Some people compare metal detecting to fishing. Both are similar in that you are hoping for a "bite" and then you try to bring a big one up to the surface! Once you find a hot spot in fishing you can keep going back to that area for years and years, catching more and more fish as they spawn. That's not the case for metal detecting though, as once you pull things from the ground they're not getting replenished and the spot runs dry quickly and you have to move on, often forever. This is the scenario we deal with everywhere we go, we hunt it hard for a little while but then have to move on, never to return. But there are often exceptions to the rules and this place is at the top of the exception list, our Field of 1000 Holes!
This place is just magical where every year we hunt it hard and pull out hundreds and hundreds of items. Then at the end of the season when the farmer prepares for a planting, he does a rare deep plow, turning over the top 16" of soil which makes this place like new again. Now the deep plow doesn't necessarily mean that he's bringing things up from the depths, although that does happen, but even just slightly adjusting the way items are laying throughout the field can make all the difference for our detectors to lock on to these targets better.
Now because this field has such thin sandy soil it doesn't freeze easily, so we typically try to save coming here for the coldest and most frozen days of winter, when all our other farm fields are frozen solid. But once each season opens we try to do a "test run" just to make sure this place is going to be productive for yet another season, and so far it has never let us down! So let's fire up the machines, our pockets ready to be filled, and start the 2023 Metal Detecting season at our Field of One Thousand Holes!
