are clearly going by the “number of units to be cleared” approach.

Hey there. Nice info! Seems there’s more speculation to be done. How soon will BM fill the gap between the Pyxis and URSA, and with what features and at what price? I’d bet for a new camera in September, in the same body as Pyxis, but with new sensor and tec, at maybe $4,999? What do you think? Will the new URSA compete well against the Burano and new Red offerings?

Blackmagic says the camera is "Made from lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite". This is not carbon fiber. Polycarbonate composite is a thermoplastic fiber composite made by mixing polycarbonate with carbon or glass fibers. It combines strength, stiffness, and low weight with an attractive appearance. Yes it has some carbon fiber mixed in, but this is a thermoplastic and I wouldn't say the camera is made of "carbon fiber". I own things that are made of carbon fiber and the Blackmagic cameras don't feel like that. They feel like plastic.

Good niche cameras. I suppose if I was shooting a short film with no handheld in good light I might use one. But the other 99% of the time I'm more inclined to grab one of my Sony's.

So I picked up the FF and I'm considering sending it back for the G2. Last night I picked up the camera to record my kids in a somewhat dark room that was lit with just a lamp. I saw in the monitor so weird issues that look like banding. Not the banding you get from shutter/lights timing... I was able to recreate it but today I have not been able to. Not sure if the sensor is glitch but I did a quick search and found many are having this issue with the FF.

This is not unique to the 6K FF and I have seen it in other cameras too. But yes, this does appear when underexposing an image with the 6K FF.

Oh so you haven't even graded it yet? Try to get as much light to your sensor with opening the aperture and adding some light. Sensors can only capture what they are given. So if the image is underexposed by several stops, you will see this banding. A moody scene still needs to be properly exposed.

Does the Pyxis have the same sensor and specs? Because a full frame sensor box camera is fun, but not if the lowlight, rolling shutter, codec options and frame rate options suck.

? There is a hot shoe accessory with 2 xlr input. The S series all have a mini jack mic input. That's a mic for run and gun and a full solution for when you need it stationary with more complex audio. If you need more than that then maybe you should buy a dedicated audio interface, not going through a camera

@@AdamOuellette-ek5vl I disagree, anyone doing audio seriously will prefer a zoom/tascam. A one man band shooter shooting low budget jobs will be fine with a wireless DJI/Rode mic, while a higher end one will take a FX6/C200 that have all the inputs/outputs for the job.

If only BM would have chosen a better and more modern sensor on this series of cameras (6k and Pyxis) would have been really a great option, but with a such a slow readout paired with a terrible second iso (tried yourself, even comparing with the old super 35 pocket 6K) limit too much the potential of those cameras to be appealing in 2024. Only reason to consider would be the super low price with the discount, otherwise if budget is a big factor of choice better to go for the second hand older pocket 6k (OG or the Pro G2) that have even better specs for the price. IMO PS. Quite rare to find but if can find a good deal I think is also worth to mention the Ursa Broadcast G2 (Ursa design with the pocket super 35 sensor and NDs).

You can edit with braw in any NLE if you install Braw player, I edited entire feature film in Premiere on Braw.

Sorry, I should have said you can't edit BRAW natively in Final Cut Pro. I don't have much experience with Premiere, but I was discussing my experience in Final Cut Pro and Resolve. You can not edit BRAW natively in Final Cut Pro. You can use something like BRAW Toolbox, which I purchased and tried, but it is not as good as editing it directly in Resolve. Maybe a temporary price drop to boost sales and then instead of going back to MSRP they keep it at $1,999 which I think would fit better into their lineup, considering the Pyxis is at $2.999.

FX30 will be a lot easier to capture the image due to AF, IBIS, form factor, battery life, etc. but the image quality and flexibility in post will be better with the Blackmagic.

I bought mine just 3 weeks ago, and yeah this price drop stings. Doesn't matter though, still got a great camera. As for the proce drop, after speaking to the seller I bought mine from, we think the reasons why are simply the arrival of the Pyxis, and the fact that there wasn't really much demand for the 6KFF. The 6K Pro, which has been on the market for 3 years now, hasn't seen a price cut since its release, yet the 6KFF has after only coming out less than a year ago.

Yeah its a healthy way to look at it. It’s like some guys just won a mini lottery. The price you paid is still a steal for what it offers. Add an extra $1000 in the amount to be made to cover the cost of the camera and the sting is gone 😊

I actually have the pocket pro. the reason why I didn't change to Pocket FF or Pyxies is that they dont have ND Filters. They improve one thing and destroy another, this is Blackmagic, it is a never ending story with them 😀

With the S5IIx on one end the Pyxsis on the other end this camera has no place and I agree that Blackmagic will discontinue this camera. Make an S52 type camera with great Ibis and AF but with the advantage of BM great menu system and BRAW.

The problem I am having with buying this cam is that everything fells half baked with this cam, if only it would have 50 fps in proper 16:9 i would buy it but BM deciding to limit it at 48fps makes it kinda shit for europe since we have 50 Hz meaning 48 fps will flicker in artificial light. Even though I am tempted because of the FF I will pass and keep working with the OG 6k until they either up the fps to 50 via firmware or provide a better camera with proper specs later on.

I have only tested the one that I had earlier and it was there. I have heard of other people mentioning this so it's probably on every camera. I just ordered mine this morning 😎 With this kind of discount, ya can't beat it. I agree with you that Blackmagic was probably having a stock issue and wants to offload as many of these cameras before the Pyxis releases. I have absolutely zero interest in the Pyxis due to the placement of the screen, it really feels like a 2 person camera not a solo operator sort of thing. But I already own two box style cameras, so this "chunky" mirrorless form factor, with the great tilting screen, internal BRaw and only a few additional accessories like the EVF and battery grip give me a nice, simple, not complex cinema setup when I wanna go lighter and don't want to deal with bigger rigs but still want great recording capabilities and internal raw.

Yea I do like the Pyxis… but I don’t care too much about form factor. Plus, these pockets actually feel really nice when you add a smallrig or tilta cage to them. Add cage, rails, vmount battery… and the form factor is kind of a box anyways.

@@Frontigenics I already own a few box style cinema cameras as well as small mirrorless cameras, so this form factor is a happy balance in the middle for me. Gives me the flexibility of shooting raw when I don't feel like dealing with bigger rigs.

I really regret buying this camera even though I got the free EVF with it simply because they knew in a few months the PYXIS was coming out and then they have the nerve to drop the price on the BMCC FF. I did preorder the PYXIS but I canceled the order right after hearing the $1000 price drop so I’ll be waiting for that PYXIS Pro.

to get the cash buy the all new materials for the pyxis, 17k and 65mm ursa. Everyone is so sure that the pocket and pyxis will make the same image, if you used the 4.6 g2 ursa which probably used the same sensor as the 6k pro you would know that is not the truth, subtle differences in the most important parts of the image, I expect the same thing here. I would imagine sales for this camera and really every BMD camera that you can buy right now came to a halt after the NAB announcements and they probably need to pay their suppliers for the massive amount of sensors and zillion other electronics that go into new cameras. The fact that it goes to may 31st also means that bmd will ship a good amount of cameras in the beginning of June

I am debating a G2 with my current sigma art lenses, or FF with adapter in S35 mode until i feel like forking over some money for an L mount full frame lens. Do you have any thoughts on that idea?

@@Lathrop_Media honestly, not sure, I grabbed the G2 because I hate dealing with adapters and did not want to buy into a new lens system if I didn’t have to. I’ve been a Canon shooter (Canon cinema line) and only own Canon EF glass. I have an EF-M camera (Canon M-6) and though adapting my lenses to that camera was fine, I didn’t want to have to adapt them to a new cinema camera. If you have no problem adapting your current lenses and see yourself buying into L mount lenses in the future, I’d get the 6K FF. I had no real need for FF so I stuck with the super 35 format as it hasn’t done me wrong in the past.

Mine arrived today and I immediately returned for a replacement due to insane horizontal noise / banding straight out of the box! Has anyone else had this? Is it quality control? I've used 6k and 6k pro and never noticed it like on this cam, maybe a bad batch. Please let me know

I think you're right - the upcoming Pyxsis killed this camera. Also - probably the best BRAW camera you can buy for the money is the Lumix s5iiX with the BMVA 5 inch monitor. I switched to this setup from the BMPCC 4ks I had... you end up with BRAW that's infinitely colour-gradable with IBIS and AF - it's kind of the best Blackmagic codec machine you can buy!

I was thinking of this for a while. have the s5iix and GH6 which both support VA but jsut got this BMC6k. still debating what to do since people also complain that the VA rigged onto the s5ii is cumbersome.

@@ThatGuyOverThereWeird yeah it only really works if you rig it out to a Pyxis style footprint - I have it on a low profile baseplate with short rails and a mini v-lock tight to the back (camera monitor flipped out to the side). The v-lock balances the whole thing into a cube / box camera type unit, but most importantly powers the monitor without cumbersome NPF 970 batteries hanging off the back of it. Without batteries on the monitor you can discreetly place the SSD on the back of it instead. It all ends up being really well balanced whilst maintaing a small footprint. Add a comfortable wide padded strap and the whole thing sits perfectly horizontal on your chest / tummy with no hands needed. Not doing this and just putting that heavy monitor and NPF batteries on top makes it an ergonomic nightmare.

I have the s5iix and bmpcc 6k, but no the braw frome the s5iix +bmva monitor does not equal blackmagic color science…s5iix could be better option of shoot run and gun video (like wedding, documentary), but in an environment where we control everything, the science of color and feeling of blackmagic will take over

@@irgendwasmitcomputer yeah the amount of hdmi lag is deplorable tbf. For the work I do, fast focus pulls are never needed.. high latency is far more forgiving when pulling slowly. I have never used AF when filming before I got this camera but so far I am impressed - obviously using AF solves one of the biggest drawbacks of high latency. Also I must say the EVF on this camera is pretty amazing too - you need to fit a proper large soft eyecup to it but it really works then, even in harsh sunlight when outside. When I'm filming in places I am not allowed to I just use the camera with a half cage and a small SD... I lose BRAW obviously but the ProRes is a pretty good consolation for those scenarios. No camera is perfect but the s5ii has alot going for it, especially handheld... it reminds me alot of the canon 5d ii when it came out - all the buttons are exactly in the right place and you don't have to lift your eye from the evf to change anything. Black Magic UI on their LCDs is the best, but the Lumix EVF experience is really great too

Not sure if I’ll get any response on this… but I’m very new to video. And I read all these concerns about noise in the image quality being a concern. And I get it. I really do. But…. I just recently watched a 4K to original 35mm video on Star Wars. And the impact the noise did to help sell the realism of everything plus make everything look more cinematic. And I watched War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise, and couldn’t help but notice all the noise throughout the movie…. So…… What’s the deal? Is noise THAT bug if a concern when even these huge movies have noise in their images?

yesterday i tried pyxis at cabsat convention in dubai, pyxis has crazy amount of rolling shutter i don think its usable in real world, i havent use this camera too but rolling shutter 2024 is meh.

I jumped on this deal too and thinking about selling my 4K for it. I got it and now I’m a little worried about the noise I’m seeing. Not in daylight but more so in the dark. When the extended video LUT is on it’s a lot less noticeable. If I send you some stills could you confirm if what I’m seeing is normal or not? Or would Blackmagic do that for me if I contact them? I just don’t want to be stuck with it if it’s not normal. I took my 4K, 6K, and 6K ff with caps on and maxed out the ISO and on FF there is so much more! Especially chroma noise. But maybe that’s not a good way to test anything. Just freaking me out a little! Thanks for the video!

I don't think this camera was a mistake. I think it was a marketing opportunity to lure those Leica mount folks to it's world and to do it cheaply by offering an existing body, a sensor that could be bought cheaply in mass and low use of R&D cash to bring it to market. As far as price the Pocket 6K G2 has been $400 off as a limited time sale for over a year now. So that buy it quick its on sale scam isn't new to Blackmagic. So I think this $1000 off sale is permeant even if they never announce it as permeant.

There’s nothing wrong with the image from the camera. The trouble with that camera is the auto focus is dog crap it might as well have no auto focus and in this age that isn’t gonna fly at any price, you can’t stick it on a gimbal because you’ve got a focus the thing constantly, Black Magic needs to step up and get proper auto focus happening on the cameras or there’s just going to be left behind in the dust kind of person that’s going to buy an expensive camera is not going to be the guy who’s going to pay to have a puller while he shoots

I tell you why. Pyxis canibalize BMCC6K. Also BMCC6K afer 1000 bucks off is right price actually. Panasonic S5mk2 has the same capibilities as BMPCC6K but it has pretty awesome autofocus, it`s much smaller and takes great photos. Long story short, if you want cheap cinema camera, you will buy old BMPCC 6K Pro or new Pyxis 6K. If you want cinema camera but also you want stills or AF, you will choose S5mk2. I am telling you this as BMPCC 6K Pro and C70 owner. I have no reason to upgrade BMD camera... more than that I wait for new Canon cinema camera.

I have the OG Pocket 6k since it was released and got a S5ii to be the travel camera. It doesn’t even come close to the Pocket. The image quality in video is so bad for the Lumix compared to the Pocket.

They love people like you who paid full price so they can invest in technology for future variations then they gotta get rid of old stock to boost sales so they can invest in building newer models to boost the price on the newer models. It obvious that these probably only cost $400 to build in China
