My main "why" is that I rather break my back for my own dreams than the dreams of others.

You are so much like my daughter. She just graduated with Ag. Business degree, is working two part time ag jobs and has leased 30 acres (15 grass). We have about finished all the perimeter fence. She has 4 heifers and 2 steers so far and we just went and walked 5 more acres close to our homestead we may put calves on. What an adventure! subscribed! Small homestead here, just a hobby farm really. My wife is amazing and creates soaps, cheeses, tinctures, and body scrubs. I'm trying to get more organized with how to be more sustainable. I have been in a "building infrastructure" stage since we moved here 2 years ago! I definitely need to do more planning. We really have been a support the family first and bless our community with the abundance.

Aside from raising kids starting an aqua farm has been a huge part of my walk with Christ. Some days need to be humble, other days having hope when there isn't any, then learning to trust when i see Him making moves around me to accomplish my dreams for a future. It's a wild ride

There is also diversification of income when you reapproach this from thinking of running a farm to running a company. There are things not directly related to farming itself but can generate income such as KZfaq, courses, on-site experience trips for groups, etc.

Yep ! the first thing you learn is not to lie to yourself. I got 5 acres and am retired now. I loved growing different berries.. I planted about 500 caroline rasberries. They was nice and I picked my first berries. I said man every body is going to want some of these... I stared a you pick and guess what happened. Yea every one did want some but not many wanted them enough to pick them... In the end it was upick for free and still not many folks wanted to get off there butt even for free berries.

7 years... Guys and Gals, farming is a 100 plus year plan. I'm never going to see my goals, my grandkids will. I am totally OK with it! You're never going to be cash rich farming, but you will build considerable wealth on paper. We're a medium sized agriculture enterprise, so the numbers being thrown around are a lot bigger, but 30% margins? Growth / investment will bring that actual net net net number down to near zero if you're building something generational. I like to say I have the two best part time jobs in the world. Farming and aviation. I have always done both until recently. For me, their are two key factors to success. 1.) PEOPLE! For direct to consumer, you're in the hospitality industry! The connection is everything. The same goes for commercial organic feed stock customers. You're not dumping commodities on an open market. You're dealing with people. 2.) PROCESS! Having systems and enterprises that get things done efficiently without sacrificing quality, and that compliment each other.

I´ve just bought a 13 acre farm by the sea on the east coast of sweden, should get the deal done this year maybe by august/ september, pretty exciting, I was thinking of sheep then I saw your sheep vs cows video and it got me hooked! This is really helpful stuff for a newbie!

This is an awesome video, truly inspiring, and so helpful. I'm lucky and blessed enough to be starting on the bones of my parents' farming venture, more reorganizing and revitalizing, especially from the business angle, rather than starting out fresh on all fronts. Added a mini flock of wool sheep to our existing small freezer beef herd this summer, improving the green gold underfoot and diversifying income streams along with our biology and ecology!! Love it!!

Yes, I’m that weirdo.... as I answered the common business start up questions I keyed on the fact that question 1 is in first person and others such as question 7 are in third person. YOu’ve done such a nice job outlining and presenting the information, simply uniforming the language (I recommend sticking with first person) will add another professional element.. best wishes to you.

A few years ago I was out in North Dakota hunting on the farm of a friend of mine. He farms several thousand acres. The lottery had gotten up to almost 1 billion dollars. A lady asked him what would he do if he won the lottery. The old farmer thought for a minute then said, “Well, I guess I’d just keep farming until it was all gone.” 😂

We are staring our East Texas farm next month! But that farm is for US, hopefully at some point we can profit, but we first want to just learn and enjoy that simple life and have ministry on our land to bring the Lord’s hand to people in tangible ways in their body, mind, and marriages/family. But when we get to that point, your worksheet wouldn’t hurt :)

Thank you for your comment on the profits and what you actually being in..🙏😁 being a small trucking company CEO... it's been HARD to get it through my husband's mind that what the Truck he works every day of the year... brings in is WAY different than what he actually brings home... so that $190K the truck made he brought home about $45K... when you own the business, you pay all the expenses... lol 😆 what ever it takes to maintain, run, fuel, tires, road taxes, over weight/height/length fees... lol so blessings and just keep doing what you love!! I know we love what we do and are always looking for other ways to earn an income!

30k is now minimum wage in most states. Being a farmer is a calling. Working with the animals must be near the top of the list and providing a great quality product that your customers want is a must.
