I had an exact same ranger that I bought new in November 1989. It had a 2.9 6 cylinder 4X4 long bed blue. Came from factory with high rider series. I no longer own my truck. I do know they make a kit for installation of a 5.0 302. Years ago I saw a guy that had a 302 in his Ranger. Good truck!

Great fun to watch. The admission that "sometimes it's better to just pay someone" to get work done - encouraging! The production qualities are also improving - good audio makes for a good video! I enjoyed the voiceover work (mixed well with the other audio) and the inclusion of the dog barking audio! Great stuff Jake - thanks for your hard work to share this with us.

My first vehicle was a black '92 Ranger SuperCab 4x4 with the 4.0L and 5-speed. That truck got me through college and a couple years after before I traded it on a 2000 Ranger. Loved that truck and would kill to find another one but they're getting scarce...

That shift actuator looks an awful lot like the power window motors Ford used from the 60s - 80s. Wonder if they didn't just modify one to include a switch so the module knew what position it was in and called it good.

Always good to see a 89 Ranger. I had one from 1994-2000 and sold it when I got my 2000 F150. It was a 2wd 2.3L 5 speed, the motor was a total dog but that was probably a good thing when I was a stupid teen/early 20s driver. I wish I still had it but the 2002 S10 2.2L 5 speed that was my father in law's truck does a pretty good emulation of theblack of power the 2.3L had. Funny thing was in 89 they moved to a 8 plug design with the 2.3 and that bumped it from 88hp in 88 to 105hp iirc. Even with the extra power it still struggled to maintain 55 mph going up the Sidney Sherman Bridge in 4th gear. It wasnt as big a deal in the 90s as it would be now though.

Check for a stretched out throttle cable at the pedal. Zip tie trick will take up the slack and cause the truck to run less rich, increasing hp and fuel mileage. My apologies if you already did this. Worked great for my ‘94.

@@100PercentJake this was a really big problem on rangers back in the day. I ran into a 93 ranger that had that cable so stretched out that it needed 2 zipties to take in all the slack. basically just clamp the throttle full open, press the gas to the floor and look to see how much extra cable is sticking out inside the cab.

Well done, Jake. Nice to see the old Ranger working well. They are neat, that is for sure. The 2.3 litre is no powerhouse, but it does the job well. It dates back to the late 60s in England, so the bugs are well and truly out of it. One thing to consider is changing the differential fluids after going through the river unless you have rerouted and extended the vent tubes. Have fun with that truck. Looks like a winner to me.

I miss my old Ranger. Those 4 cylinders are gutless turds, but they're damn bulletproof. That old truck was still quicker to 60 than my current daily driver, which is both sad and hilarious. Why did VW think 11 seconds was an acceptable 0-60 time for a production vehicle in the 2000s??

Had a good laugh thankyou, a tip point the exhaust tip downwards, you will get fed up cleaning the exhaust soot off your dailt the garage wall the parking lot car next to after getting shouted at as per the pedestrians pink leggings the dog and girlfriends legs and any attire she is wearing trust me this is a learnt lesson and have the bruises to show for it. You need to get the V6 turbo from the Cyclone or from several other models that use this motor, a shame the suspension kit did not include a front levelling spring or the spacer you can get these seperately and will help the offroad handling and devise a disconnect system for the front swaybar as a lot of the time it is needed, find some longer chassis to swaybar links and fit a clevis pin to the top's and then you can disconnect quick and aesily when needed, I am in the UK and have one, so parts are always a problem as most gear has to come over the pond for me, so I get creative with some things, like converted the four wheel shift to a cable and lever mechanism as with all the mud that gets in they don't last long.

You call yourself a hack when you are really just budget conscious. Here's a hack for you. So many power steering pumps are growling because hoses leak and pumps are not checked often and things take a beating. If you have replaced the bad hose but can't do the pump at this time, pour a half ounce of Lucas oil into the power steering pump and make sure you add enough power steering fluid to reach the full mark. This will quiet things right down. Does it extend the life of the pump? That I do not know but your growling pump seemed to work just fine so you might consider this hack.
