Quick and rubbishy video showing a nice big US Metal Halide lamp. Meh! Skip to 02:05 to see it fire up.

Really nice. I'm going to miss those lamps.

That’s a proper lightbulb

I have a 1500w version also!

@@TheCORC964 I might have to do a video on that one as I don't have the right control gear for it. To get it going right, it needs a bit of variac-ing with that big 2kw gearbox that I shonked together a while ago.

@@FrontSideBus might as well. Try not to bust it tho lol

@@TheCORC964 Heh well you have to watch it, that very thin flywire that goes to the other end of the arc tube glows red hot if you are not careful! They are really supposed to be ran on CWA ballasts instead of chokes.

very nice! I just bought metalarc 400w usa made lamp

I have one of those too. Could make a video if anybody thinks it's interesting lol.

@@FrontSideBus I would love to watch also can I run that bulb on european mbf gear?
@FrontSideBus9 ай бұрын
@@Altamira-Arazz Yeah the 400w metalarc runs at 3.2a which is the same as 400w MBF.

Hey, you might have an answer for me. Can you run a mercury-vapor lamp on an equivalent-wattage probe-start metal-halide ballast? I tried it out recently with a 400w ballast and lamp and it seemed just fine, but will this cause any issues in the long-term?
@FrontSideBus9 ай бұрын
I'm no expert on US ANSI lamps but as long as the lamp current in the datasheets are the same you should be good. It even gets confusing in Europe since most 400w halide lamps are designed to run on 400w mercury ballasts (3.2a) with 750v soft ignitors, but then you also have 400w halides that are designed to run on 400w SON gear (4.6a) with 4-5kv "hard" ignitors. It's quite often to see lamps running on the wrong gear in the wild heh!

In the US, yes, you can run an equivalent wattage mercury vapor lamp on a probe-start metal halide ballast. Most metal halide ballasts will say on ballast label they will also run the equivalent wattage mercury vapor lamp. However, you cannot run a probe-start metal halide lamp on a mercury vapor lamp ballast.

@@djm5kIf you use a European 750V-1000V 2 wire parallel ignitor like a Philips SI51 ignitor, you can get same wattage probe start metal halide lamps to run more reliably on mercury vapor ballasts although the ignitor pulses might damage the insulation of the mercury vapor ballast over time if this setup is used for long periods of time. I have had some good experiences with running 175W M57 probe start metal halide lamps on North American 175W H39 mercury vapor yardblaster fixtures using that method.
