Full coverage of the semi-finals in the women's 100m hurdles event as Australia's Sally Pearson and the USA's Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells all advance to the final at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

The Olympic Committee should seriously rethink pulling someone out for a false start after 4 years of training. That's a hefty chunk of one's life. They are obviously anxious and want to get it on and over with. Methinks there should be, at least, one general first warning rule.
@cheapPixel
@cheapPixel 5 жыл бұрын
I think they previously had a two warning rule? I was watching some documentary on a guy who got two false starts and was disqualified on the second. He was given a warning on the first. This was in the 80s or 90s, I believe.

Hi, I'm seeing a lot of comments about the false start and posted this comment of the video, but I thought I'd paste it here in case you're interested (: To clear things up, the technology they use in these competitions can tell if the athlete starts before the gun. It's not up to debate. Unfortunately at this level of competition, it's truly a mind game as much as a physical feat. To be good in the Olympics, you can't just be super fast, etc., you also have to "play the game", or cater to the format. Same with exams, which are a good comparison. To do great on exams, you can't just be super smart, you also have to be good at the exam format (dealing with stress, time management during the test, strategy for recording answers, etc.). Athletes at this level prepare for this stuff. They know the consequences of a false start. As much as it pains me to see their anguish when this happens, I understand that it must be this way. Imagine if false starts were met with second chances. Athletes wouldn't worry as much about making the mistake and many more people would start falsely, not because they're cheaters, but simply because they're so nervous to start right at the gun, just like this athlete was. This would mean all the other athletes would also be halted. This is not fair to the other athletes because they go thorough the mental stress and physical strain of a race start only to be stopped short and made to do it again. Now imagine this happened multiple times because of multiple people. That's why there can be no second chances. And here's a related trivia point. Each of the athletes are fed the sound of the gun through their own separate speaker behind them. This happens in all these extremely close races where every millisecond matters, like sprinting, hurdles, swimming, etc. The reason for this is that if a single speaker emits the sound, each athlete will hear it at a different time due to the time takes to reach each of them at different distances from the source. Meaning that the athlete furthest away is at a disadvantage. This used to be the case when a real gun was used, for example.

I used to run 600m for school atletic competitions and I was terrified moments before the start. Sometimes I froze for a moment when I heard the starting sound instead of starting to run. It's sooo nerve-racking. I think they judges or whoever should have understood that and should have given her a second chance. :/

It makes me so emotional when I see people winning the Olympics. Like they worked so hard to even be qualified to go to the Olympics and the fact that they want it like it’s their dream you know and I just get super emotional because it’s them achieving the dream that they work so hard for these past years or maybe all their life

I run track I feel nervous for them honestly those moment before you set of there the scariest they go on for what feels like hours that's why people sometimes do false starts I'm so excited I'm learning hurdles technique soon for track season I'm so excited everyone says I'll be good at it Edit: i've trained them and i'm competing tommorow. Edit: i've competed it went ok. 😊

Took me out my last year. Haven't run since 2007 but I'm training my kiddo, not for anything other than fun though. Well wishes.

she didn't start early tho. Start at 3:30 and pause at 3:32 they triggered the gun and she left.
@DarkPh0enix25
@DarkPh0enix25 7 жыл бұрын
well it was an early start because regardless if the gun went off or not doesn't matter what matters is how fast she left from the platform after the gun went off since humans can only physically register something so fast and if they leave before there body tells them what they heard then that is indicative of an early start.

For everyone saying Okori started early and everyone else started late, the gun didn't trigger yet when she ran. That sound when she ran was the buzzer, telling there was a false start.

i still watch these on the daily and it frustrates me that a lot of you don't understand what happened. that buzzing noise was NOT the signal for the race to start, it was a signal that someone false started. those were not fast reflexes, she was WAAAYY ahead. she anticipated the shot too much. the shortest time possible for a human relfex is barely 0.1 seconds and what she did wasnt that, she literally jumped the gun xoxo, track athlete
