I wanted to play this as a background music while I do my work, and then I find myself watching him playing... forgetting about my work.. 🙃

It's as if Beethoven no longer suffers from deafness.......how joyous his spirit has become.

I am sure Beethoven may want this kind of performance. Yunchan showed us what Beethoven should be!

I say it again. He becomes Ludwig when he plays Beethoven. He becomes Wolfgang when he plays Mozart. He becomes Frederic when he plays Chopin. And he becomes Franz when he plays Liszt.

I see he is getting better every day. His playing here is better than the competition.

He has done it again. Brought me to tears listening to Beethoven for the first time after hearing it a hundred times.

Yunchan Lim is really amazing. Almost every piece he plays becomes one of the greatest performances in history. His performance of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes was one of the best renditions that can be compared to Lazar Berman's famous recording of 1958. When he played Rachmaninov's third Piano Concerto at the Van Cliburn Pino Competition it immediately became one of the greatest performances in history. Now the same is true of this concerto of Beethoven. Before I heard this performance by Yunchan Lim, the best rendition for me was the recording by Arturo Beneditti Michelangeli with Wiener Symphoniker under Carlo Maria Giulini in 1987 and that never chaged for decades. However, the moment I heard this performance by Yunchan Lim a few days ago, my favorite changed at once. I have never heard this concerto so full of life. When I first heard this performance, I thought it was a studio-edited recording because it was literally flawless and the ensemble with the orchestra was so perfect. And when I realized it was a live recording, my surprise doubled!

He is a great Alckemist of Beethoven’s musical aesthetics . Because his wonderful performance generates emotions and comfort

Why am I crying… this is phenomenal! I would love for Yunchan to come and play with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Netherlands under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä! 😘

Yunchan is in a class all by himself. After listening to past and present masters, I have determined NO ONE comes even close to Yunchan's performance. FYR, I will say Zimerman reached only about 85 percent to match Yunchan's musicality and even less for Horowitz, though Gould came closer at 90% as well as Cho. It's like Yunchan has discovered the Grand Unified Theory in Classical music and all past theories have become obsolete!

CD doesn't do Yunchan's playing a justice. What we need is a Bluray to see and feel the essence of pure magical music making. I wish for the Bluray version of this concert soon.

What a pity I dont understand any of the comments which are all in Korean, but judging from the countless thumbs up (and no thumbs down) I get the feeling that all are of the view that Yunchan's performance (and interpretation) is exhilarating, artistic, original and above all deeply touches our souls. It moves you to joyful tears and all my goose bumps are up. It is beyond belief that there is such a young pianist who first out shone all others during the 2022 Cliburn competition and who has such a deep mature understanding of the composer's feeling and emotion. I am proud for you, South Korea, I am proud of you, Yunchan.

Proud Native Son. That was a special performance. Yunchan makes every orchestra sound incredible. He brings them to life with such electricity...they become him and he becomes them. I've never seen anything like it. He is a gift from Heaven.

If there ever was a PERFECT PERFORMANCE of this Beethoven Concerto I believe it would be this one. I don't believe that Beethoven himself could have played it any better. An incredible TALENT. God truly Blessed this young man. The BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD!

We went to Milan to see Yunchan which he unfortunately cancelled, and was replaced by a great Italian pianist who played this concerto. Now I have a good understanding of what the difference is between a good and genius pianist. During the Milan concert all I could think about was technique and delivery, but in Yunchan’s performance I felt the music course through my body and touch my soul. I wish one day I can hear him playing this live!

Breathtaking performance- I have always loved the Kempff version of the Emperor from the 1950s, but this has become my favourite. Sensational talent.

The music sounds effortless, as if it's just there in the air and the pianist is simply drawing it out so it can be heard...and I feel as if I'm hearing this music for the first time in my life!

I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video -- compared it to other's of the same concerto and have to say -- this grandma loves Yunchan's touch, pace and sensitivity on the piano. Yes, I do listen to others but, Yunchan never disappoints. All the hype about this winner is warranted. He really is a wonder.

수백번 들어봤던 5번. 그래서 이젠 식상해지기도 했던 5번. 하지만 임윤찬이 18세의 나이에 5번은 조금 이른 시도가 아닐까 했던 기우는 순식간에 사라져 버렸다. . 모골이 송연하고 등골이 서늘해졌다. 그 찬란하고 영롱한 연주는 물론이고 선명한 타건의 연속이 경탄을 금치 못하게 한다. 단순히 타건의 영롱함, 선명함을 넘어서는 웅장한 울림은 또 어쩌란 말인가? 리듬과 생략의 해석을 마음껏 발휘하며 일궈내는 그의 베토벤 5번은 소름 돋는 연주였다. 부라보, 부라보, 부라보..........................오오 !

It is truly an amazing and moving experience to watch and listen to this young artist play the piano. His comprehension of the arc of the music and how to bring the composer's music to life is so far beyond his years of age. We are so fortunate that he has come into our world at this time and brings the healing power and inspirational joy of music to us. His clarity, articulation, subtleties of expression, remarkable sense of timing, intelligent use of rubato, and ability to project so many emotions all contribute to his power of making music in such a rare and precious fashion. His playing can easily move one to tears. I can only imagine how he will grow and mature even more, as he is already one of the greatest pianists to ever be recorded. No wonder the Cliburn jury was swept off their feet by this young master's understanding, skill, and talent. His teacher, according to Yunchan, has had a profound influence on his piano playing and his life. Congratulations to student and teacher! BRAVO Yunchan!

This whole performance (on the videos from DGG and this live one) is a commanding performance throughout. I keep coming back to it. I am sure it is the best I have ever heard the work performed and I have decided to bow out of commenting now. I'll just listen and enjoy Yunchan. My final comment re Yunchan is that I now firmly believe that with good fortune, health and not too much aggravation or interference in his own schema for his musical future Yunchan Lim may well become this century's greatest classical pianist, bar none. I wish him well.💟💟💟 It is now some months' later, and I must add a footnote here. Do listen to his Tokyo recording of this work (on KZfaq) if you are reading this and interested. Yunchan keeps on reinventing the wheel. This wonderful performance is surpassed by the Tokyo performance, now the definitive Emperor for me.

Sublime…difficult to put into words how moving this rendition is to me…Beethoven symphony No 5 (Rondo) is a wonder, then you have beautifully it played by this wonderful young pianist and you really wonder if you are on earth or somewhere else. Yes!! Absolutely nailed it. I thought the Beethoven 3rd in the Cliburn was great too, but this one is right up Yunchan's alley. By far the best version of this Rondo I've ever heard from any pianist. Thank you Yunchan, Beethoven would have loved your performance here. As usual you took the orchestra with you and the conductor, they were totally on side. You can find the full DGG recording of this concerto performance on You tube as well. The whole work is befittingly imperious and totally stunning. You have such an incredible diversity of touch and almost metronomic timing that it is hard to comprehend Yunchan. Where will you take us in the future? Please keep exploring the classical repertoire. Wonderful, thanks.
